Sorry for the wait! This video is all about finally cancelling your ancient home phone line through your cable company, and how to keep it through Google Voice for free! It also touches on how I cut my bill in half after my cable company doubled it every month, and even tripled my internet speed while I was at it!
NOTE: The "call" to my ISP's support line is simulated to walk you through what the process should be like. That was not a recording of a real representative.

When 5G arrives by the end of 2018 in UK and rollout in 2019, landlines are dead, also sat dishes, tv freeview ariel's, fm radio, even DAB. Sky know this and now ending sat and going full by new Qbox just like Tivo (Virginbox). Even EETV box now starting to get tv from broadband instead of freeview. Freesat, freeview, landlines, 2G, 3G, fm, dab, land broadband by adsl and fibre be dead, as 5G be doing all of this. 5G be doing as miniWifimax and not like 3.95G(LTE) or 4G(LTEA). Most 4G in UK is actually 3.95G so they save technology money and spend the budget later on 5G. EE 3.95G network is currently faster that Vodaphones LTEA 4G network. EE patched their 3G network up, just like freeserve analog 3Com 56K modems went V90 and V92.

When getting the next deal with the Retention/Loyalty rep, it's a good idea to ask for the conversation identifier (or their employee identifier), so as to better ensure that you actually get the stated deal. The group that's porting your number out (from your old provider) may not necessarily take the time to review any written notes to adjust pricing, and by that time, without any record of the original conversation, you'll have lost the leverage that you had earlier.

꧁Inolvidable꧂ how did you put this together
@inolvidable.
@inolvidable. 4 жыл бұрын
@@marchellejordan347 1. Buy OBI on Amazon for two lines. 2. Open an account on Google Voice, and transfer your number or get a new one. The new one is free, but transferring a number is, I think, $10. 3. Setup and activate OBI on their website. They also have support. 4. Add the device under Google Voice setup page. Setting this up seems a little confusing or complex, but it is not. Once you understand the idea, it will become second nature. The good part is that your Google account lets you text from your computer, and you can set it up to receive emails with the voice messages or text messages. You can also transfer calls to that number or from that number to others. You can also record calls, etc. There are many settings to use. You will have records of all your calls on GoogleVoice page. It is like an email account, but with calls. Very convenient. Connect the OBI to your Internet with Ethernet cable to you router, and then your telephones to the phone jack on the back of the device, and you should be ready to go. One this is done, you will rarely have to touch the device. The quality is excellent, and you will never have to pay for any service.

I've had my Obi 14 months now and I love it! I prepaid Anveo $25 for 1 yr of E911 service. Each E911 call cost $5 so that gives me 5 E911 calls per year. If your setting up for a sick elderly who might exceed 5 E911 calls, you may want to put more money into the prepaid account. It doesn't roll over if not used. You have to renew the service after a year but price stayed at $25. I test mine monthly by calling 933 and so far everything has been great and no problems. This video helped give me the confidence to let go of AT&T. I set mine up along with 3 of my friends. They also love not paying for phone service. My friend's mother has a vacation home in the mountains where cell service is bad and the Obi was perfect. She was thrilled to get this setup. Thanks so much for your video. It really helped me more than I can say. May God bless you! 😇

I'm the first person out of my friends and family to ditch the landline. There is ONE big advantage to keeping it, however. There are a lot more regulations in place to ensure robust service. If you live in a hurricane or disaster prone area you really should consider keeping your landline. Also, if you're in a big city and own/rent a house, consider going with over the air TV. You can get excellent quality local channels. Supplement that with a good streaming service About 80% of most people watch on TV is available for free over the air.

WARNING to those who record phone calls. In some states, like here in Florida, if you record a phone call without the other persons permission or knowledge, you have committed a felony. This simulation is fine as DeV was not recording a live person.
@mcshackelford3878
@mcshackelford3878 7 жыл бұрын
warren warburton Eleven states require the consent of every party to a phone call or conversation in order to make the recording lawful. These "two-party consent" laws have been adopted in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington. However most, if not all (I don't know the law in every state ;) ) including Florida are misdemeanors if done privately with no illegal intent or done for commercial gain. Illinois ruled the "two party consent" law as unconstitutional in 2014 and should probably be removed from this list but technically they have changed the law so they are still on the "two party consent" list. Chances are very unlikely one would ever be convicted of a felony unless a repeat offender recording calls for illegal purposes or commercial gain. Federal law is "one party consent" with some reasonable exceptions. If you are unsure, get permission in writing or on recording first is the best policy.

