I'm not sure where J. Dillard got those numbers, though I can see how he might have confused Bearcats and Corsairs while filming. Currently there are around 30-35 Corsairs airworthy in the US, with 26 that regularly tour and are trackable via flight aware. There are also 3 in Europe, 1 in England, 2 in Australia, and 1 in New Zealand. Devotion used 4 for all of the filming. Bureau Numbers 133722 (1952 F4U-7 "211), 17799 (1943 F4U-1 which is the oldest flying) and 97359 (F4U-4B "205" and a Korean War Vet) were used for the primary filming in Washington State. CAF Airbase Georgia's FG-1D "530" BU.No 92468 was used with the other 3 in carrier scenes and also flew the flyby at the end of the movie when they filmed in Georgia.

The -1 is 17799, a South Pacific combat Vet with air to air victories. She also flew in Baa Baa Black Sheep the TV show besides being rotated through VMF-214 in WWII. Breitling Ads, Disney Planes, you name it, thats the Corsair. The other two are prime for their roles. The one painted as 211 is 133722, a 1952 -7 flown and owned by the Erickson Collection. The other as 205 is 97359 and is a -4B which was repainted to its Korean War scheme after filming to Honor one of the men who flew it in Combat over North Korea. That man, "Obie" O'Brien flew the Military Aviation Museums FG-1D for years before being reunited with 359. They had a special for him at Oshkosh last year that is here on youtube. Couldn't have picked a better group to fly for this film.

When I first looked at the picture the first thing I noticed was that the prop was a 3 blade which would probably be of early WWII vintage. I thought that all the Korean War Corsairs were -4 and had 4 blade props?

Actually, there were 6 Corsairs in the filming of this movie. The same aerial team that did Top Gun Maverick, did the aerial filming for this movie. (Kevin Larosa and his cine-jet team), The corsairs used in the front of the formation were real and the ones in the rear of the formations were CGI. There are only 12 flyable corsairs in the world and they were able to get 6

I met Steve or should I say he met me at a local airshow in Sacramento. He pulled me from the crowd and gave me a 1 on 1 tour of 799. I didn't know who he was and what he did until after when I googled him. I have been a big fan since and try and say hi to him when I can.

My exact thoughts on the movie "Red Tails". I have the utmost respect and admiration for the real-life aviators who lived that history, but was terribly disappointed in the movie. Over-the-top melodramatic portrayals & so much CGI, it looked more like a graphic novel flick. Can't wait to see this one though. Looks like genuine efforts to make it right.

Just saw the movie & it exceeded my expectations. Nice to see several identifiable local landmarks appearing in the air to ground shots.

I can set aside my CGI complaints with Midway cause I was honestly taken aback by how accurate its portrayals of certain people and events.
