The DFW Airtrans has rarely been documented on video. Even more rare/non-existent is video of the American Airlines branding of their portion of what surely was the most complex and sprawling Automated People Mover system anywhere. It is one of the earliest as well, and of a design that was never used again, save a trio of lines built later, in Japan. The Airtrans served the public until 2005 when a more conventional system superseded it. For context I left in what happened before and after my 1993 on the Traam.
As a preamble I included relevant scenes from a 1972 promo film for the airport. It was, coincidentally, uploaded by the airport authority just four days prior to my completion of this video (it was on Facebook but not KZfaq). The original, poorly labelled tape was in my closet as unknown forces drew me to it on a cold day in January 2024, stuck at home. Enjoy.

I remember the old DFW Airport very well. We used to ride the AA Traam a lot when I was a kid. I sure do miss it. This video brought back so many memories. Even hearing that chime brought back memories of the late 90s.

As someone born a few months before the Airtrans system closed (and who often flew out of DFW as a young child), I wish I had been born just a few years earlier so I could have gotten to experience it. It's a shame that the airport no longer has a dedicated train system that goes to the remote parking station and instead utilizes shuttle buses.

I lived in the Dallas area back in the 80s and traveled there before that, so I used the Airtrans system several times. I just wish the rapid transit part of the first video had happened. They didn't even connect DART light rail to the airport until 2014 and that's still slow.
