Another day on the fields of Perthshire and a return to the old medieval trackway leading to the 11th century fort.
Best of all the field has been deep ploughed for the first time in five or six years, but will it pull up any new finds?!?

It just occurred to me when you found the Victorian penny that I could see Victoria's face and recognized it for what it was... Since I started watching your videos I've gotten vastly more familiar with your historical currency, so thank you for the interesting and painless education. Before, I only had a vague awareness of some coins I brought back after a visit to England and Scotland in the late 80s. It's kind of ironic too, that if I could find a coin of the same general age as your Victoria penny here in Oklahoma it would be a true oddity, as this part of the US wasn't really "settled" until the late 1870s and older coins are extremely rare. My own oldest is a 1879 Morgan silver dollar, and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven when I found that one.... anyway, thanks much for another good video.

John found a Morgan once but then lost it in the field somehow. I hope he finds it again because our coins of course are rare over there and it was a fun find. I do enjoy watching him detect because they have a long history in Scotland and thus a greater range of finds.

Many thanks for taking the time to comment!! Yes we are certainly blessed with even our ‘modern’ finds and any field could potentially produce a find of hundreds and even thousands of years old 😮 it certainly encourages me to keep going out!!! Glad you’ve been learning about our coinage. I got a Morgan Dollar last year. What a coin!! It was 19th century too and a rare mint mark but I forget which! Happy hunting!!

There's so many little places & little old monk monasteries I've had the pleasure to roam around when slating farm house all around Sutherland, Strathy, Helmsdale & Betty hill. My dad would always get invited bk for wee family holidays by land owners & I've always wanted to go bk to ask if I can detect there land since picking up the metal detecting. Just something that's always stuck in my mind when meeting & seeing the land owners and fields. Farm friends all around Drymen that I will be on this yr & will be documenting.

In Scotland we have lots of old editions of Ecclesiastical Accounts and whilst they often have to be taken with a pinch of salt it’s possible to glean some great info from them. Old roads and boundaries are often very clear in barley or wheat fields, the main crop here. Local knowledge too! Happy hunting

I am amazed how close you rest your detector to the hole you dig. I have to have at least twice that distance or either my pinpointer will go off from my detector, or my detector will sound off. I don’t understand how you can do that. Do you have your Garrett pinpointer very desensitized? Even so, why isn’t your detector sounding off. I have a whites TRX pinpointer and a minlab exquinox 800. Great video as always. I noticed most of your finds looked to be fairly shallow which is really nice as the digger👍

Hi Kevin. I’ve got the pinpointer on it’s lowest setting from being on a heavily mineralised field before Christmas but also when I’m on my knees the microphone is much further away and I’m wearing headphones, it does often beep, but you just won’t hear it! Most of these targets were pretty shallow, but I can assure you as is often the way, the deep iron and tin cans that don’t make the video usually come out at 10 inches plus!! 🤣

So for a haul like this how many trash targets do you come across

Hi John. I think I detected about 2.5hrs and dug about 35-40 targets. Quite easy digging soil in this field and most targets fairly shallow but a very good returns rate!
