Liv was vile to Digby. Through their whole relationship however it did get to the point where I started to find him a bit pathetic

These guys are about as supportive as a piece of shit! The look on their faces when Liv said the relationship is continuing.......

What they are saying, doing and feeling does not match up here. Here's a breakdown of the conversation between Liv and Digby: Liv says she isn't feeling happy, she wants to be happy with Digby but isn't and feels guilty about it. Digby convinces her that she is unhappy because her friends are controlling her opinion of their relationship (as if she doesn't have her own mind and her feelings aren't relevant) - this is a blame tactic, to distance their relationship from being the problem. He phrases the questions in a way that are leading e.g. don't you want to be happy in an amazing relationship with me? as if this is what is actually happening or could happen. This is what she wants, but isn't what is happening because her feelings are telling her that it is not true. Digby in the space of a couple of minutes, has manipulated her and undermined her trust in her own perception and feelings about the relationship. Digby puts it in a way that suggests she is mistaken about her experience with him and that she is foolish to experience it differently from him. She wants to believe it. He has a look of contempt on his face as if judging the inferiority of her understanding and how it differs to him, (and potentially her attempts at asserting this or trying to leave the relationship) - this is a bad sign in a partner. So Liv's confusion is a conflict between knowing what it really going on (that she is unhappy and needs to leave) and Digby's version of reality that they have an amazing relationship, which is supposedly superior to hers and she needs to comply with (according to him). This is called cognitive dissonance, holding two conflicting beliefs at the same time and being confused about what is real. This is why she feels lost. He sounds reasonable on the surface, saying that he is open to her freedom and not wanting her to be with him if she is unhappy, but if he meant it he would have validated her feelings of unhappiness and her wish to move on by accepting it and agreeing to separate - rather than talking her round to what he wants. I'm not saying he is doing any of this on purpose or should take responsibility for all the problems, but he is subtle in what he is doing and Liv is struggling with his manipulation and what appears to be some level of emotional abuse. Good luck to these guys. It looks like things are resolved in the next episode anyway.
