The hesitation with Goff is just due diligence on BH’s part. Goff wants a longer term deal than what the Lions want to give right now. Just wanting to make sure they manage the cap for the future the best they can. We more than likely won’t see a Goff deal until after they see what they have in Hooker in preseason. If Hooker plays lights out in preseason, we may not see a Goff contract for long term. Last I heard Detroit only wanted to renew Goff for 2 years and Goff wanted 4.

@michaelhorstman2603
@michaelhorstman2603 20 күн бұрын
@@derekharp2805 no, I try to ignore shit like that, there’s no point as he’s our QB. While I wasn’t a fan of the trade and know Stafford is the better QB (although older) I didn’t like the trade because I thought Goff was bad. I thought the Rams scapegoated Goff because they really couldn’t get their running game going after their RB went down. Goff is and always has been a playaction pass QB. He plays great football when his RB is a threat and makes the DB’s bite. The reason I didn’t like the deal was because Detroit hadn’t been able to run the ball in a decade, except a lonely year with Bush at the end of his career. Luckily they was able to fix the running game and the trade had worked out.

Love the observations you present. We should trust what the front office is doing. They have the coaches and are drafting the players that fit the scheme, the attitude and culture.

I have a really hard time comparing Rakestraw's to Mitchell 's when the MAC is so different in talent than the SEC. However, I also recall Louis Delmas being clutch in his rookie year.

I think that you will see more of the Lions trading picks to move up in the draft or in player trades. Holmes is getting to the point where there are going to be fewer and fewer draftable players due to the lack of roster holes. With fewer targeted players, keeping the picks would just be a waste, no matter how shrewd Holmes is. This will represent a switch from quantity to quality, in both trades and the draft. Beautifully uncharted territory, Lions fans! #OnePride

The stable of talent and people that have hit the field for the Lions and some of these higher paid players coming through next year as free agents could be a possibility this year or you could work out a trade for four or six rounders at that trade deadline near the end of the year if you’re developing players move up. The beauty of drafting defensive players is often times they are serviceable at their second contract and you don’t have to draft them one through 15 in the draft. Especially if you have a quarterback contract to service. If any holes show in the defense this year, I can expect those to be plugged the next year to help absorb the first year below of the contract Brown and Sewell and Goff. If the corners develop expect re sign Ifatu, and Joseph, while parting with Amik, and the Bucs kid. I am OK with paying these guys right now because the next contracts are likely Jordan love and a couple receivers throughout the division that could create a contractor as Saint Brown may be our guy, but he’s not as flashy as say Jefferson has the sycophantic lovefest of CD lamb. That could push some teams that are reliant on talent versus skiing. Take a step back.

Last year AG and Dan wanted vets. This year the Super Bowl path is Brad's and why he put his stamp on it then stamped it again, bam, bam going 1, 2 Corner then added Vaki and Wingo. All 4 could start at some point. So funny every GM, talking head and fans were (are still :) screaming for an Edge all while Brad cleans out Canada of top talent. The Villain opening up another pipeline for Detroit. Brad is in search of the next AD and why Wingo is a Lion. This isn't your same old Lions, enjoy.

I could be wrong, but isn't Manu's massive height actually a disadvantage? Less able to get leverage, destablized center of gravity, slower footwork in tight spaces, and a little harder for Goff to see down field and pass over? I only saw one short highlight collection on him, only 3 or 4 plays against nothing competition. There was one nice pancake, the rest was just pretty good. hope I'm wrong, but I think we wasted a pick and lost another to get him.

Craig seems to be the only KZfaq commenter that realizes we can't pay everybody. Everybody said give Saint Brown the bag. Give Sewell the bag. Give Jared the bag. Just those three are going to (likely) take up $108 million of a $254 million cap. Nearly half. Good luck giving the "bag" to even one more player, and having the ability to have a 53-man roster. Say bye bye Hutch, Laporta, Gibbs, Williams, Branch, McNeil and the list goes on

The st brown and sewell deals are extensions so some of that money can be moved to this year and next years cap before those extensions even start amd in reality they are only 40 to 45 a year towards the cap without moving money to this year and next and Goff is not getting 65 a year guaranteed
@CarlThomas13
@CarlThomas13 21 күн бұрын
@@matthewholmes9570 I understand they can move some of the money around. I don't understand all of it. I never said Jared was getting 65 million a year. I was using straight numbers 30 mil for St Brown 28 mil for Sewell and average top quarterback pay 50 mil for Jared. Moving the money around a little bit you might be able to sign two more elite players, and still have to release all of our top rookie players at the end of their rookie contracts. Pretty simple reasoning. Draft and replace players that we can't afford on their second contract
@matthewholmes9570
@matthewholmes9570 21 күн бұрын
@@CarlThomas13 st browns cap hit is really around 22.5 and penei around 25 have to look more at the guaranteed money but it should be lower than that from moving money I just said 65 cuz that's how much it would have to be to get to around 108. I read that the penei contract is only 9 percent of the cap and even less depending on how much the cap goes up the next couple of years. I think lookin back we will see that these early extensions were actually steals for what they would have cost is we waited

@@CarlThomas13 I do agree with the draft and replace and signing more elite players they have to pay at least a couple more but if they can keep the core together they should be contenders for years to come
@CarlThomas13
@CarlThomas13 21 күн бұрын
@@matthewholmes9570 if elite QBs are going to command 20% of the cap, either the cap has to go way up, or there needs to be a limit on how much each player can be paid. Personally I think 20 mil is plenty enough for a QB. 50 mil is ridiculous. Not good business. I think 4.8mil times 53 man roster equals the cap. For every player that demands more than that, there's another player that gets less. We have multi-billionaire owners, and a few elite multi-millionaire players. But if a QB gets 50, a top receiver gets 30, the proportions are way off for the rest of the team. I don't know the ins and outs of the contract regarding revenue and TV rights. Usually the owners benefit by far. I don't have the answers. If QBs are allowed to get 50, I'd like to see the least amount paid to a player at 5 mil, not 1 mil

I think it’s likely more about Goff’s agent wanting a market setting contract and the Lions recognizing that while Goff fits their system perfectly, he’s still not a superstar who makes those extra plays. At a certain point, you wonder if the drop off is so extreme that it isn’t worth saving 45 million a year for a couple years. That’s two excellent players in his place.

Jared Goff is a great leader and makes great decisions; however, his athleticism is subpar for this league now days. He throws too many ducks and has too many balls under thrown. By adding depth at positions of future needs they aren't forced into overpaying anyone on their resigning. The competition shows the staff who 'their guys' are. They have options and they have shown that they will pay their guys who produce. They are going to have to pay someone in the Secondary, with this depth of age, talent and contracts they will know where the value is.
