You wouldnt happen to have any pictures would you? When I was a kid my dad drove for a small outfit owned by a guy that started out back in the late 40s after the war. Real old school bandit. I remember my dad and I in the yard one morning hooking up to this old red steel flat bed with a wooden deck, and my dad sees that its unregistered, owner walks by an dad tells him that its unregistered, the guy picked up a hand full of mud, smeared it around an said your good lol. But he had NICE trucks, an always took real good care of my dad. One of the trucks my dad drove of his for along time was an astro. It was an owner operator spec, white and blue. I think it was the last year of the small grill. Super sharp, but I only have one picture of it and I cant see all of it. It was taken the day the truck was bought and there is a sibling to it next to it but it doesnt have all the nicer featuers that the owner op spec truck had like polished round tanks, longer wheelbase, polished ladder an steps, aluminum wheels, the other one next to it only had datons but has the same paint job.

My first Detroit was a 238, 6cyd, in a 1964 Emeryville. 10spd, with 9th and 10th reversed. The old girl was long legged, but you could toss a football out in front of her, and you'd have to shift three times to get over it. Backed into a dock too hard one time, and it started running in reverse. Smoke scared the hell outta me, 'till a old man came over and told me to just turn it off, and restart it.😁

Screamin D's. You can always tell when they are low on oil, when they are not leaking
@LostInPhilly895 жыл бұрын
It makes me sad when people rip on the Detroits for leaking oil. My father has an early 2000s Peterbilt with a CAT engine. In the last 70K miles that thing has needed to be half-rebuilt at least 3 times due to oil leaks.
@in-rust-we-trust28315 жыл бұрын
Most dont really "leak" 95% of the time its the exhaust sweating because of unburnt fuel going down the exhaust you either gotta hold those engines to the rug or not at all i have a 3-53 in a 1979 timberjack 230 forwarder that "leaked" when we bought it after a week of running it close to full throttle it stopped.

Does anyone know where the name Detroit Diesel came from? It was coined by I-H from where it was made Detroit, Michigan.At one time they were known as G.M. diesel.The 'Big Three' Ford,Dodge, GMC made big rigs along w/ Brockway, Mack, Freightliner, KW, Pete, etc. How would it look having a G.M. diesel in say a competitor's truck like a FORD? This is the reasoning with Allis-Chalmers who competed with G.M. Euclid division. The Buda engine comp. was aquired to di- vest the A-C earth- moving div. from using a competitor power unit.

But with all due respect to my musical heroes, both living, and deceased, their music ALL pales in comparison to the wild, passionate, and uninhibited cry of the TWO - STROKE, GM, DETROIT DIESEL ! The wonderful and marvellously unique and recognizable tones put out by these motors bode back to a sadly bygone era. A far better time to be living in the United States Of America. JIMMY JAMES.

Lovely LoVELY LOVELY! Only thing i get apoplectic over seeing a Glorious MACK BULLDOG, (SUPER LINER at that!) with a screamer AKA Appalachian hummingbird under its hood- never could, never will know why- MACK built all its own parts (Gold/bronze Bulldog on hood indicated this, correct my good guys?) which is/was similar to GMC in its truck heyday) and the BULLDOG diesel WENT ALL THE WAY UP TO 8cyl / 500 HP back then, if i am correct (I dont know too much about rigs, so pls correct this old soul if he's wrong, lol)it just bothers me that While not always the MOST powerful, Mack engines were always the toughest and the longest lasting-there are in fact records that prove this-This I just found out recently- and that made what I always believed inherently a fact of life. So kindred souls- whats the reason- a style thing? (They like the scream instead of the growl?) I just cant figure it out- its like putting 🐴 in a pigs 🐖 pen- to put it all farm like.. lol