This is of course an older video but people will still be viewing it for a time and I still wanted to chime in on the topic (because land lines are not dead yet) and add a perspective that I think many miss (This is a longer post, warning): There is still one thing about land lines that as old as the tech is, is still superior to all others even today - it's stability. In many situations where VOIP and cellular services will go down (disasters, weather, etc), land lines many times will continue to work. They don't need electricity, and many times the lines are protected from the elements. There have been several instances in my life where my land line continued to work when all others died. I'll give two quick examples below... 1) Twice we've had bad ice storms in my area (suburbs of Atlanta) that caused power to go out for many days. People's VOIP phones go out immediately or within hours if they have a backup battery. Within 3 days their cellular service gets spotty or goes out completely, as the cell towers with generator backups go down, and the carriers aren't able to refuel their generators promptly. But... my land line kept working. This has happened twice in my area and both times literally nearly everyone in my neighborhood wound up at my house to use my land line - the only working phone around the immediate area except for one other. Another time a tornado took out a cell tower nearby - along again with power. Bingo - the land line kept working. Hurricane Sandy in the NYC/NJ area a few years back did the same thing - all VOIP and cellular went down but the few land lines connected to the pay phones that were left? Kept working. The Mayor at the time ordered MORE land line based phones installed after that as a result. You get the point. Land lines don't necessarily make sense for *everyone* to have anymore. But it would be foolish to completely dismiss and get rid of the technology, until such time that VOIP/Cellular systems can be made to be just as stable as they are - and so far they're not close. Until that time they're still handy, so even if you don't use one yourself, please don't support AT&T's effort to have all of them dismantled.
@tieline1333
@tieline1333 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on how the VoIP systems are set up. Sadly companies like to save money and not invest further in making it work during power outages. Also, you can call a 'VoIP' Line a Landline since the definition of a landline is a fixed-line phone that uses wires to transmit audio/data. I think the term you are looking for would be 'Traditional POTS' The Cable Companies COULD run drops with 12v to power modems and keep service online but they DONT. But yes It is not VoIP/Digital Landlines that are bad. It's the CABLE COMPANIES and PROVIDERS!!

Great material, DeV! Really informative. I would suggest a quick headsup for your followers: landlines work independently from the power grid. So if there are power outages on your area, and suppose there´s no power, and your cell or families' mobiles' have run out and need to reach them in case of an emergency there'll be a problem. DeV, in your opinion, what would be a workable solution? A No-Break system? JUst unplug from the Obi box, and hook it back up to the phone outlet? Thanks!

Although Magic Jack isn't free, it does have a box that plugs into your router so your computer doesn't have to stay on 24/7 so you don't miss a call. But when my paid subscription is up I just might switch to Google voice. It's just a second line I use on my desk anyway so no need to migrate the number, I'm fine with a new one. Magic Jack does have a nice feature that when I get a voice mail it sends me an e--mail with the message attached so I always know within a minute of getting it.

I think Google Voice in the UK is limited to just that or per call charges at the moment. The cool thing about the box is that it doesn't work with _just_ Google Voice. UK VoIP to real phones are rare but there's a few like Voipfone that I think would work with this. It should support most SIP services so if you find one over there, it might be worth a shot. Most UK ISPs require a landline for service anyways though so at that point it might just be a duplicate service.

Used the info provided here and learned that currently Google Voice will port Cellular numbers or lines NOT a Landline phone line. Had to port the Landline number to a cell carrier and a day later the number was valid as a Cell number. A Google Voice verification call is made to your Cell line (the ported one) for service verification and once that checks your number is fully OK for porting. I had no problems after that.

