This isn't a song about him being unfaithful in his relationship. When he says "While my mistress she calls me, to stand in her spotlight again." He's talking about being a performer on the road. His mistress is his career, because it takes him away from the one he loves. Also, the bed of nails is a euphemism for being on the road, and sleeping in strang beds. It feels like a bed of nails compared to home. Lastly, when he says "tonight, I won't be alone, but know that don't mean I'm not lonely". He's simply saying that he'll be surrounded by people, the audience, band members etc but, he still longs to be with his wife, and he's lonely because she isn't there. The verse regarding his mistress calls him to stand in her spot light again.. he’s referring to performing and the stage/ fans waiting- that tour life.. “I’ll be there for you” is another beautiful must of his! Play that for the wife- “Never say goodbye “...another great one- 🧡🤎🤍👍✌️✨

I see others filled you in on the metaphors he is using in this song. And yes, he has known his wife and high school sweetheart for 40 years and they've been married for 32 years. He's is an incredible person and philanthropist who has organizations to help the homeless, children, education, and vets, to name a few. His wife is one lucky woman!

Musically, Jon’s voice is out there big time! He hit some notes that a lot of people aren’t able to do. That song just pierces my body whenever he hits those high notes.

The song is not about "cheating". it's about his love of the live on the road - his career is the 'mistress' He wont be alone - he has his band mates and his fans - and yet he's still lonely. Jon Bon Jovi married his high school sweetheart - and they're still 100% devoted to each other and still together - a rarity in rock music world and celebrity world. two more killer ballads by this band: I'll be There For You Romeo Is Bleeding

You can't discuss this song witout mentioning Jon's cowriter, lead guitarist Richie Sambora. Their harmonies are a thing of beauty; the music wouldn't be anywhere nesr as good without Richie's beautiful voice and musicianship. It was a huge personal blow to Jon when Richie had to leave the band to be with his daughter Ava when her mother descended into the hell of addiction. Jon has been with wife Dorothea since they were kids and has not led your tyical rock superstar life because the contracts are with him personally (i.e. the band are his "employees") and has taken carrying tht burden seriously from his early 20. Truly an exemplary human being.

I agree with your comments for the most part. I think you misunderstood the line "tonight I wont be alone but that don't mean I'm not lonely". He is talking about his "mistress" Music, and performing in front of so many people ie not alone, but he is still lonely without the woman he loves. Keep doing what you doing Devin. You rock !

The song is not being about unfaithfulness. His mistress is the stage and music industry. The blonde who refers to is a guitar. He wrote this song for his wife. Better now converts to all the struggles he'll go through provide her with a luxurious Life. They are still married BTW. They were high school sweethearts

HA!! He was literally writing a song to his wife with him being a rock artist on the road. The blonde in his bed was referring to his guitar. "A king's ransom in dimes, I'd give every night to see through this pay phone." He talks to her every night but of course back then before cell phones, you relied on pay phones. "Til the bird on the wire flies me back to you" referring to his private jet. The mistress who calls him to stand in her spotlight is literally the spotlight he stands in while singing. An absolutely gorgeous ballad from an absolutely badass rocker from the 80's!!

Pssst. Here's a little secret. Richie Sambora was the real superstar of the group. His backing vocals on this and Born to be my baby are phenomenal. You should check out Richie singing Living on a prayer I believe it was at a military benefit concert or I'll be there for you at msg. They're both great versions. Oh yea he's a pretty great guitar player too.

Superstar yes but he just isn't the front man JBJ is. John has crowds eating out of the palm of his hand, that's why they can still sell out stadiums 30+ years later. Richie is awesome but the reason his solo attempts never took off is he just isn't a great front man. Those two are magic together & neither are the same apart.

The song is about missing and wanting to be everything for your love. The"blonde" in his bed is his guitar hence the nightmares from playing songs all night while drinking because he's missing someone. Maybe or not just my take on it.
