I have been shooting iron sights for about 40 years (I'm older than 40) and have been professionally carrying a handgun for 32 years. Age has brought me to utilizing a red dot on a pistol. Your instruction has been incredible!!! My transition to the red dot has been exciting and rewarding! Thank you VERY much!!

I'd say I was a relatively early adopter of the pistol/rmr. The older people that I let try mine end up getting one on theirs because it helps them shoot better (aging eyes). My dad was astounded I put that much money into mine. Let him shoot it. Couple months later, he got one...and now his friends are all getting them.

Just what I needed. Been struggling. Just got me a Hellcat with a sig romeo. Time to go buy another box of ammo to do it right. I was told to sight it in on my iron sight. Very well explained.

I have thirty years on iron sights and I just shot fifty rounds with the dot. I am terribly slow finding the dot but I can already tell that if I will continue to practice the dot is by far the better system. I must add, I am now 72 years of age and had to use my bifocals to use the iron sights . I could keep the front sight in focus everything else was fussy but I could still hit targets out to 25 with consistency but beyond that I may as well of thrown the gun at the target. The dot is in focus without using my bifocals and therefore the target is in focus. This alone makes whatever practice I need to be well worth the perceived outcome. Your training is extremely beneficial. Thank you.

Here we are on a 6yr old video at the time I'm watching. I'm at 269rnds experience with my Holosun 507C, so total noob. Your videos and explanations mean I basically had no "transition" or learning period when I took on the RDS world. Zeroed to 25M on day one, and I'm nearly up to my proficiency that I can do with irons. I shoot at an expert marksman level with irons, and good to excellent speed. For now I'm still a little on the slow side with the RDS, but picking it up fast. Just knowing that I don't have to worry about "alignment" was an easy one to ignore when I made my first 100rnds of draw-to-fire reps go really well. These videos and your excellent explanations are the gold standard by which all RDS training and tips are judged. Even top level instructors all point to your work, so clearly you're doing things right. Cheers 🔥

Finally! An intelligent articulate presentation on optics that doesn’t condescend to tell me how a gun works. Kudos to you sir.

I find that the thumb on my support hand (left) REALLY helps me with acquiring sight of the dot. When I focus on pointing that thumb toward the target, I'm using my body to naturally line up the barrel with the target, and so the dot shows up more consistently since the gun is fairly well aligned already. My support thumb is being used as a natural indexing point for aiming. It makes sure I don't push the gun/dot too far left. I'm a little surprised that I haven't heard this tip before anywhere; I had to figure it out on my own. Trainers I've seen tend to just say "practice over and over" and refer to natural hand-eye coordination rather than something specifically helpful potentially. Though maybe I'm missing something; I'm no expert.

Such an excellent, in depth explanation! I know this is from 2016 but I wish I had seen it before this. Big learning curve when a really knowledgeable instructor can impart that knowledge succinctly. I've seen a couple of your videos before but this one just made me an instant subscriber! Kudos!

Hello Aaron, I added a Canik TP9 SFX (which BTY is optic ready) to my arsenal a month ago. Today I have a Vortex Venom 6-MOA being delivered to mount on the Canik. This is my first red dot optic so I have really been busy trying to learn everything that I can from professionals like yourself on KZfaq that offers helpful instructions so I will have a plan in place to start using and learning how to use a red dot optic site proficiently from a students view. Wow! Excellent verbal presentation. I'm almost 60. I shot on the Marine Corps rifle and pistol teams. So iron sight are dear to my heart. But as all old people begin to have problems with multiple focal point, Im thigh deep in that club. I've shot quite a few of my friends and families handguns with the red dots. 10 years ago I would have argued with you about them being the future. Well, now Im on board. While I don't usually listen to young men like yourself speak to me about guns and aiming in particular. I had been listening to your schpeel for a few minutes when I realized the words coming out of your mouth sounded like me giving instruction to a real shooter. Excellent information!! I have shot irons for years. I used to be pretty decent. Decent enough that when I did a weekend session with a group taught by a well seasoned and battle tested 27 year veteran Green Beret turned defense contractor after 20 years. Was well impressed that I shot my side arm as well as he did. ( I am also prior service but not an operator). However as my eyes have aged… So I’m going to make the leap and see how it goes with one on a canik, one in a CZ and one in a staccato and see how it plays out.

I also had the same challenge of learning to switch from quickly focusing on the front iron sight, to quickly focusing on the target and bringing the dot on to it. You articulated it perfectly. Great video!

Man thanks, I just bought a canik tp9sfx last week with a vortex viper red dot. This is my first hand gun, and I went to zero it yesterday. Everything I went through and experienced yesterday zeroing the red dot you went over in this video. Got to love youtube. Very well done Aaron. I've been shooting since the 70's, teaching since the 80's so I have lots of time on iron sights. I'm just moving to a red dot because I can no longer focus on the front sight without tipping my head back and looking through the bottom of my glasses lens. Yeah, that really instills fear in your threat. I've been getting some tips from the younger guys at the shop but your explanation is the best by far. I'll book mark this video and come back to it as I push on with this new skill set. Thanks again.

This is my go to video, whether is be i spend a long time away from the range or have a bad shooting day I always come back to pick up on something I forgot/missed.

What brings you back on target is muscle memory. It amazes me on a double tap how close my second shot can be to my first shot. At times, I have had the second shot almost seem to have interred the same hole as the first shot made. As the bullet moves down the barrel, the rifling cause it to spin, as this happens torque is created causing the gun to twist and pressure creates muzzle flip. Depending on the on which way direction the rifling is cut will determine which way the gun will twist. This is a shorted description of all that happens. What you need to understand it not just the muzzle flip that occurs, the gun twist also. The gun barrel does not only move up and down. Practicing trains your muscle memory to bring you back in line with your target. Some call it instinctive shooting, intuitive shooting or practical shooting. I call it fun. I am old school, but thinking about putting a red dot on my gun for cancelled carry. Great instructions, thanks.

Just built myself a Glock with an rmr. Started with a stripped frame, mostly stock parts, aftermarket connector and a KE arms bravo slide cut for a trijicon rmr. I can't wait to get good with that gun. I appreciate the information going into training with this new platform

If the off chance you answer this question, I’m going to ask it anyways. I’ve been shooting pistols since I was 5 years old, about 32 years now. (I live in the desert) when I start isolate, diagnose my abilities, I’m “okay” with irons and or dots…. Under stress, timer, I’m better off “instinctively shooting” I’m threat focused and really not even looking at the gun and still punching what I want to punch. However I’ve probably been through about 5K rounds “breaking” that habit and working on proper presentation and having everything in line, still threat focused. Started ranting 😅 anyways I suck at proper presentation drills, so I find myself going back to point and shoot. I guess my question is, which I kinda figured your answer would be, I feel like I need to proficient in both manners of abilities, should the need ever arise. Your totally on point with everything your saying. We don’t need irons RDS, I feel like they are there for fine tuned shot. Great vids keep ‘em coming.

I'm still pretty much brand new to dots on pistols, trying to keep the training mantra in my head; slow is smooth, smooth is fast, teaching my son the same thing. Get it right, then get it fast. And getting my grip consistent is my biggest hurdle at the moment, so I can get my dot right where I want it during presentation. Your videos are surprisingly helpful with the way you explain it, no offense, it's just hard for me to learn something physical from watching a video, but the way you break it all down makes a lot of sense, so thanks!

I just got my first handgun with RDS and I've not gotten much time with it and out enough rounds down range but it's been kinda weird dry firing with acquiring the dot. I've been focusing more of the dot instead of the target. I'm definitely going to be trying everything you showed in the video
