Jun 25th, 2011. Devon Alexander "The Great" collided with Lucas Matthysse aka "La Máquina" in a Light Welterweight 10-rounder in the undercard of the Cornelius Bundrage vs. Sechew Powell main event in Saint Charles, Missouri.
Prefight records; Alexander 24(16)-1, Matthysse 28(26)-1.
Entering the fight, the 24 year old Alexander who was former IBF Light Welterweight & WBC Light Welterweight Champion had notable wins over Andriy Kotelnik, DeMarcus Corley, Juan Urango & Junior Witter while the 28 year old Matthysse had defeated top oppositions such as DeMarcus Corley & Vivian Harris.
Overall, it was a tremendous fight between a slick counter puncher and a power puncher.
In round 1, both set a ferocious pace and dispensed at a high output which they maintained through most of the bout.
In round 4, Alexander was decked with a right hand 7 seconds after the opening bell sounded. It was the first time he tasted the canvas in 26 professional bouts.
In round 7, Alexander showed signs of fatigue due to consistent body punching and he was hurt a number of times by Matthysse who largely dominated the action in this round.
In round 8, Matthysse controlled the fight for the most part but Alexander had his occasional moments.
In round 9, Alexander came back strong by sticking and moving effectively against a fatigued Matthysse.
In the final round, both men rallied with everything they had left despite visibly burned out.
After 30 minutes of awesome action, Alexander was awarded an SD10 with scores of 96-93, 95-94 & 93-96.
Some felt that Alexander received the benefit of a hometown decision as they thought Matthysse deserved the nod based off the strength of his knockdown in round 4.
Personally, I scored it 95-94 for La Máquina but I believe it could have gone either way.
