So nothing wrong with the train cars. Mostly neglected tracks…nice. 150 cars in Vancouver which will start being retired next year. Vancouver Mark 1 likely have several times the mileage tho.

A financially wise decision by both the TTC and Detroit
@NEKRWSPHERE

Old TTC cars were earlier purchased by Nigeria. And two of my friends who spent some time there said that even with these old trains, - their subway system runs 10 times smoother than the TTC, without constant delays, fires, "fire investigations", "security incidents" and "security incident investigations". Personally, I'm well travelled and I have NEVER seen the kind of atrocity the TTC is ANYWHERE, even in much poorer countries of Eastern Europe. TTC must really pride itself at being the kind of dysfunctional, incompetent, price gouging mess that it is. It's 2023 and the system still isn't accessible for people with disabilities with many stations downtown having no functional escalators or no escalators at all. Even the elevators are in constant disrepair and people in wheelchairs are told to get off two stations away from where they need to go, and take the bus. TTC has no plans of changing for the better, and any funds they will receive for these trains will be squandered, or at the very best, - spent on unnecessary, wasteful, cosmetic repairs.

TTC riders foot the bill for something like 70% of the TTC budget. The province likes to swoop in and offer up a few billion here & there for line upgrades or extensions, but typically that requires the feds and city to put in matching funds. Frequently, Ottawa isn't feeling very generous, and the city's operating budget is $15b, so an extra $3b charge for a new subway would represent a nice property tax increase. It does, however, tend to stop the requests for help with line extensions for a few years.
@NEKRWSPHERE
@NEKRWSPHERE 7 ай бұрын
I wish it was all about funding. The TTC has no viable long-term planning model, and is terrible at prudent funding allocation. When you have limited funding - you still have a choice whether to replace the tiling and upgrade the aesthetic appeal of a subway station, or to improve its FUNCTIONALITY, such as install an extra escalator (something which is often much cheaper than large scale cosmetic upgrades). The cash that was spent on the last 9 cosmetic upgrades to stations could have been enough to build close to 30% of the long-awaited relief line, in fact scaling down such upgrades could have given the city a relief line a decade ago. Another part of it is the culture of absenteeism, perpetual lateness and slacking off which is being completely ignored by the management. Every week I see drivers leaving 15-20 minutes behind schedule because they're too busy talking to their buddies on the phone, right in front of the bus jam packed with people, displaying utter disrespect towards them. It's "normal" to have 2 or 3 buses arrive at a bus stop at the same time, followed by a waiting period of 45 minutes or longer. Or take the change of subway train operators. Out of every 10 crew changes - 3 take 5 minutes or longer, because the operator is customarily late, and it's seen as normal, - not even an apology to customers on the train. I haven't seen anything remotely similar anywhere else, and I honestly don't see how better funding could change this. Nor could it change reckless driving habits (like haphazard lane changes, rapid braking that endangers passengers' safety, or going 60 in the 30 km/h zone). torontolife.com/deep-dives/who-broke-the-ttc-inside-torontos-public-transit-disaster/@@georgejones8784

The underlying technology was discontinued, so it's impossible to extend or upgrade the RT. It would have to be pulled out and rebuilt with newer technology, which was in the plans, but Scarborough repeatedly complained about the RT and demanded a subway instead, which is what they're getting. But subways take ten years to build, hence the decade of people needing to ride buses during construction.

The technology is good. TTC was neglecting line 3. With proper track and train maintenance and expansion, this system works extremely well and is very reliable and frequent in Vancouver. Detroit like line 3 is severely limited Detroit was supposed to be much larger than it was. As it stands it is kinda pointless. Perhaps they may expand it a bit. Interesting that there are no issues with the cars as they did upgrading to the cars as YVR did several years back.

@@peskypigeonx Montreal is certainly better and larger. Vancouver rates quite well for the size and design. My other half recently went to Toronto and found signage kinda poor. Where she was going she would have used line 3 had it been in operation. Shuttle bus was not well marked. Rest of the system is likely in better shape than many and they are trying to make it better.
