From a model railroader the secret to seafoam trees (per the Supertrees instructions) is a dilute matte medium soak (7:1 water:MM). It lends them a lot of suppleness and also allows you to reshape them a little bit if needed.

A good tip for making bendable vines for hanging from tree branches: coat lengths of cotton, jute, or butchers twine with brown silicone and then roll in loose coco coir til covered. Let dry completely and wear gloves bc its very messy! I think they make perfect wild grape vines. I've made many backgrounds for reptile tanks using this and they hold up very well

What cute little trees! That's always the problem, with gaming trees; real trees are often around 100' (30.5m) tall. In D&D terms, that's 20" (51cm) tall. Whilst gaming, we'd not be able to see anything on the table. That said, yours are very majestic, and look rad as heck. Super nice

Yeah I agree, but that's usually the case, we often need to compromise between scale, functionality and visual aesthetic. Thanks for the nice comment! 👍

Top notch trees! The foil layer is really smart, nice touch using that!! For a substitute instead of the sea foam trees. I have been using rope twine basicly making trees from that but of much smaller scale (mostly aspen type trees) but it may work in a pinch if your running low on those.

Lovely. And very enjoyable video to watch. The end result looks a lot like an oak! I think some minor improvements could be to have one or two smaller dead parts of the tree (like a dead branch), since old oaks will often have those. And then it would also make sense to have an (or a couple of) old dead branch(es) that at some point came off be lying on the ground. Not that it has to be super realistic like that. But that is the image that comes to my mind when thinking about old oaks. In any case, very pretty trees.

Awesome! Now these are the trees I've been looking for. Big and majestic. One thing, I saw another guy cut up a green scotch pad to use as a base for the leaves and he then covered it with the green turf. That would probably be sturdier and not as fragile as the seafoam trees. Might give it a try sometime. But great trees and great video!

I picked up a realistic tree kit years ago which contained the seafoam tree armatures and they suggested you soak them in matte medium to strengthen them. The kit was more for use on a model railroad terrain sets, but you could probably do the same thing for gaming terrain.

This gave me tons of great inspiration! It shouldn’t be too hard to make the leafy branch’s modular... like swap them with ‘dead’ branches Idk.
@DevsDice
@DevsDice 3 жыл бұрын
That could be done yeah, I guess magnets could easily enough be used as long as the connecting branches have a similar dimension? :D
@justonsvoid

@@DevsDice what about a socket that the ‘live or dead’ branches slide into
@DevsDice
@DevsDice 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I suppose that could work as well. I guess it all depends on how much control one had of the dimensions. But for instance on the "off-shoot" branch, that kind of would give the modular branch a "lip" to slide into?
@justonsvoid
@justonsvoid 3 жыл бұрын
@@DevsDice okay so imagine that the off shoot branch has a male end... tooth pick that will slide into a small coffee straw... the main branch of the tree. When there is no off shoot it would just look like hollowed out dead branch of the main tree. But when you plug in the off shoot you could easily camouflage the joint with moss or whatever you like. Make sense? Wordy words aren’t my friend

Thank you Anecron1! I actually tend to agree a bit, I would have wanted the same area covered but exactly like you say it might be laid on too thick here and there. Good feedback! Will try to remember that if I do some more in the future! 👍

@@DevsDice I understand why you say the moss is a bit thick, but it looks very much like the trees where I live in the Pacific Northwest of the US, which are literally covered in moss :) Edit for clarity.

Hey Grigør Pyrok! Yeah as a base I would add it to the end but that being said. It depends. If you are looking into making really frozen, then I would potentially let it influence me in the painting stages i.e. introduce some blues and colder colors. But as a base, yeah snow flock at the end. 👍

@@DevsDice alright thank you very much! One last thing, in your other video about forest scatter terrain you use about 12-14 inches long aluminum wires to then twist in half and start modeling the trees... how long are they in this one to make it in that big of a scale? I was about to start making some terrain for my wargaming group and I will for sure use this vid as inspiration
@DevsDice
@DevsDice 3 жыл бұрын
I think the largest one ended up being something like 14-16 inches. That being said, it depends entirely how you use the length i.e. how many twists and turns you do. Hope that gives you some sort of direction! 👍

This is awesome. Just a thought from my 30 years of experience is that plaster is cheaper to fill out the trees instead of clay. It is much lighter to, not super heavy like clay.
