I'm one of these people that's quite obsessive about being well organised, it's stood me in very good stead in business for the last 40 years and by following those principles in photography it really does make life a lot easier. That little pouch has everything I might need to do stills photography, so if I grab my tripod and camera I know I have everything to hand if I haven't brought any additional baggage or equipment. 😊👍

I went with APSC and Fuji X series for lighter weight better lens options and because you have enough pixels but not enough to get huge files a raw file is like 20mb each.

They have been so many times over the last couple of years, even when you and I have been out, when there's been something interesting going on on a peak four or 5 miles away. And a lens like this is perfect to pick off those shots. My 100mm just wasn't cutting it. As you know, once you start to get up out of the valley you have these amazing lines of sight that most people don't have when they don't do the hiking. So I guess that's why really long focal lengths tend not to feature matching landscapes 😊👍

Hi, you're very welcome. It might be worth your while looking for a good condition mk2 because it's a huge step up from the mk1, but the mk3 doesn't really add that much more to the specification. And you will find a mk2 at a much more competitive price. Just a thought 😊👍

Hi Michael I'll certainly think about doing a quick post processing video specifically for this lens at these sort of focal lengths because to be honest it does take a little bit of engineering to make something of the RAW file. 😊👍

Shhh don't tell anyone, mate, but yes it was a colossal amount of work to make anything of them! Well, actually, to be fair not so much "a lot of work", but a certain set of processing techniques that I've refined over time that might raise a few eyebrows if I shared them!

David. Sad news about Olympus. What are your thoughts as a recent convert?

Hi Rob, I tried the 40 to 150 and really enjoyed it although not with a converter. And it was that that encouraged me to look at the 300 because I found 150 just wasn't quite long enough. So I'm really happy with this combination of these two lenses. 😊👍

It’s always a pity when an organisation with a long heritage falls by the wayside. But they have rather brought it upon themselves with some horribly inept management over the last 5 to 10 years. That said, they still do make some extremely good equipment and it’s quite possible that the new company which has bought the camera Division, and they are experts in repackaging and selling on businesses such as Sony laptops, it’s possible that they will still be around in years to come. From a personal perspective I’m not too worried because my equipment is reliable and I expect it to give me a good return on investment over quite a long period of time. I don’t expect to be looking for new gear for at least another five years 😊👍🏻

Yes mate, I thought you were pushing the boat out a bit moving over to the Hasselblad. But if you sold just a fraction of the rest of your collection you could probably get some more decent glass for it!! 😊👍

I have done one or two Lightroom videos back in the day, but recent excursions into post-processing have been in the context of showing how I worked with specific images from location shoots rather than just a processing video. So as they're not badged as processing videos I've added them to a playlist. They're not all Lightroom, some Photoshop too. But only Adobe as I've use their stuff professionally knocking for 20 years now so I'm pretty locked in to the way they do things. My pro lens does tend to still live on the camera body, but I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of use out of this new addition. I'm in two minds about acquiring an ultrawide as well, but I haven't missed that end of the focal range as much as the long end! 😊👍

D Griff Gallery I know what you mean. At one time I had I guess what some photographers refer to as the holy trinity of lenses. 7-14, 12-40 and 40-150 all f/2.8's. Even using the micro four thirds system that became too much weight and bulk for me to carry around along with the em-1 mkii. I did sell both the 12-40 and 40-150 lenses and purchased the 12-100 which I am very happy with. I did keep the 7-14 but I have to say I've maybe only used it a few times. I'm seriously considering selling that and purchasing an em-5 mkiii because of the similarity in size and weight to my current em-10 mkii which I really like while retaining most of the capabilities of the em-1 mkii. If that works for me I may end up selling the pro gear and just keeping the 9-18, 14-150 and 75-150 which would give me a very light compact system which I would probably use a lot more. My primary camera and lens would then become the em-5 with the 14-150 mm. To be honest I really can't see a difference in the quality of the photos I'm getting with the non pro glass vs the pro. Maybe it's just my 75 year old eyes. If you get a chance sometime I would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you once again for responding to my original comments.

