The whole school is thrown into turmoil when a student commits suicide at school - especially Caitlin, since the student is her ex-boyfriend, Claude.

starfox Unfortunately, the Claude Tanners of today's world probably would've went on a school shooting rampage; back then when this episode aired something like that would've been unheard of. I remember when this 1st aired, it was a big deal that a student would actually consider self-harm as means of dealing with their personal problems.

Same thing in "The Breakfast Club." There's a scene where Anthony Michael Hall's character pulls a gun out of his bag. They all freak out. Having done suicide ASSIST courses in retrospect, Claude exhibited a lot of 'asks', as in, 'please ask me if I am thinking about killing myself'. Of course you can't expect a bunch of high school kids to be able to see this but I think suicide ASSIST classes would be beneficial in high schools. "Are you thinking about killing yourself?" is pretty much one of the hardest things you can ask someone. But if you can get someone some help, it is worth it.

This took place before mass killings in schools. Claude is an anomaly, having only killed himself. If the scene was reenacted, it's likely Claude would have killed Caitlin, Joey, and possibly Mr. Raditch (just because he's the supreme authority figure of the school), before killing himself as well.

I feel bad for him but he had trouble before meeting Caitlin.
@felixthecat27867 жыл бұрын
Yeah I mean, I even understood his point of view. His parents were coming down on him, he didn't want to evoke his father's wrath with the whole vandalizing thing. My brother and my dad were like that. They just hated each other and my dad constantly bullied him. His dad could have been violent, they never addressed that. Realistically, it probably wasn't even about Caitlin, but I think it's fascinating that she made it all about her. The guy had isolated himself from his friends, was isolated from his parents, the school, the students of Degrassi-are these not warning signs?? Sometimes people are just too oblivious to understand the warnings signs because they do NOT care for their fellow man. We already know that Raditch doesn't always notice these things, he missed the warning signs with Rick.
@takearriabrown76446 жыл бұрын

How much pain they have to feel for suicide to become an option is entirely dependent on the person. Some people are weaker and more unstable than others and see suicide as the only way out sooner and under less pressure. Claude himself appears to be incredibly unstable. He's desperately searching for love and acknowledgement, but is spurned by all of the people who he feels should love him. You can literally see the world crashing down around him as he realizes that he's generally unwanted.

I can't even disagree. Jt death in the next generation and Adam Torres too. But this definitely was darker. Crazy how till now I never spotted this episode. I watched quite a few DJH and DH reruns myself.

Right after Alexa said "that's all I had to say," you can hear the gun shot

This is definitely an episode in which this show's tendency to address sensitive topics with textbook accuracy actually takes away a little bit. If they used a more established character instead of Joanne, there would have been more emotional weight. Also, if they built up Claude's personal life and struggles it would have felt more believable-but I guess that part regarding suicide is accurate, because we only see bits and pieces of somebody's life. But narratively, Snake finding the body feels significant, because he just had a moment in which he put his foot down towards Wheels, whose behavior closely mirrors Claude's in terms of blame shifting.

They also did this same plot with Degrassi the next generation with this abusive guy and Terry.

Claude was toxic to Caitlyn from the beginning to the end. He mentally ruined her

He left her behind at a nuclear plant and he wouldn’t attend court with her because it was on a school day

That's probably true. I think that's one reason Snake is so messed up about it. If he had gotten there a bit sooner, he may have been able to stop it.

Claude has to be the single most hateable and then instantly most forgivable and sympathetic character in Degrassi history. Yeah he was a pretentious douche, who the hell wasn't in high school? I remember quoting Godard and wearing skinny jeans and shit too man, and having my heart broken my a younger girl who I totally deserved to have it broken by. But I'm still here man, and Claude ain't. That kid needed help he never got and this is the saddest moment in the history of any of the Degrassi shows to me. Claude could have been somebody man.

Correct me if I'm wrong; but when you pull a trigger of a gun, should almost the whole building herd the shot of the gun????
@sharonrigs7999 Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily the entire building. These old schools are built with thick cinderblock walls and heavy doors. Both are good at insulating sound. .45ACP is a loud but subsonic cartridge that lacks the loud crack(sonic boom) of a faster cartridge like 9mm.

Both Claude and Rick used a .45 1911. Interesting. I wonder if it was the same gun?
