Developing Double Stroke Rolls on the Drum Set

Күн бұрынHere is a video lesson on developing double stroke rolls on the drum set for fills and soloing. Using these techniques creates an illusion of speed with little energy expended when compared to using single strokes. For this lesson I use page 121 from my book Advanced Coordination for Drum Set and Hand Percussion for demonstration purposes.

I show you how to use this page by interpreting each 16th note as a 32nd stroke diddle resulting in a double stroke roll. I then apply this concept around the drums while filling in doubles with the bass drum.
The drums I am using for this video are 1990's Gretsch Catalina Elites
They feature a 16" Bass Drum, 12 and 14" toms and a 12" snare drum.
The Cymbals are a Paiste 16” Sound Creation Dark Flat ride, an 18” Paiste 1970's 602 medium flat Ride and an 18” re-mix Zildjian ride as well as 12” Zildjian re-mix hi hats.
The mics are 2 Sennheiser MKH 800 overheads and a Shure Beta 52 on the bass drum.

The volume of the click is representative of how low you have in your headphones?

More or less. It is not loud at all in my headphones.

Those hihat cymbals are they zildjian made, i had 12 inch sock or hihat dark zildjian that sounded different than those and using mine for jazz sounded great.

Yes, they are zildjian remix hats.

Hi Rick, working from your book now 😊, do you keep the right hand as the lead hand for each of the 4 16th note groupings? I guess it’s a good idea to do both right hand lead, and also alternate throughout.

Hi Andre You should practice leading with both hands. You can also play it with the hands in unison at a slower tempo.

Hi Rick, I was wondering if you have any good concept or exercises on how to intervene the hi-hat with foot within time feel/ groove or within soloing apart from keeping an ostinato?

Yes, with splashes, but you should practice this with as many hi hat patterns as possible.

What temperature do use to reduce the cymbals size.

Hi larr Put the dryer on the following settings: Delicate Wrinkle Care Optimal Dry You may want to throw in some fabric softener if the cymbal is a bright one. Hope this Helps RD

I put my cymbals in the dryer because you said they would shrink. Not only did they not shrink, but my dryer is now broken. Please send me bitcoin so that I can purchase a new dryer, otherwise I will be left to cry in the comments section

Hi Tim It sounds like you put too many in the dryer at once. I believe I said only one at a time. If you want to do a whole set I would suggest a laundromat with industrial strength machines. A good one is Sunshine Cleaners in Brooklyn. They have great pinball machines and a bar there as well. You should be able to fit at least a 22" in those machines. Last week I needed an opera gong so I put my chau gong in there and 1 hour later......good to go.

@@rickdior Hmm, ok I will try that, but something still sounds a little fishy, and I've got pretty good ear for this stuff. There's an old saying in Tennessee, I think in Texas, fool me once ,strike one, fool me again, strike three.
