Very good point. I love major 7ths they are the dreamy beautiful chords. Other ones used in the 70s were the minor /7th played in repetition, although that one will always be a biggy in songwriting.

Growing up in Los Angeles in the 50s, 60s and 70s I spent a lot of time on Ventura Blvd and a lot of time on PCH driving from Santa Monica to Ventura and Oxnard. This song always brings back those memories of far better times. Some people don't like Venice in the snow. I remember when that painting was done and the demonstrations when they started construction of the building that blocked the view.

Yes! 'America' has definitely touched my life. -'Horse With No Name' was among the first 45s I HAD to have. - I saw them perform live at least once. Honestly... I can't remember how many times. LOL. - My cover band still plays 'Ventura Highway' and 'Tin Man'. - In my early 20s when I worked at a major music store in St. Louis ... Billy Peek came in to get some new gear. I had the opportunity to chat with him a bit. That was a thrill!

America is a great band with great creative music story tellers from the late 60s into the 70s where they started. As a former on air radio DJ? I can say that back in the late 70s? Then in the 90s working in the radio broadcasting industry ? I played almost every song they had out on Billboard charts. From their first hit? A horse with no name all the way into the 80s with ? You can do magic. Their acoustic guitar work is certainly timeless in the pop music arena no doubt. Thanks again to the three guys and their melodies in arrangements and great acoustic pop sound for their music that definitely is? Timeless.

Horse with no Name, reminds me of coming home from the Beach when I was 11. A sunny mid week day in august. The song started about a mile away from the house and it ended as we pulled in the driveway. Just put my playlist together other day of this legendary outfit. 10 or so...of the most 'memorable, palatable, emotion-stirring' melodies, ever recorded. whisked right back to childhood, and times that were just so carefree, innocent, and good. 1. Horse; 2. Ventura; 3. Tin Man; 4. Sister Golden Hair; 5. Lonely People; 6. I Need You; 7. Daisy Jane; 8. Can do Magic; 9. Sandman; 10. Only in your Heart - God..... just some of the best music from the 1970s.....

"I've been through the desert on a horse with no name. It felt good to be out of the rain." I know exactly how he felt. I once drove from Central Texas to LA (driving up to Albuquerque and then to LA Via I-40) and every mile through Arizona it was raining. Once I crossed into California, it suddenly stopped. On the way back through Arizona, it was once raining SO hard that I almost pulled in to stay at "a quiet, little motel tucked away off the main highway".

It’s ironic that he thought that Highway 1 was only a Highway that passed through Ventura and the song is Ventura Highway since when Highway 1 passes through Ventura it is joined with the Ventura Highway 101 and continues up the coast along the west side of California. He was singing about the Ventura Highway and didn’t realize it was the name of the Highway at the point where it goes through Ventura itself!🤔🐻

Not nearly as difficult as the bass line. I, long ago, gave up trying to play it correctly while trying to stay in meter. It's even more difficult when you try to sing the melody line and play the bass line at the same time. I'm sure some can do it perfectly, but I ain't one of 'em.

101 is the Ventura FREEWAY. By the way, this is the guy who wrote the song. So he knows what he's talking about when it comes to his inspiration for writing it.

Pacific Coast Highway is PCH or Hwy 1 which overlooks the Pacific ocean. Ventura Highway is also called the 101 Freeway which parallels PCH but is more inland.

There is NO Ventura Highway ("no such beast" at 01:55). Except in the song, which Dewey Bunnell clearly says was Inspired by Highway 1 (PCH). 101 is the Ventura Freeway, not Highway.

As a native Californian myself, I always thought of the Ventura Freeway as the Ventura Highway in this song. However, I've been on both the Pacific Coast Highway and The Ventura Freeway, also known as the 101. No disrespect to the 101, but I can't imagine that freeway inspiring this or any other song. The Pacific Coast Highway, alternately called PCH or Coast Highway by locals like myself (lived in Corona Del Mar/Newport Beach, Newport Coast, and Costa Mesa, for years; all of which are pretty damn close to the coast and Coast Highway), is beautiful enough if you drive north or south on it for any length of time that it is very easy to imagine Coast Highway inspiring a song as lovely as Ventura Highway. But lets be honest: Substitute Pacific Coast Highway or Coast Highway or god forbid PCH for Ventura Highway and it's a bit easier to see the need to artistically and lyrically call Coast Highway Ventura Highway. Pacific Coast Highway has six syllables for one thing, which makes it too long, and Coast Highway has only three syllables, rendering it too short. Ventura Highway clocks in at five syllables, which makes it fit much better within the framework and context of the song. And, as beautiful and inspiring as Coast Highway is? Calling it Ventura Highway just sounds prettier and more picturesque in this song. And if you think about it for a moment? Ventura Freeway would have the correct number of syllables as Ventura Highway (5) but come on, a highway sounds a lot more poetic any day of the week than any freeway in Southern California, home of two of the most heavily traveled freeways: the 405 and the 5. Neither of which inspires much more than frustration or aggravation getting stuck in gridlock on either or both. (And the 55, 91, and 22 freeways are equally as aggravating. Living in Prescott Arizona now and for the past five years, I miss none of those freeways.)

Great song. I dont think it ever snowed in ventura though. Or rained alligator lizards. I could be wrong though.

Janet Jackson sampled the guitar lick in it. In my view that's a compliment. But I still haven't seen any alligator lizards in the air.

Actually it’s a talentless ripoff, just like atomic kitten’s “be with you” ripping off the violin lick from ELO’s “last train to London” and many others. They are not remakes or cover versions which fully recognize and celebrate the original artists work and creativity, but solely ripoff their work and claim it for their own

@@larryhall2805 Gerry Beckley said in an interview that he didn't think Janet even knew of the song. It was the producers of her album Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam who he and Dewey knows, they were the ones that wanted to use the sample for Janet's song.
