The DIKW Pyramid is beneficial for data analysts to understand as it is used to explain the development of human understanding from data. Understanding can be used to frame the application of different data analytics techniques including descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive analytics.
The DIKW Pyramid is also an example of a simple model that can be used to introduce the concept of models to future data analysts prior to introducing data models.

I really like what you did here. The overlay of Past/Future is brilliant. I am an engineer, not a philosopher but I have been a fan of DIKW since grad school way back in the late 1980s. My graduate advisor, Dr John Michaels stated he believed that the model is incomplete and the TRUTH needs to be above wisdom. Truth is absolute and objective. Even by your definitions here, WISDOM is neither good or bad. If you are building an evil system, it is good to be evil. Good is not objective, it is situational and subjective. I like Dr. Michael's approach and realized that a PhD means a Doctor of Philosophy in that philosophy is the pursuit of truth, through the components of DIKW. Therefore all areas of study and all data ultimately yield truth. A single truth from all angles. I leave the definition of truth to the philosophers and theologians.

I wouldn't be so bold as to add truth to the model, but that is because my purpose for this model is different than a purely philosophical one. To explore truth in my explanation of the model, I think you would see a transition from objective (date end) to subjective (knowledge and wisdom). From that perspective, absolute truth cannot be objective, but rather an individual's absolute truth is predominantly subjective. It must be subjective unless each stakeholder's truth is honestly shared with other stakeholders such that there is a shared and mutual truth.

Steve, yes. We can part ways here if you like. We are all entitled to our own opinions. But opinions aren't truth. I don't see knowledge and wisdom as subjective. I see them as small breadcrumbs along the way to a bigger truth. String Theory in physics points to much larger truths if all of the data points in the same direction. We can part ways on the concept of "individual's absolute truth" if you like. I see absolute truth, like gravity as being irrefutable. I always like to invite a person to step off a 14th story building if they don't believe in gravity. Regardless, I love the work you did here. Well done!

@@NewfieMaster LOL! You are most certainly entitled to your opinion, and I respect that. But the concept of relative truth, as suggested by Post Modern teaching has one huge problem. Consider the Nazis. They truly believed in "their truth." They were 100% committed to their truth. Millions of them. They were sincerely dedicated to "their truth." Millions died as a result. Yet, history has stated that "their truth" was wrong. Really? Based on what standard? If there is a standard, than it is no longer subjective. I am not a philosopher, I am an engineer. Every day I see Big Data, collections of raw observations correlating to contextual Information and so on, pointing to single wisdom and truth, not many. The top of the pyramid is small for a reason, the Data is distilled into nuggets of Wisdom. And as you have so rightly suggested, Wisdom is the future, predicting. I will end here. So even if we disagree, disagreement is not disrespect. I love the work you did here. Thank you!

@@curtvincent3728 Thanks Curt. I do believe in an absolute truth from a philosophical perspective so I don't think we actually disagree too much. I just think as humans we will forever struggle to recognize what it is. I appreciate the comments. I didn't think a presentation on the DIKW pyramid would head in this direction. I always enjoy a good philosophical discussion. :p

@@NewfieMaster Disagreement is not disrespect. Everyone should debate as it helps distill data into information which should be processed and validated, not just accepted. I sincerely like how you described it all. I can't debate philosophically, I am not qualified. I can just ask question to get the both of us to think. Thinking is becoming a lost art. Again, thanks for producing this.
