The anthem is also known as Austrian Imperial anthem or anthem of the people (Volkshymne) and is the melody for "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser".

"Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" (God Save Emperor Francis) is an anthem to Francis II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and later of the Austrian Empire. The lyrics were by Lorenz Leopold Haschka (1749-1827), and the melody by Joseph Haydn. It is sometimes called the "Kaiserhymne" (Emperor's Hymn). Haydn's tune has since been widely employed in other contexts: in works of classical music, in Christian hymns, in alma maters, and as the tune of the "Deutschlandlied", the national anthem of Germany.

Anthem of probably the longest lasting Empire of all times ... the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (800-1806)

Jay Collins yep although this anthem was only used for the final 9 years. As far as longest lasting Empire, the HRE was continuous from 962-1806 (having been created by one of Charlemagne’s regional successor states, the East Frankish Kingdom/Kingdom of the Germans under a Saxon dynasty, which reconquered the former Frankish Roman Empire, so you can’t date it from 800 sadly). But still, the only one I can think of that’s close is the Greek Roman Empire (Byzantines) from 476-1453.

@@TheLocalLt This anthem was never used as anthem of the HRE. From 1797 this anthem was originally used only for the House of Austria and became later the official anthem of the Austrian Empire (1826 to 1918)

salt2live the house of Austria ran the Holy Roman Empire and the German Confederation, effectively making this a defacto anthem of both. Sure the king and people would be mad if the emperor showed up in Bavaria and they started playing this, but he’s the emperor, he can do what he wants.

@@TheLocalLt You are right the Habsburgs ran all these.... but this anthem was neither de iure nor de facto used as anthem in other principalities of the HRE from 1797-1806 or later in the german confederation. So the anthem was just used in the Habsburg principalities in the very last years of the HRE and officially later in the Austrian Empire. In your example of playing the anthem when the emperor visits Bavaria... This would have been nothing other than in our days on a state visit, you play both anthems but you do not take it over and it does not automatically become the official anthem of the entire empire. It would have been different if it had been declared the official anthem of the entire empire and had been used in this way.

salt2live yeah I mean I understand why they did it, the emperor’s position nominally being at the behest of by nobles in the Salic German tradition. But that system was primal and had no way of forseeing money’s influence over future policies. A corrupt multigenerational dynasty like the habsburgs wasn’t supposed to be possible in Germany. So I get why they paid lip service to that, it was obviously extremely important to many of the principalities that had especially fierce sectarian feelings such as Protestant states.

Sí, eso es un problema, aunque en realidad este himno era el de Francisco II, el último emperador del Sacro Imperio, un imperio que fue fundado por Carlomagno, que es una figura respetada por todos los europeos. Por otra parte, si solo se empleara la versión instrumental, como ocurre con la Marcha Real, quizás el problema no sea tan grave.

Nix DEUTSCHLAND -> ÖSTERREICH ab 1922 und wieder ab 1952 deutsche Hymne. 1797 vom Niederösterreicher Joseph Haydn komponiert. Nach der Niederlage im ersten Weltkrieg lehnte die österreichische Regierung in einer Abstimmung die Hymne (leider) ab und Deutschland übernahm die Melodie. So far to history.

Ja und was sind Österreicher? Deutsche. Was war der heilige römische Kaiser? Deutscher Kaiser. Eine Unterscheidung ist hier müßig.

@@dr.ludwig Auch wenn die Österreicher "Deutsche" waren, es gab besten Falls umgangsprachlich einen "deutschen Kaiser", aber nie de iure einen "deutschen Kaiser", der über das HRR geherrscht hat, sondern nur einen deutschen König. Der Kaiser war bis zum Ende des HRR "römischer Kaiser". Einen "deutschen Kaiser" gab es erst seit 1870 und dies nicht einmal 50 Jahre lang, sondern nur bis 1918. Die obige Hymne war auch nie offizielle Hymne des HRR, sondern war ab 1797 Hymne des Hauses Österreich und von 1826 bis 1918 die offizielle Kaiserhymne des Kaisertums Österreich. Insofern ist die CD-Betitelung nicht korrekt!

@@salt2live Tatsächlich war sein offizieller Titel im HRR sogar "Römisch-Deutscher Kaiser". Dein Argument macht also keinen Sinn.

@@Meftu Abgesehen davon, dass das HRR ja nicht nur aus "deutschen" Staaten" bestand, war er freilich Kaiser des gesamten HRR. Dies bedeutet aber nicht, dass die Haydn Hymne je offizielle Hymne des HRR war (sie wurde selbst im nachfolgenden "Kaisertum Österreich" erst 1826 offizielle Volkshymne, obwohl es die Hymne seit 1797 gab und das Kaiserreich Österreich seit 1804 bestand). Die Hymne "Heil dir im Siegeskranz" gab es ja bereits einige Jahre vor (1793) der Haydn-Hymne, war aber ebenso nie deutsche "Nationalhymne", sondern nur Hymne des preuss.Köngs bzw. ab 1871 des dt. Kaisers. Beide Hymnen entstanden zu einem Zeitpunkt, als das HRR seinem Ende entgegen ging, beide waren aber nie offizielle Nationalhymnen im HRR oder im Fall der Preussenhymne des dt. Kaiserreichs.
