Devin Vassell was simply sensational for the San Antonio Spurs this past season: second on the team in scoring with a career-best 18.5 points per game on 43.9% from the field, 38.7% from 3 (on 7.0 attempts per game), and 78.0% from the line. Not bad for a player who had a career best usage Cleaning the Glass.
Vassell’s increased versatility is what impresses. He came into the league as a 3&D player but has evolved into more of a three level scorer. Devin is money from the midrange, shooting 42% on high volume (he ranks in the 87th percentile for wings in terms of shooting frequency from middies). He attempts a lot from the long mid (in the 98th percentile for wings) and he cashes out at 47%. His contemporaries at converting from shots outside 14 feet at that clip are Austin Reaves, Jaylen Brown, Michael Porter Jr, Cade Cunningham, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Huerter, and DeMar DeRozan.
He reminds some of the midrange maestros that have donned the silver and black before him. Zach Lowe wrote in a 10 things column from late March:
“Vassell has hit only 21 of 75 pull-up 3s, but he's comfortable jacking 2s on the pick-and-roll. Vassell has tripled his pick-and-roll volume this season, per Second Spectrum. The Spurs have scored 1.05 points per possession when Vassell shoots after using a ball screen or whips it to a teammate who launches -- 46th among 207 players who have run at least 100 such plays, per Second Spectrum. Given San Antonio's ad hoc roster, that number is massively encouraging.”
All clips are from the 22/23 season

Can hardly imagine what's gonna happen next season with Wemby's screen !!

He relies so much on creating and looking for space. If he somehow applies the shot fake the way Demar does, his midrange game would be a lot deadlier.

Man... this guy is so creative in order to create his own shots in different spots, playing fundamentals also. He's definitely a steal of the draft. Devin will be better than Haliburton, mark my words. GSG!

@@Leo-nc3yx I'm another Spurs fan and I like both guys. Haliburton just got 0 points recently tying with Sochan. His special ability is his playmaking. Devin's been scoring and a decent playmaker for Wemby. He had 5,9,6,5,3,7,6,6,4 assists in order from recent games while scoring decently as well. With the Spurs system, everyone is passing the ball. Now the young guys seem to be working together under Pop's system. I haven't seen this team pass well like this for years. Although I would still like them to get a point guard in the draft, I think they should go after the best talent available even if it isn't a pg. Hell, 10 years ago, pg-c players were all passing like a point guard in the Spurs. Kawhi, Ginobili, Duncan, Splitter, Diaw, Green. We could use Haliburton, but we don't need him. We do need help, but I think we should find that in the draft. After all, our big 3 was originally obtained this way

@@humble378what are you talking about Vassell get more credit and attention that Keldon does even tho Keldon was more reliable then Vassell this no shade towards Devin since he had a mid season surgery. Most people put aside Keldon stats since they believe he only scored cuz he had the ball in his hands which makes no sense because Shai quite literally did the same in the beginning of his career
@arturoramirez883
@arturoramirez883 9 ай бұрын
And I compare Keldon to shai cuz they both have VERY similar finishing percentages near the rim and both struggled on defense when their teams were tanking not to mention they were the same agr

Just incredibly smooth in the midrange. If he can get to the line more often and improve his finishing, Devin is about as complete as a scorer could be.