Hi Peter, you make a very good point about the negligible difference between pro and regular glass. I think it’s much more noticeable in larger brand examples. For example some Canon and Nikon entry level lenses are very poor. But when you’re looking at mid level and pro I think that separation is much reduced. And, of course, by the time the average photography enthusiast has moved on from basic kit lenses they’re starting to be more complete proponents of the craft so that further minimises the gap. So, I guess what I’m saying, in a nutshell is that it’s nothing to do with your eyesight it’s that you’re probably pretty good at what you do, and so you don’t need to spend stupid amounts of money on glass that’s only marginally better and is designed to flatter the “professionals“ 😊👍🏻

Yes the news here about the chicken factory has come as quite a shock as there is now talk of us remaining in a tight lockdown even when restrictions elsewhere in Wales are being lifted. But what is of more concern is that the town in which it is located is our nearest and where we do our routine shopping etc. So we're having to be even more careful than normal, especially with Mrs G being quite vulnerable! 😊👍

Ah yes, James, that actually wouldn't have been a bad suggestion at all. Since my widest lens goes down to 12mm I have been thinking about options for an ultrawide, But I don't think I would want to add much more weight to my bag so it would be unlikely to be a zoom even if only a short range. Also, I would want it to double as an astro lens. So I have it in mind to acquire a Laowa 7.5mm f/2.0 prime. It's rectilinear (I hate fisheyes!), gets good reviews, is extremely light and even though it's entirely manual that's no problem to me at all. It's not often I use anything wider than my 12mm for landscapes, but every now and then I would like that extra width, and I'd be quite happy to carry an extra 150 g in my bag for those instances 😊👍

Hi Kathleen, yes I think I'm going to enjoy this lens as much as you do! As it happens, Caernarfon castle is one of a ring of castles around this part of the North Wales coast established by Edward I after he completed his conquest of the Welsh principalities in 1283. So this castle building is actually a little later than the answer given by Nick. He's quite right, that there is evidence of castles existing in this location following the Norman conquest of the late C11th, but this particular building. including the fortified town walls, was completed in the early 1300s.

D Griff Gallery That is quite fascinating information about the castle. You live in the middle of the past. We have nothing that old in the USA, particularly in this part of the country. The cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde National Park date from about that time. Mesa Verde is a very interesting place with a historical mystery in its story. If you are ever in this area, it is well worth a visit. One of my favorite places in the world - you won’t believe the views from the top of the cliffs!

I have very few localities on my bucket list as I’ve been very fortunate to have traveled the world. But there are few ‘returns’ and new places in the US and your area is definitely one of them 😊👍🏻

Hi Manuel, yes I also used the 40 to 150 for moon photography recently, And it was partly that which encouraged me to look at a longer focal length. I wasn't even considering the Olympus 300 mm prime lens, because even though it is pro this 75 to 300 does exactly what I needed to do at a fraction of the weight and price! 😊👍

You make a good point about the flapping straps from my pouch, although it's fair to say that with a very long lens out at the far end of the focal range it was always going to be the lens it self which creates far more vibration than those little bits of webbing in these circumstances. If I was having a problem with it when shooting at a much shorter focal length and needing to have a slower shutter speed, you're quite right, the pouch would come straight off! 😊👍

Hi Patrick, I'm willing to bet that the Nikon will be pretty good because they know what they're doing when it comes to quality lenses. And at the time I switched out to Olympus, it was still a close run thing as to whether I would stay with Nikon. Far as the post processing, well to be honest, it took a little "creative flair" to get to the point where I was willing to share the image! I've had some other feedback requesting a processing video, and given that it would be very specific to the requirements of long lenses in hazy conditions, I might well lift the lid on what I had to do with it! 😊👍

And I mean longer than 200 mm because so many people have full frames 70 to 200s. Hello Issac, I'm probably not the best person to answer this as I don't do much in the way of wildlife photography. However, I'd be willing to bet that many would suggest the 40-150mm f2/8 Pro, coupled with either an MC-14 or MC-20 teleconverter. But that's only if it's absolutely has to be a zoom lens. Most wildlife photographers that I know of using Olympus equipment swear by the prime 300mm f4/0. This gives you an effective full frame focal length of 600mm, and, working in conjunction with the IBIS, you have 6 stops of stabilisation, which I would expect to be extremely useful for long-range wildlife. Anyway, hopefully you'll be able to get more input from other photographers who specialise in this sort of thing more so than I do, but I hope this is helpful. 😊👍

