DEVELOPING MY DREAM GAME! - Monster Tribe Devlog 1

Pokemon meets Rogue-lite in this entirely new adventure I am developing.
Catch monsters, level up from battles, craft rare items, and explore vastly different landscapes in this monster catcher experience!
Monster Tower Cool Features:
- Turn-Based Position-Oriented Combat
- Randomly Generated Dungeons
- Collectible Monsters
- Rogue-lite Elements
- Leveling Up, Morphing, and Modifying Creatures
- Permanent Decision Making Choices For Unique World Building
As a kid I always wanted to create my own monster catcher game, so I came up with ideas of what it might be like for years...a decade went by and I am now ready to try my hand at doing it for real!

was here for the premiere! looks so dope. it seems like you’re being really ambitious with this project-definitely not something to knock, and I’m sure you already know this, but be sure to keep the scope manageable and finishable. i’d really love to see this project soar and finish development, and not end up in that unfinished game graveyard we all know too well :P cheers, i’ll be keeping up with development

I am SO happy I caught the premier for this video, I am impossibly excited for this game! All the concepts sound wonderful in themselves, but this especially feels like a game that will satisfy that itch Pokemon just can't scratch anymore. It's one of my favourite game series, but I haven't touched any on the Switch and even the 3DS games had gotten pretty "press A to win" so this is SUPER interesting for me The battle system using backline and frontline kind of makes me thing of the Pokemon TCG where you were able to attack the opponent's bench at times. Likewise, the more dynamic battle system makes me think of Digimon Championship (which isn't very similar since you actually had no control over your monsters in battle) but just that seeing a battle system so new and refreshing can make an entire game feel that much more alive I can't wait to see how everything develops!

i like the feeling of where this is going , i love the proposed mechanics , but visually i think a bit of work could be done ; the look and layout of the UI are wonderful , but the monsters really don't fit in all that well , it seems that there isn't a cohesive design philosophy behind them from what we've been shown and they really clash with each other in a way that is a little too varied without justification ; making them uncomfortable to look at . (this is all based off of the battle scene) all in all , i like the ambition that's going into this project and it looks like you have a good plan of what you want to improve upon mechanically within the genre .

Ok wow im super excited for this. One suggestion I have is to put the Heath bars of the characters above their sprites instead of in the corner. When it's small and in the corner its hard to tell which health bar goes to which monster (and yes I know that was concept art so it probably won't look like that in the end)

Hahaha yeah, I know what you mean. I am probably going to keep it as it is there (something similar but Bette of course) and do a cool glowing highlight when you select / hover over a creature to tell whos health is it 😉(also I will add proper profiles for each monster :P)

You should definitely consider adding some texture to the grass in the main overworld area you showed. The gameplay sounds absolutely amazing though! I’m sure the graphics are just going to increase with time, great job mate :)

I love the Jack Vance fusion of Science Fiction and Fantasy elements to develop a world. While the works of Jack Vance often inspire grim visions of a future where Humanity is wasted and is approaching heat death rapidly, it does frequently feature moments of beauty and culture that bring forth reflection on the ruin. Darkest Dungeon is similar in many regards, the dungeon is dangerous and stressful but the town is comfortable and quiet. Perhaps as you descend into the depths below the town, the color become more drab, the highlights more saturated, and all values darker. But even in those forgotten ruins lies little calm spots, abandoned lounges from some older age, a garden left with only a few small flowers by a shattered fountain. Another inspiration I'd tap into would be the first Diablo for a top down 3D dungeon crawler. Reguardless, love the look, can't wait to see more.

What i want, is an actual background sprite for environment. The flat gradient color background looks nice in some places, but i feel like a sprite, or maybe even, a 3D extra environment would add a lot more flare to battles.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, it's just a mock up sketch, so nothing is final, but we want to a lot of movement into the scene with floating particles coming from the bottom of the screen, etc for a techno, cyber feel. The gradient will probably be reworked to look more glowy and moving, etc. A lot to work on, but it's just a concept 😉🔥

Weather actually does affect the battles in Pokémon, say for example a drought boosts fire damage and weakens water damage, and vice versa for rain

I'm terrible at game development but I am good at sprite creation. One thing I pick after the first few pieces of art is if I want outlines on anything. After that I repeal the current sprites accordingly and check every sprite over and over to make sure that one water drop cannot escape with any errors.

I really like how the development is going! From what I saw of the combat, I'm guessing the purpose of the positioning of your monsters is linked to the attacks? To me it looks like the grid next to the attack shows you how your attack will hit with the solid red square being the selected monster to hit and hollow red squares being the area of effect/splash damaged. Sort of like playing with Tetris pieces where you need to use the right shapes in the right situation, but now including the added combat, element, and effect factors. As for the sprites and the world they all looked very very nice! I am wondering though if you'll keep the overworld 3D while battles are 2D or if you'll eventually change the battles into 3D as well? All around I think you guys really have something good going here and I can't wait to see more!

Do you take criticism because if you do everything so it’s really cool at all it’s just that the 3d Sprites is kind of nauseating when you turn them around so if you could fix them Well anyway that’s all the criticism that I have so good luck with the game!

You should make it so that you have to give your monsters gifts so they stay happy and if they become sad they will suffer debufs like -10% attack damage

This is an interesting idea, but it might be insanely over complex when controlling 4 monsters at all times haha, we will have to see if this fits into the playstyle of the game

It's really stunning what you have managed to do during such a short time, but I'm not sure, is the combat system working thing, or the showcase was just concept art? Also, I think the player sprite doesn't really suit the overall art style, will you change it someday? Btw keep up good work :-)

We will be trying something out for this, yes hahaha (for sure split screen vs mode, which means at the very least you could use something like Steam Play Together to play with friends online)

Dude, pokemon weather effect does affect the battle, it changes stats, power of attacks, activate abilities, etc. Anyways, the game looks interesting, hope to see more.

The art/sprite technique is really cool! *I think to make it different than pokemon*have the player character fight along side the monsters. I hate pokemon cuz the player just sends their pet to fight alone and get hurt, but the player just stands back with no consequences.
