Quick video showing the common reason why a Detroit can run away. The newer spring racks pretty much solved the run away issues, so engines with spring racks normally don't have emergency shut down flaps. Before I start a Detroit that has sat for a year or more I always pull the valve cover to confirm the rack is free.

Last week, My Dad unknowingly bump-started a recently acquired 671 powered dump truck that had been sitting for 10 years. By some miracle, it just sat there and idled perfectly while running on the decade old fuel in the tanks. I was horrified when he told me later in the day that he had it running, and fortunately this video existed to better explain my reaction.

I own a large boat with two 4-71s, in Oct the raw water heat exchangers get winterized, in April/May I open the raw water seacocks and start them both up after setting 7 mos. One such Spring start-up I was in the engine room crouched between the engines, hit the start button on one and it took off screaming. My first thought, closing the fuel line valve would stop it, no that didn't work, it began sucking fuel up through the return line without a shut-off valve. Final thought, nervously fumbling to get the air cleaner off, but having nothing within reach to block the air intake I pulled my T-shirt off, rolled it into a tight ball and held it over the opening, that suffocating the engine until it stopped. Yes, later found that one injector held the rack open at full throttle. A scary situation, but alone crouched next to a runaway was the worst. No I didn't run away, just got to it.

A CO2 fire extinguisher is a very good idea with a Detroit. I have two Detroits, a 6v53 and a 6v92T, the 53 absolutely had stuck injectors and I knew it so I pulled the valve covers and worked the rack until they were free. Luckily I didn't have a runaway but that CO2 bottle was always within reach. The 92T is a fire pump engine rated at 496 HP, you better believe I have that bottle right up my ass whenever I fire it up! Haven't had to use it yet, but, better safe than sorry

Never had a runaway, I used to work on 8&12v71 and 92 series Detroit’s years ago. I can’t believe how dry that 6v looks, start with the Governor Housing because the Fork in their can freeze then go down through both Links to the injector Tubes then check the “spring “ in the Injector Rack For return movement. A good oiling usually works most of the time and finally, the kill flap on top of the Blower Housing has a Pawl mechanism with a Bowden Cable attached, check the mechanism hasn’t stuck tight, again, a bit of oil usually does the trick. Finally, run the Engine and check it stops then restart and let it scream!- you’ve just reached Detroit heaven!

I have a 1960's inline 6-71 DD that I run twice a year. The flapper was rust-welded open and the cable leading into the cab did nothing. I removed the blower cover and had heat applied to free up the flapper shaft. The return springs on the shaft were also shot but the shaft/flappers are now freed up. My mentor attached a new cable to the shaft and ran it back into the cab where it can be pulled in case of an emergency. I hear a lot of grumblings about Detroits not having power but for an engine that was in production for 60 years, I'd say that that was a successful design.

I just seen your channel and your video on preventing runaway. I am now a subscriber. Have you ever have a 671 run backwards? In 1972 one of my first jobs I was dumping dirt in the fill and as I pulled forward I stalled the engine. I pushed the clutch in real fast and it came back to life only it sounded really bad and exhaust smoke was pouring out of the airbox . It was sucking air through the exhaust . I shut off the fuel and the starter got things spinning right again. It did scare the heck out of me but I knew what happened. I had a Sachs 2 stroke dirt bike do the same thing in 1971. Just before you go cranking a detroit that's been sitting for a while and you have verified the racks move, prime fuel system with a good pump, an old pump off the blower run on a drill or unbolt yours and put drill on and check return fuel into bucket, the injectors need to be full of fuel before you start actuating them by cranking over motor as they are a unit injector and are lubricated by the fuel or you may end up with a stuck one later on, the other thing is only non turbo motors have a flap, no matter which engine you have always have a CO2 fire extinguisher right there as it will stop any diesel motor if discharged into intake, never try to block intake on turbo 2stroke detroit to stop it, as they have different blower seals and can be turned inside out and allow oil and air into blower thru shaft area and then you cannot stop it unless you have CO2 so have CO2 every time you go to start an unknown engine

I had a 4-71 on a tug boat mated to a flywheel plate running a hydraulic pump for a towing winch. The set screw on one of the rack fingers came loose, and the engine was stuck at full fuel on one cylinder with the other 3 racked out to shut off. Other than the engine not wanting to rev up it didn’t have any audible sound to tell you what was wrong with it. It just sat there idling away with 1 cylinder pushing the other 3. We also found out the damper door gasket leaked because we had to shut off the fuel and let it starve to get it to shut off.