Hi Hagen, if I assume you're using the same body as me, EM1mk2 (or EM5mk3 which is the same sensor / processor) click the Menu button, go to Custom Menu > D1 > Info Settings > Info > Set the checkbox for "Highlight & Shadow". Another good tip is to always have the Histogram visible and ensure that the far right pixels are not piled up against the right hand side of the graph. Hope these are helpful 😊👍

Hello, I'm not very familiar with the EPL series of Olympus cameras but I understand they use a micro four thirds lens mount system and so this lens should fit without the need for an adapter. 😊👍

Hello Steven, well even though the lens doesn't have any built-in stabilisation the camera has about five stops of IBIS. So it's still pretty effective. That said, being a landscape photographer the camera is usually on a tripod and so a slow shutter speed is rarely a problem. 😊👍

It's not uncommon for brands to change hands and remain viable, or even move on to be much more successful. Lamborghini haven't done too badly under Audi's ownership. But from a purely personal angle I'm quite happy with my Olympus equipment which I'm sure will serve me pretty well for many years to come. And I am certainly not even thinking about switching brands at all, I never give any thought whatsoever to camera equipment and what's available in the marketplace. 😊👍

Hi Andrew, I used it for about 18 months after I made this, but since moved up to a 40-150 f/2.8 Pro with a 2x teleconvertor. I wanted the bigger aperture for wildlife and couldn't see the point of keeping the old lens. It made some very good images though, but there were specific use-cases where I would be shooting one peak from another. Or very long shots of moon and sun rising / setting. All use cases were replaced by the new lens. If you would rarely shoot out to 2-300mm for landscapes then you'd probably be better off saving your money, and it's not really any use for wildlife as it's just not fast enough 😊👍

@@DGriffGallery Thanks for the swift reply. I'm leaning more towards the 40-150 F4 Pro. I know that lens won't accept teleconverters but it's smaller and lighter than the F2.8, not to mention less dear. I think for tele landscapes, the 40-150mm range would be more suited to the geography I'm likely to encounter in this part of the world. As an aside, I am very impressed with the images you are getting with the Olympus 14-150mm as well.

A swap of my 40-150 f2.8 for the new 40-150 f4 is one option I am looking at (but can't use my teleconverter with it for my occasional RSPB reserve trips). I have the 12-100 Pro and that is my workhorse lens and a 100-200 f4 Pro would be a great addition if OMDS could be persuaded to make one. Panasonic Leica do a 50-200 which has good reviews, but Wex advise me that some functions on my EM1mkIII won't work with this lens (e.g. ProCapture). Please keep up your very informative Videos - a great mixture of technical and compositional advice in great surroundings from a user rather than a paid OMDS Ambassador. Hope to be back on Anglesey in the Spring.

@@DGriffGallery That would be great. I have dozens of photos taken from a small airplane that suffer from the same appearance symptoms of the before shots of this long range landscape video. I can improve them using dehaze and adding a little bit of "S" shape to the luminance curve, but it makes them look artificial where yours look beautifully natural.

Hi Owen, whilst it's obviously a very sad day when an organisation with such long heritage falls on difficult times, the company which is acquiring the camera division has had some notable successes in turning round failing ventures and selling them on. One example being Sony VAIO laptops. So it's quite possible there still will be Olympus equipment available in future, possibly rebranded but still using the Olympus DNA. So perhaps all is not lost. That said, from a personal perspective it will have no impact on my photography as I am fully equipped and not even close to considering options for some years to come 😊👍

Hello, yes they have announced that they are selling their camera division to a company called JIP who specialise in restructuring and selling on struggling corporate divisions. An example of the sort of thing they do is Sony VAIO laptops, which they rescued some years ago quite successfully. Olympus have decided to concentrate on their medical instruments division which is where they are able to make consistent profits, something they have struggled with in photographic equipment over the last few years. 😊👍

Olympus lens hood is only 15. USD. And the auto focus is nice to have when walking around in Japan taking candid street shots which are kind of frowned upon by Japanese folks. I have many lenses that I adapt to my EM5III. And while they are kind of fun occasionally, I just stick with the native glass. 💁🏻‍♀️💕
