Detroit Diesel 2 STROKE 6X6 Truck - WILL IT RUN RIGHT After Sitting For YEARS?

This video features a rare Australian built 6x6 Offroad truck. It features a supercharged 2 stroke Detroit Diesel V series engine, an Allison Automatic transmission and specialised Australian designed and made Permatrack off road Articulation suspension. In this video, I give the Detroit diesel engine a service and show how I’ve modified a cheap sandblaster into an oil vacuum machine to get every last bit of old oil out the sump. This is the first real test run the truck has had after sitting for about 6 years. We go through gullies, paddocks and tracks to see if it will start and run right after a number of years. Thanks again for watching.

I grew up near Rainbow Beach, halfway between Gympie and Goomboorian. What a surprise to see the old garbage truck on youtube! It was always a bit of fun heading to rainbow for a swim and getting stuck behind it on the Tin Can Bay road. you'd be praying for a gap at the few overtaking opportunities or it was a slow drive at best. It was parked up across from the victory pub for a while but disappeared years ago. I'm l'm glad to see it getting the love it deserves and learning more about a truck the was a big part of my childhood. Cheers Bruce

I have a funny story. Over here in the states there’s a heavy equipment/truck auction called Richie brothers. I worked there for a bit and once there was an old dump truck of sorts that was 2 stroke that came through. The muffler had rusted through. Boy you could hear that truck all the way across the yard😂😂

IN Minnesnowta....I worked at a place that had a construction company across the street that had 50 Dump Trucks and Semi-Tractors with side dump'rs....Well in the winter (Maint. Time) they had an old YARD DOG that they would use to move trailers around....When that 4-53T would go screaming across the road to grab a "different" trailer....We KNEW It! - Funniest thing was...When dump truck frames get to be too rusty....They would cut them up....and haul them off in a roll-off!

@QUINTENSMUSICCHANNEL 318cu in. 6V-53T "can" be found in Marine ratings of 400hp though most Land Based Vehicles are 300 or less...There was an 8V53T used in military vehicles that was rated at 400hp Continous Land Ratings- They were specifically used by military BUT I do know of One Speed Boat that had 2x 424cu in 8V53T that were 500+ hp each...BUT those engines required very short overhaul intervals...I have seen 4-53Ts make 300hp in Marine Ratings but 200hp is about all you're going to get from 212cu in. Without having abundance of cooling. IF you run them at Ratings of half a Horsepower per cu in then you have VERY long overhaul intervals (thousands of hours).....vs. 1hp per cu in or more...where They are like Nascar Engines and need overhaul in Hundreds of hours....or less... it IS a trade off.

I ran a truck that had a Detroit at our local steel mill and loved it, that truck was constantly brutalized by hot slag and refused to die even with a hole in the block the size of a baseball……later on after our mechanic had the time to remove the engine I was able to weld it back together using nickel rod and they still use that truck several years later. The truck was a Uclid, thanks for the video and the memories sir.

My uncle was a trucker, actually still is, but he was also my next door neighbor. I remember back in the 80s as a kid hearing that Detroit Diesel from a mile or more away and knowing he was coming home. Riding in that old cab with no air seat was fun as a kid, now as an old guy the thought hurts my back. This Detroit was really the sound of American commerce. Goosebumps. I remember he'd never have the radio on to hear the sound of that engine. Never got tired of it. Still come here to videos like this to hear it. Total nostalgia

That upper exhaust manifold tee flange looks like it was set up for a turbo. That and the intake duct. You may want to scout up a turbo to fit that engine if there is room under the cab because when you put the hammer down it is clearly being over-fueled, as evidenced from the black smoke. Otherwise great show mate!

He also had am original Ford Louiville v8 that he had brand new.. he used to cart spuds and whey to the local pig farm. You could hear him coming from miles away. Although he is now pushing seventy he has is still messing around with the early Atkinson cab overs that he and his son still use today for potato harvesting

I drove a boat that had an 8/71 Detroit and it was great but during a refit I was chasing an exhaust leak and it was hard to shut down, the next time I started it, after putting her on the mooring, I gave it a big rev and she ran away, the emergency shut down cable was gone so I had to jump into the engine room and operate the E stop by hand. I think she was at about 3000 rpm when I got to it and when it was stopped I think I inhaled a whole cigarette in one go. It was definitely a sphincter clenching moment. Ol Blue is a pearl of a truck.
