Can you surf in the East River?
Apparently so...
I was recently in NY and my friend Chris Gentile, owner of Pilgrim Surf Supply, said he had seen waves break in the East River before. So we went and checked it out and made this little video of the experience :)

If you are wanting to try this yourself, I used riverkeeper.org to check water quality. A great site to check if you are ever concerned about water quality anywhere. They do a bunch of testing world wide.

I got stopped by a Cop on Presque Isle, Erie Pa. Was changing out of my wetsuit and it was snowing. He was talking to dispatch and the Cop says I don't have a PFD. Dispatcher says "Does he have a leash"? I'm like Yup, right here Dude. The Cop couldn't give me a ticket! Ha Ha. Lucky the Dispatcher knew Jim Fisher who owns a Skate/Wind Surf shop in town. It was 1992. (from Texas Tom)

WITH 11/12 FOOT SURFBOARDS YOU COULD RIDE THE RIPPLES CAUSED BY THE WIND. MAYBE JUST THE WIND ALONE WOULD PUSH ALONG.. That is a sea kayak surf spot if the conditions are right, there are a few other brakes but tough to ride on a surfboard. Cool video.

I was lucky as a mad full grom back in the day to have an old school windsurfer. I would blast around on our river at a really neat set up with a little sandy point. Knowing the schedule of the massive ferries in the arvie, I would drop the gear and pull the centreboard and wait for the best little pealing section and just Duke it on the sail board. Was some record rides over the seasons..Stoke is where you find it 😃

Maybe the guy getting barreled was surfing a storm swell that came up the river from out at sea on a big 20 foot plus day and not a ferry wave. I don’t know I’m from California does it get 20 foot in the Atlantic near New York City?
