MILWAUKEE M18 RADIUS LED 2146-20: amzn.to/2TtnGBr
Currently, the DEWALT DCL074 is not on Amazon but can be found on many online retailers.
Both Milwaukee and DEWALT have been putting a ton of effort into jobsite lighting. Milwaukee seems to offer more lights overall and some with more options like the 2146-20 Compact Site light that is a hybrid light that can run from a battery or corded power. The Dewalt DCL074 is battery powered only. Both Milwaukee and DEWALT offer Apps that can control the lights and track them. So what is the main difference?
In our video, we go through the design, quality of construction and even do a drop test to see what one will break first. There is no doubt cost is higher on the Milwaukee as it has an MSRP of $349 and the DEWALT is $199. There are options on the Milwaukee that would justify some of the cost difference. Our quick search on Amazon showed the Milwaukee light selling for $240 shipped.
MILWAUKEE M18 RADIUS LED 2146-20 amzn.to/2TtnGBr
Currently, the DEWALT DCL074 is not on Amazon but can be found on many online retailers.
We will not spoil the video, but we never expected one of the lights to make it through our testing. We can be a bit tough on the tools and it might surprise you as to what happens. Drop tests can do a lot of damage you would never expect.
Lighting wise, we show the differences between the two in the video with some shop lighting and quick frame comparisons. The design of the lights has a lot to do with the area of the light output.
We would love to hear what you think! Leave a comment for us!

Even if the Milwaukee did not break, I would never pay that much for a work light. The price on the dewalt is hard enough to swallow. The exact same Milwaukee in Canada is $449.00 at Home Depot tool only.

Purchased 2 Dewalt lights a month ago. I am using them in my new 30' X 70' X 16' metal building (workshop). No electric yet. I hung them from the truss rafter support bar about 18' up a quarter of the way from the front and back of building. They light up the whole building , no problem. I installed pulley and rope to lower them and I am all set. Using 9 amp batteries in them. Perfect solution until I wire the building for permanent lights. Love the tool connect app although it is a bit temperamental at times. Dewalt ROCKS!

Miluakee and DeWalt both make some great tools. It is rare for the one brand to be significantly better than the other in any specific type of tool. Personally I feel like miluakee is generally built slightly tougher while DeWalt is built slightly more user friendly. I chose the DeWalt line because 1. It is generally a better value. Just more bang for your buck and easier to get good deals. ( My last DeWalt purchase at d and b supply I got a really nice $200 dewalt/Cordova cooler for free AFTER getting a really good deal on some DeWalt tools)2. They employ more American workers and at least some of their tools are built in USA (with globally sourced materials). 3. DeWalt seems to have a broader selection of tools (sometimes of varying levels of quality). If dewalt was unavailable I would gladly use the miluakee line. I have thousands of dollars worth of DeWalt 20v tools btw and have yet to break or have a malfunction so while I believe generally miluakee is built a little tougher, the topend DeWalt tools are plenty tough for my use/abuse in a farm environment.

Have the Milwaukee 2146-20 and gives a ton of light. The mobile app control is cool. However, not happy that it drains the M18 battery while the light is off because of the One-Key bluetooth radio broadcasting all the time. I haven't figured out how to turn off the One-Key bluetooth radio by default. Nothing in the manual. Nothing in the app. Any suggestions appreciated. Are people just removing the battery every time they turn these things off?

Love both companies. Both could use more RD testing. Hybrid for any high powered light is a must. Milwaukee has made a few tools that wont fit a HD 9 or HO 12. Dewalt set the stage for these large bats and tools . The new mil supercharger has filled a huge void in speed.

I dont believe you mentioned the bluetooth feature on the Dewalt... like you my tool arsenal is mostly comprised of Milwaukee cordless tools. Recently I needed a work light but I hapowned to be in Lowes. Saw the Dewalt for a reasonable price... 5000 lumens... never noticed the bluetooth feature until I went to use the light. You can control the light (off/on) from your phone or manually. You can even go on the Dewalt app and schedule your light to turn on/off handsfree just by entering information on the Dewalt calendar app - that's the game changer.... Jeff

I have 2 of the Milwaukee lights absolutely love them they are “practically indestructible.” Price wise, come on guys, how often does anybody pay full retail, that being said I found one of my lights on the clearance rack of Home Depot for $150 the other online brand new still in box for $200(one key model) every where I go (fishing,camping,job site,hunting,) people are flat amazed by this light and several friends and family have gotten these lights as well . All I can say is once you have one the price goes out the window and is replaced with total shock and amazement every time you turn it on and use it, I promise you won’t ever be disappointed, but trying to compare this with any other standard job site light on the market....just don’t, you have no clue how awesome this light is till you get one. I want to CAUTION anyone if you are going get one of these make sure you get the right size Milwaukee makes what I call a “BIG BOTHER” and a “LITTLE brother” so do your home work make sure your getting the one you want. On a side note I’ve dropped mine multiple times and once over 30ft+ no problems. I think these guys just hit the perfect Achilles hill on this light, if I recall on the other video they were testing this light they dropped the same light multiple times with no issues, but on the bright side Milwaukee warranty is amazing that’s why I invested in this brand.

@@WorkshopAddict Maybe should have held onto each by the rafter hook. Still - there's no question that the exposed battery on the Milwaukee is probably the weak point when dropped onto a hard surface. After all, even if both were dropped by holding the hook, each can and will rotate during the fall so the impact point will be unpredictable.