Great video. Very, very informative. It covers most of what I needed to know about doing the same thing. Love the advice about tactics in how to inform the cable company. What I need to know now is how to hook up the six extensions in the house so I can use any of them. I currently have Verizon and it has a battery backup. That has been great during power outages. Any tips or leads on how to take care of that would be appreciated.

Land lines are handy when your mobile phone battery is depleted, or when your mobile phone is lost, stolen, or broken. If you have a problem with your mobile phone you can call your provider (phone service provider or cell phone provider) on your land line and have them talk you through fixing the problem with your mobile phone service (or with the mobile phone itself). This video is very helpful and I may consider porting my landline over to Google Voice. (I already have a Google Voice number, but for the many places that have my land line number, it would be helpful to have a second Google Voice number. I would just associate it with one of my other GMail accounts.)

When my parents moved they had to switch from Comcast to Cox, but they wanted to keep their home phone number that they've had for over 20 years. I fax through Google Voice using the Obi200, it's a little slow, but it does work. Nice thing is you can set a second google number to the thing and add a special ring that your fax can answer. Here's a couple things I'd like to point out if you are watching in 2019: 1. Not sure if Obihai still works, but I looked into setting up my own Asterisk PBX on Google voice last year, but Google yanked support for it and updated their EULA to prohibit it. 2. If you have a Magic Jack Plus or newer, you can use it with or without a computer. You simply connect it to your modem with ethernet your set to not need a PC. It's great if you travel out of country too. Simply load the app on your cell phone or take the MJ with you. Lastly, I hooked my MJ into my home's POTS lines so it powers every jack in the house. It was as easy as disconnecting from the street and plugging the MJ into on of the phone jacks in the house. I used a splitter on this jack so I could still have a phone plugged into it too. The only downside to this is that if you plug in to many phones, the volume and quality gets week. You also want to use phones with electronic ringers with the ring volume on low as that can stress the MJ too. I've looked for a booster to remedy this, but have not found one. One work around is to use cordless phones as they are self powered.

@DisneyWizard 4 жыл бұрын
I utilize MagicJack for my OUTWATS. Similar to the OBI200, the MJ VOIP dongle doesn't require being connected to a computer anymore, but can be when traveling, for it also connects to Ethernet via Cat5, is powered by a mains wall wart on UPS and drives the phone connection which in my case is wired to the whole house on the second pair making it line two. Do remember to disconnect that pair from the MaBell copperloop at the junction box so MagicJack is not powering the phone poles all the way back to the central office - the MagicJack dongle has enough power to ring the house but not the world. I use the forwarding feature of MagicJack to send return calls to GoogleVoice to take advantage of each bonus feature. I enjoy getting texts of voice messages, record incoming call with a press of the 4 key and GV ringing a multitude of devices, mobile phones, laptops and tablets with Hangouts as well as TextNowk and the wired to the wall MaBell copper loop original to the house. I'm satisfied with the DSL bandwith - not saving any money there but I've appreciated the stability of that number since 1956. Other legacy devices work well such as DSL, Fax, Watson, answering service and 911. Being not interested in saving money, I considered 100% VOIP, but GoogleVoice refuses to forward to GoogleVoice, so this hybrid arrangement suits me fine and I find comfort in the stability and reliability wired to the wall copperloop MaBell and enjoyed internet and phone service during power outages as a UPS drives all my phone/internet equipment, but not the computers or TV - I'm good with laptop/tablet/mobile battery power. The plan was to charge the COMS UPS with solar, I have the gear, just not the yet the effort.

I generally agree with your statement about being super nice to the cable reps, that's usually my goal on those calls. I will say though that it just took 12 phone calls and 5 hours of my time to get my bill straightened out with Verizon, and it wasn't until I WASN'T nice (the dude called me a liar repeatedly even though I have all of the emails and dates to give him) that they actually seem to have it right. So...your mileage may vary.

Magic Jack stopped having to be tied to your computer back in 2013, maybe sooner, using direct wifi and a device dongle plugged directly into an electrical outlet with a phone jack for your base station. They had to change the data scheme to accommodate this so you could no longer use the older device. I had both.