Ok so I’m confused here. I thought it was called a runaway because the engine blows a turbo seal and starts running on its own oil. And because it can drink up as much oil as it wants it can severely over rev. Wouldn’t the situation in the video just be the engine stuck at full throttle?? You could cut the fuel line and it would shut off.
@detroitgarage9430
@detroitgarage9430 Жыл бұрын
For most diesel with external injection pumps this is the case. For Detroit Diesels this is different as each injector is it's own pump. Once the rack is stuck in the fuel fuel position the governor no longer controls the fuel to the injectors. This cause the engine to runaway in a similar way other diesels run away from oil. If a Detroit runs away, you can stop it by either shutting off the air or fuel source.

@@detroitgarage9430 thanks,your videos are far from the best ive seen and learned so munch,im still waiting for the blower to come in and i will defiantly check that,what you said about the injector clamp loose sounds like the problem,and the other thing i noticed,when you did the timing,you mentioned the order the engine fires and looking up my model its a right hand turning engine,so when the mechanic did it 2years ago i clearly remember him doing a left hand rotation timing and in the manual the engine is a right hand so the engine is not tuned right,after seeing your videos im confident i can tune the engine and torq the engine also,thanks mario

@@detroitgarage9430 well received the blower today and a little disappointed,someone told me to exchange the blower rather than rebuild,but the exchange one looks alot older than mine as mine was a 94,but what bothers me is that its all pitted with holes where the inlet attaches to,even rust in the holes,all along where the gasket attaches inket side of the blower,so i called back the place and thinking of rebuilding the one i gave them and just exchanging this one,the ups is more expensive than the job,haha and then another thing popped up and the governor housing which i sent all together came,they i guess cleaned it and painted the exterior,but looking at the interior where the weights are on the shaft,i see cracks on the housing,one is like a inch and other small,now im not sure if the housing was already cracked or maybe in the shipping,but what i dont get is they cleaned all the oil and painted the exterior,how can you not see the cracks,when i was not even looking at that and found them,maybe thats why they didnt attach the governor housing to the blower,haha, but now not sure what to do,maybe they were there from the start ,maybe it wont cause any issues,so not sure what to do with that,the blower i was going to send back but after seeing all this not sure if i even want to work with these guys,anyways thanks for responding and sorry so long,thanks mario

Hi I liked you videos seems like very knowledgeable on this old 2 store detroits , I have 8v92 silver single turbo .. I have a bit of etheir oil or fuel leaking on the side of the blower passenger side seems like it might be coming from turbo is right in top ? Do you know if this dangerous i heard alot of detroit you do.not want to have a leaking seal in blower can get oil and run away ? I've been a bit worry this can happn ,? I believe truck has aftermarket solenoid for fuel cut off looks similar to the one on your other video the one you installed believe it's in the same spot as yours ? How does that work ? Just want to have piece of mind and be ready for anything that can come.up ?

It's hard to answer your question without seeing exactly where and how much oil fuel is leaking. It's better to isolate and repair the leak.:) The fuel shutoff turn the fuel rack to no fuel and the shuts down. Get a copy of a Detroit 92 Series manual and have a read on it as they cover all the aspects of this engine. Detroit make really good easy to read manuals and is an asset to have.:) Thanks for watching.:)

I know Jack shit about engines but like in this video the rack being wide open and stuck it’s not a runaway situation, it’s a full throttle because a true runaway runs running on its own oil… both situations resemble each other but a open rack is not the same as running on your own oil

It doesn't matter if it's running away on oil or fuel, the results are the same. With a stuck rack in the open position the engine is ungoverned. Although the fuels may be different, (diesel or oil) both condition result in the same ending.:) Thanks for watching.:)

The best way to not have a runaway with a 2stroke Detroit is to change that oil throwing, noisy' torque less paper weight with something else! I've driven them in big trucks. I was glad when Detroit stopped making them. Not that the New Detroit's are much better.

Hello DetroitGarage ... very informative video about avoiding runaways ... thank you so much ... my '78 DD 6-71N (Marine [serial numbers ID them as 'Industrial']) engines currently have no lube oil in them and have not been run since end of August of 2020 ... as I was in the middle of adding custom-made oil drain hoses to the oil pan drain plug holes when other issues arose. A quick check of pictures I have of my rack tubes shows me that I don't have the individual spring-style rack tubes ... which probably explains why I do have cable-actuated air shutoff valves ... and should follow your pre-start advice once I'm in a position to run these engines again. BTW, I noticed 'Russam Holdings Inc. Vernon, B.C.' emblazoned on the truck cab door nearby the 6V71 engine you were demonstrating with and am wondering how close you are to me in sunny Tsawwassen. Perhaps we can get in touch ( sixoh48ohtoo5too3nine ), as I sorely need DD expertise in order to deal with a fuel system leak (to address 51.56% fuel dilution of my Port eng. lube oil). K Mc
