Deus Ex (2000) was widely praised for its melodious and ambient music which incorporates a number of genres, such as classical, jazz, and techno.
The soundtrack of Deus Ex was extolled by critics for aptly complementing the gritty and haunting atmosphere predominant throughout the game.
All listed tracks were composed by Alexander Brandon, Dan Gardopee, Michiel van den Bos and Reeves Gabrels. A compact disc of the Deus Ex soundtrack was only included in the "Game of the Year" edition and is not available for separate purchase, but all tracks are readily available on the internet. Originally only thirty tracks were included with the re-release, with tracks thirty-one through forty-one considered as extras.
During play, the music will change to a different iteration of the current song based on the player's actions. For instance, this usually occurs when the player starts a conversation, engages in combat, or transitions to the next level.

This level is so genius in the sense that it was completely empty. After all the action in Paris you finally had a breather..and it just felt so weird to relax, your brain just couldn't accept it and stand down. Incredible pacing level wise. Another great example is Hong Kong. Everyone is chasing you throughout the game up to that point and finally you get into a crowded market with women, children and other civilians and you feel so claustrophobic and untrusting of EVERYONE. Incredible Game.

And you can discover all sorts of things, items, book, keys, little secrets all the way through the mansion, all the while getting a live commentary from the daughter. What a unique idea for a level, and it totally worked.

I have to agree, was a strange level where you could just look around, you keep thinking something is about to jump out at you but not. And the stories from Nicolette provided some real tension as well. Felt like an escort mission where the escort could head home after a job well done.

That level felt pretty creepy. Pretty much the creepiest Deus Ex ever felt, even Panhaea Complex was not this level of unsettling. Eerie serenity, that uncomfortable sensation that it is something constantly watching you, that somehow, this place here, cannot be safe, Nicolette prancing around with her romantic nostalgic ramble, while you're WILL FIND NO HELP HERE. BETH DUCLARE HAS BEEN ALREADY DISSECTED AND PLACED INTO CRYOGENIC STORAGE.

The brilliance of this song is the feeling of loss. The electronic instruments indicate that you are in a high-tech world, but the poignant melody suggests that, on the way to the world as exists, the innocence of the past was lost and this empty mansion is a cruel reminder of that.

True. Deus Ex can still be enjoyed to this day. Hell, I think the atmosphere, story, gameplay and soundtrack (which pretty much make up a game, not just graphics) are still better than many new games that have come out. Deus Ex is a master piece. A game that can be enjoyed even decades after it came out. :)

I look at gamers with contempt , incapable of understanding the appeal of platformers like mario bros or the popular fps at the time half life Until i played this game in 2000 without any aforementioned knowledge of it. I was wrong, video game as a medium is capable of much complexity in storytelling, offering overwhelming agency to the players and even preach coherent philosophical arguments that was impressive for me at the time (14 year old) This game shows the true potential video game has and 15 years later it still has no rival to speak of. Its sad that game progress since then is limited to fancy new graphical options.

+TheinnerCircl3 Not all games have to be a philosofical ride or morallly deep complex. Only because they don't have complexity in their storytelling, doesn't mean they won't share that in mechanics, gameplay and difficult. By the way, if not for SMB to had saved the gaming industry of it's crash, and for Half Life not had introduced a moving plot on the fps, maybe there wouldn't be Deus Ex.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the crash you've referring to only affected console gaming, not the entire gaming industry. Being a PC game, Deus Ex could definitely have still existed if Super Mario Bros hadn't existed (don't get me wrong; Mario is my jam!). As for Half-Life, I agree with you there.

Deus Ex was an absolute triumph in the history of PC gaming. Storyline, Soundtrack, Level Design, the suspense - everything was memorable about the game. 9 years have passed, and I have yet to find one game that made such an impact on my mind as DX1. It just dawned on me that I've been listening to this game's soundtrack for good thirteen years now, and how I'm still getting as much enjoyment from it as I did when I first heard it, if not even moreso thanks to all the great memories of listening to it throughout all those those years. If there is one single way to judge the absolute value of an entertainment medium, it must be by just how deeply it is able to ingrain itself into one's psyche.

I wish the newer DE games put as much effort into their soundtrack as the original. They are not bad, but neither are they special, like this.

It’s 2020, I remember playing this a long time ago... for no reason in particular did this comment give me immense nostalgia. Perhaps it is the music coupled with the fond memories of the past. The Portuguese have a word, “Saudade”. Generally in English it can be attempted to be translated as “missingness” or a general sense of longing for something once had. I think that it what I feel. Thank you sir, your comment struck a powerful nerve.

This music makes everything dramatic. Was taking a piss while listening to this... never has taking care of business been so epic. 😤

"Music will change based on the player's actions" That was what happened with Unreal, as well. Just reminds me of "Shared Dig" and "Skaarj Attacks", which were in the same track.

Try out System Shock 2, E.Y.E Cybermancy and VtmB, not exactly the same but follow some of the design philosophies of Deus Ex.

the new Prey is pretty good too. Thief, and Dishonored. But dishonored is more of action rather than rpg. I still love em.

One of my favourite missions in the game. It was so nice to not have to fight off or sneak around a bunch of troopers, but just explore a mysterious mansion with this music playing. And Icarus' voice lines are extremely creepy.
