Developing Left Hand Agility & Efficiency

Left hand technique on the violin (or any other stringed instrument) is made up of horizontal and vertical motions - shifting with the arm; sliding, lifting, and dropping the fingers. Many players learn the two types of motions isolated from one another - the lack of integration creates a roadblock in developing an agile, flexible left hand for quick virtuosic passages. Here is a progressive way to combine the vertical and horizontal motions into a more efficient left hand technique.
Concepts and exercises in this video are based on methods and teachings of great pedagogues including Simon Fischer, Ivan Timofeyevich Nazarov, Konstantin Mostras, and Abraham Yampolskiy.

Another great video! Very meticulous and rich in detail and guidance! I remember doing the "baby shifts" too! It looks effortless when you do it, but so much thought goes into executing a passage well. The same goes for any other instrument too, I believe. And this really drives home the importance of getting a good teacher. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, experience, and passion with us!

Great video! Thanks for the reminder to practice the shifts in tempo and not too slowly. That can really hang up a fast passage and affect accuracy. I'm looking forward to more videos on this subject. Thank you so much!!
