Yup I remember that afternoon in the summer of 77 as a 7 year old. Our sleepaway camp took us on a field-trip to see the movie. Sitting in the dark theater and hearing the first note blast thru the theater as the Star Wars logo appeared on the screen and we knew we were in for something special. Even with the sequels which I saw in the theater but don't hold a fondness for hearing the first note and seeing the logo still gives me goosebumps and takes me back to that summer in 1977.

I remember seeing the remake in 2006 and they used the same original opening score and even though the remake was not nearly as good as the 1978 original even at age 36 I still got goosebumps as the first notes of John Williams score played. The Superman score and the Star Wars score are still two of Johns best.

I was seven years old when my dad took me to see this in the movie theater. To a little kid, that movie blew my little mind. I was no longer on earth, I was out on missions in the universe. It wasn't going to school on the bus, it was a mission to save Alderan. It wasn't going to get groceries with mom, we were going to save the princess from the space station. We weren't at the beach, we were on Tatooine searching for Droids! No book or movie changed my view of self or literature like Starwars. That day in 1977 was created a life long Sci-Fy fan!

This is an example of why music education is so important in our schools and in our communities. I mean, John Williams started taking piano lessons when he was a kid, and also learned brass instruments. Along the way, he studied arranging and composing. He then began working as a pianist, arranger and composer. All through that time, he had teachers. Then you take the musicians in the orchestra. They all started on their instruments with a teacher. When you hear people like this perform, you're listening to a combined hundreds of thousands of hours spent practicing. You're also listening to (probably) a combined hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on lessons and higher education. You're also looking at well over a million dollars' worth of instruments and instrument insurance. My point is, that without music education, music teachers and the strive to become as good as you can be, concerts like this would not happen. It's this wondrous composer and these stunningly good musicians and their teachers who make it happen.

Where I am, the minister of education has decimated arts for STEM. Unfortunately not everyone is cut out to be an engineer. There are those that are cut out to be musicians, artists and story tellers. I'm an engineer, but I have this stuck on my wall at work: "If we were a medical school, and you were here as a med student practicing appendectomies, you'd take your work very seriously because you would imagine that some night at 2 AM someone is going to waltz into your emergency room and you're going to have to save their lives. Well, my friends, someone at 8 PM is going to walk into your concert hall and bring you a mind that is confused, a heart that is overwhelmed, a soul that is weary. Whether they go out whole again will depend on how well you do your craft". Every once in a while I 'catch' someone staring at the text. I think they are the people walking into the concert hall.

It's a holdover from the traditional grand opera. Each main character gets their own theme and "upcoming arias" are hinted at in the overture. You basically compose backwards: first the final theme, then use fragments earlier (nowadays we might call it foreshadowing). There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. John Williams is always open about his writing techniques. His ability to write complex dovetailing phrases and melody lines (counterpoint), while maintaining everything accessible, is absolutely sublime. Definitely my favorite film composer.

It is mid-summer 1977. We have heard so much about this movie from family and friends that we decided it's OK to take our oldest son, who was five, to see this movie. Our other son was just two at this time and much too young. Thru our credit union at work my wife got reserved tickets so we would not have to wait in those looooong lines. As such when the theater opened we who had reserved tickets were allowed in 10 minutes before everyone else. So we got our popcorn, soda, and candy first, then we were escorted to the reserved seating area in the center of the theater with other families. With our son sitting between us, the rolling script comes on and I read it to him. I can see he is transfixed, staring at the screen. From that point on until the end of the movie some two hours later his eyes never left the screen. He hardly ate any popcorn or drank his soda! Usually when we would take him to a movie, while it's playing he would ask us questions about what's going on. Not this time. Other than a yip, or a laugh, or some other reaction, his eyes never left the screen! When it was over, the people screamed and applauded with joy at what we had just seen. IT WAS AMAZING!!! Now I have all the Star Wars movies on DVD and VHS. Full packages all. But there is nothing like when I saw that first Star Wars movie with our son so many years ago!

I had a similar reaction to watching Superman - the movie in 1978 in my local cinema. The audience was nearly all "grown-ups" but we were all like kids in the Saturday morning kids cinema. When Superman caught Lois Lane with one hand and the helicopter in the other and the people down below on the street all cheered - so did we in the cinema. It was areal life enhancing experience. The very next day I was ordering the soundtrack records in my local music shop. I have them today and treasure them still a life enhancing experience thanks to Maestro Williams

Forget that this a Soundtrack to an iconic, legendary piece of movie history, this is my most favourite piece of classical music of all time. John Williams can be placed up there with Bach, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, Vivaldi, to name but a few, and all the other greatest classical composers of all time. I was a (not very good) Horn player in HS when the first Star Wars came out. That music hit me like no other had up to that point, and inspired me to actually practice so I could be able to play it. As I've ended up being a HS/JHS Band director and played in several very good regional orchestras (playing JW's music umpteen times, still gives me goosebumps after 40+ years), it's not very much of a stretch to say that Mr. William's music literally changed my life.

Just incredible all around. To think...many musicians in this orchestra were the little kids who first saw Star Wars when it was brand new. What a thrill it must be for them to be where they are now, with this master composer and conductor, playing music of their childhood. It is heart-warming and joyous. As a musician, I get the feels no matter what. But this performance had some extra something special. The force was with them all, for sure. Bravi tutti.
