Detailing Tips l Cleaning Wire Wheels l 1969 Jaguar E-Type

We had a 1969 Jaguar E-Type in the shop, and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to explain how we lightly polish some seriously challenging wire wheels. With the right tools and some patience, you can make any wheel really stand out!

Showroom shine is an incredible product. Very little is required and it flashes super quick. Leaves a nice look and doesn’t streak on coated cars.

As an E Type owner, I concur with your statement. Definitely one of the toughest wheels to clean and detail... Great advice and video. Going to try some of the products you mentioned. Gorgeous example as well! Keep up the good work!

Believe it or not, the wire brush attachment on a dremel works amazingly on wire wheels!

he didn't do anything. Cleaning wire spoke wheels requires physical effort, not just talk.

Old school trick is to get a fat shoe lace to get around the back of the spokes if you want to avoid removing the wheels. I cant help but chuckle at the amount of time i wasted polishing the wire wheels on my first car weekly, the wheel part would take me about 1.5-2 hours while washing and detailing the rest of the car took probably 30 minutes.

This type of wheel is a pain to say the least, love the old school shoelace tip as well!

Surely the wheel has to come off before you start this job. What about the back of the wheel and spokes?

You can use skinny brushes like the EZ Detail Mini to reach most of the back areas, however, for a complete clean removing wheels like this is suggested.

Really silly to put the weights on the outside of wheels, mine are always hidden on the inside, they just spoil the look completely.

Unfotunately, you only clean 1/2 of the wheel. You'll need to take the wheel off to fully clean it. Otherwise, you will see the dirt when you lift the bonnet.

I can attest that my real "Knock off type" Dayton Wire Wheels on my Jaguar...are a bitch to clean.

This is not a big deal. I have a 66 roadster. Just get a good wire wheel chrome cleaner, let it soak a bit then use a low pressure power washer. It's just that easy.