I'm impartial but I did notice the Milwaukee was abused during prior testing as well had been used a lot for camping prior to this test. The previous wear & tear placed on the Milwaukee may have been a factor when being compared to the brand new DeWalt. Then again it could be a legit shortcoming on the Milwaukee, I do like the stringer feature of the Milwaukee while liking the tripod mount option of the DeWalt.

The fact the the DeWalt is weighted to the bottom, so the cage and the enclosed battery helped it on the test. I'm a Milwaukee guy, but I have to say that roll cage is a great idea for a few reasons. I think I do need to point out that to of been a fair test is that the Dewalt was dropped by the rafter hook (Upside down) Just like it would be within a hanging from the ceiling scenario. Why wasn't the Milwaukee dropped the same way, to be fair? I'm sure this factor would fall into quite a bit of the way the tool/light is designed/shaped and materials used for where. I bet that defuser can take a lot more of a beating... Thoughts??? Edit: Also at the beginning of your video when you were showing how good each of the light a certain area, and I was paying attention to where the Dewalt's light output was starting to really lower (To the far left and the right) and when the Milwaukee light went on, I believe it killed the Dewalt for lighting circumference and distance. Thoughts???

It doesn’t cover their screws over torqued at the factory and the causing lenses to crack all over. They suck on honoring the warranty. My light Sat in a bed room for about a year. Cracks appeared and Milwaukee didn’t give AF well inside warranty and never dropped or used on a job site. Just a few times in a garage on a table. Ridiculous. The only credit I’ll give them is they updated the base to fit the M18 12.0 battery when I shipped the light in for warranty.

WoW! That was a surprise. Milwaukee needs to reinforce the battery holders or make the battery holder move around with springs to absorb the impact in a fall. That Milwaukee fell right on the top which was the worst possible place to hit, all the weight of the battery had downward force on the battery hold down. This was like Mike Tyson loosing to Buster Douglas. Lol. Still a huge Milwaukee fan though!

Hi Brian and Jeff, shopping for new more powerful work light, thus late comment. It doesn’t really matter which way Jeff dropped it, IMO, but it brings up ONE Important fact: these work lights should all be designed with a “roll cage,” or similar, around the LED head, and the whole body for that matter. This is clearly what helped the DeWalt survive your drop tests! And they all should feature a plug in option, especially for the price of these higher end lights. I like the Milwaukee, but have to pass. Looking at the new M18 Gen. 2 model 2366, I believe. More power and more runtime, but it looks like less protection around the light? Makita makes a 3000 lumen light, DML 811, (?) with plug in capability, that looks real rugged, with aluminum rails and all. It may be a floor light only, not sure? Great video just the same. Miss the ‘back and forth’ you had with Jeff. Stay safe and Healthy! 👍👍👍👍👍😁✌🏻🔦🇺🇸

Hard to argue for or against hybrid with lights at those price points.

If its going to break, its going to break. But one thing id like to piont out is how the lights were dropped. (And i know that they could fall any way they want) But Milwaukee wouldnt of been drop from that end in the battery changing scenario. Both lights were dropped in different orientations.

Agreed, we messed up. Funny thing is the Milwaukee broke when it hit the lens, not the bottom.

Not sure where I read it or heard it but i think the dewalt is also water resistant so it can sit outside in the rain with no problem. not sure about the milwaukee with the open battery location. It does not say anything on Dewalt webpage but maybee it was on a comercial clipp from Dewalt I heard about the ip54 rating. Not sure though. The option to have the cord is nice on the milwaukee, must agree but they seem to pricey for me to have like 5 to 10 of this corded together. I do not think that that is the target for any of these two and honestly, the battery works up to 11 hours on the dewalt on the lower setting so I do not think you have to change battery all the time. I can not see the problem. The only problem I see is if you have like 10 of these and you must change the battery but then again, I have a hard time to think that none of these lights is cheap enough to have like hundreds of them on a construction site.

The Dewalt has a lot of spaces to let air in for cooling. The water test was next, but after one broke it was pointless.

Milwaukee would be the best light if they built a cage around it. Milwaukee engineers get to work on doing that and also reduce the weight.

I like the extension cord on the Milwaukee also, but I find that the build quality on Milwaukee isn't as good as DeWalt. In my experience using both platforms, the DeWalts tend to hold up better than Milwaukee.
@mikeerin5031

Honestly, it's kind of an unrealistic test. The Milwaukee would not be required to take down to change the battery. Not sure about the DeWalt. I am more impressed by the Milwaukee being able to raise your tractor and not get crushed than the drop test. Both would be great for camping use for sure, but Milwaukee has that cord option which I like. I'm not biased, my tool collection includes, red/black, yellow/black and blue-ish green with loads of batteries for all of them. I do like the roll cage on the Dewalt though. That is a nice feature, but makes the until overall larger I think.

Send the milwaukee into your local Milwaukee service center and they will retrofit it to fit the 12.0 battery for free!

Milwaukee changed the housing last year to accommodate the 12ah battery. And they will upgrade older models for free, like yours, even if out of warranty. But I guess you have other problems with it now...

I’ve always said Dewalt tools are much tougher than Milwaukee tools. Milwaukee is great when well taken care of. Dewalt while not focusing on ousting the competition in specs, is designed for tough environments and usage. Side note, Dewalt was dropped from hanging from the bottom. Milwaukee was dropped from hanging from the top. Anyways good review guys.
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, they were in different positions when dropped. That is because the DEWALT is easier to hang on to with the cage and the Milwaukee was heavy and the handle was on top. We should have used the rafter hook.
@RaymerRamos

MILWAUKEE should have been dropped hanging from the bottom as well which is where the rafter hook is anyways... and also to be consistent on the test! But great video as always.
