When you start, you're also still in need of filling that time with 'practice'. It'll help you get a rithm on the job. Atleast if you don't have another customer booked after it, it a good way to spend your time. The more hours you get in the job, the better and faster you'll get. So don't worry about the extra's in your first few years, it will help you in the long run 😉 Do mind though to always inform your customers why you're doing the extra's, so they won't get dissapointed as soon as you're getting more bookings in 😅

I polish my own cars, I have all the tools and coatings including ceramic, still it might not be a professional job, but I manage to take away about 95% of imperfections on the paint and make it shine and reflect light like a mirror. When the customer asks for a 1 step, I often look at the "character lines" of the car. Overall doing a 1 step and when the bonnet and/or shoulders actually are heavily scratched up, I'd call the customer for just those areas. Most of the time they'll agree. It takes you an extra 15/20mins and customer is not paying for a full body correction. For many customers it's still affordable and it's a very obvious difference. 😉

This is often what I would do basically. 2 step in the rough areas or areas that catch the light the most. 1 step everywhere else. Happy medium and doesn't break the bank.

Idk maybe he was going in the smaller polisher later 🤷. Giving benefit of the doubt. Even on a 1-step, that's what I do, or "did" when I was still doing this professionally. I keep 3 polishers on-hand, 3 sizes, for 3 area ranges. I would usually go quickly around the car once with the biggest size long throw machine and mow down all the flat-ish panels. Then come back around with one or both of the other machines where necessary to hit the tight areas.

I tell people this exactly. A one step will get it looking nice depending on condition and remove a lot of fine scratches and swirls. If you want to see a perfect reflection it’s going to cost more and that will always depend on condition.

You got a solid point, but my take would be to strictly put every dollar of effort onto the scratches that’s an eye sore for example by the door handle vs putting more effort into the side of the door which goes unnoticed when opening the door. You put $60 dollars of effort into the handle area, and put $10 dollars of effort into the rest of the door. In the end you just paid for the main reason you went (which was probably just those stubborn door handles) and everyone leaves happy. Car guys looking for perfection should pay the full bill. Not so much regular traffic otherwise asked for.

This is so timely to me because I work at a Harley dealership and yesterday a regular there asked me to polish his corvette. I agreed to do it for 350 but when I was done I wasn’t happy with the result because it didn’t look brand new and tried to offer a $100 discount. He refused and paid full price because he was happy with the result. I’m thankful I had a customer who saw the work I put in and wanted to compensate because for it. I have to really force myself to remember that 20 year old paint on a 60 year old car is never going to look perfect without many hours of work. Also it turns out motorcycles and cars are totally different animals when it comes to detailing. Who knew lol

Customers for the most part don't understand all this fancy terminology or processes. They are just like "make my car look good please, nice and shiny, and like a mirror". It's the job of the detailer to analyze the paint condition and how much clear is left to work with. Then provide a professional yet simple to understand presentation to the client. I used to own a full service car wash and people generally wanted us to lick the cup holders clean for a 10.99 regular wash. People are ALWAYS trying to get more for LESS. It's just the nature of people and business.

Cars in the shop 4-5 days easily and it costs an arm and 3 legs to get it done...... Im not saying its not worth it as the cars look truly amazing but to me its not something for your daily driver ot even a weekend speial ... Thats for a classic car trailered to and from a car show ..... Do that to a faily driver thats patked in a works car park or the local supermarket and id guess within 4 months its going to have scratches and a ding or two in it ..... Ive seen some of these guys show pictures after a single machine polish and the transformation is truly amazing and would suit at least 90% of the public

I've been detailing for 20 plus years, and I tell people not to take the cars for the local scratch and shine and some people get their panties up in a bunch claiming that car washes don't cause scratches. I tell them bring your car by and I'll show you all the cobwebs scratches that are all over it and I say also if I find cobweb scratches are you going to let me correct them and fix them? Them: 🦗🦗🦗🦗

40%? I think you’re undervaluing your work. I bet you easily get 70% with a one step.

You definitely can, it just depends on the condition of the vehicle. I've done some one-steps where it got fantastics results. So just trying to generalize for simplicity sake

One thing I hate about detailers is always wanting to polish a car. You dont have to polish your car every single time you clean it. Youre literally removing some coat which isnt infinite

I prefer to give the best service for 1 price because if I short changed the customer for a cheaper price they get to dog my company when they aren't happy with the work. Clean slate makes lots of money.
