Chevrolet Silverado 5.3L Engine How to Replace Bad Oil Pressure Sensor. This video shows how to replace the oil pressure sensor / sending unit on 1999-2013 GM vehicles with the Vortec V8 engine and the oil pressure sensor location. If your low engine Oil Pressure light is on or the engine oil pressure gauge is stuck at 80 psi or shows "Oil Pressure Low" (Low oil pressure) or if your oil pressure gauge is fluctuating, but you know it's not an issue with the engine oil pressure then most likely the pressure sensor is faulty. I show the Oil Pressure sensor location and what the gauge shows when the sensor goes bad and what it normally reads.

If you've been experiencing issues with your oil pressure readings or suspect a faulty sensor, this tutorial is for you!
D. Hamm will show you the tools needed and provide essential tips to ensure a smooth and successful replacement. By following these instructions, you'll save both time and money by avoiding a costly trip to the mechanic.
Not only will this video guide help you gain a better understanding of your vehicle's oil pressure system, but it will empower you to confidently tackle this task on your own. Thank you for the helpful video! Based on my research on the filter, if you have active fuel handling where the computer cuts off cylinders, you probably have a filter. I had the peg high 80 pressure. Rev engine it would drop, then stall to 0 then go back to 80. For my job on an 05 Tahoe with 5.3L, I grabbed 3 moving boxes stacked flat on top of each other to lay on over the engine area, I put a 3 step stool at the bumper to stand on and just laid over the engine on the boxes. This really made it quite comfortable to find the sensor. At first I tried to get my big hands back there, only first removing the shield cover, it wasn't possible so I disconnected the fuel rail line as you show and then using a boroscope saw the cable connected to the sensor and just fished my hand down the cable to the sensor. At the sensor I gently lifted the clip, then pulled it off. I could feel the yellow grommet seal in the sensor. I got the socket on with the 3/8 wobble extension 6" and then a 2-3" wobble (2x wobble). I fished the socket/wobble tool down the side, got it on by hand, then using my left hand holding socket in place and using flex 3/8 ratchet removed it. Make sure to have a good grip on the socket and sensor, in my case the grommet fell out of the sensor, was in the socket, then it dopped out into the bay and luckily on the driveway vs hidden for life on the frame. There is also a gray insert on the old sensor you want to move into the new sensor, I think it just tightens up the pin guidance to ensure a snug fit and contact (I used a little pick to get the gray insert out). I used the boroscope to look down at the hole for a filter, this engine had none. Bolted up new sensor, for safety of the socket, keep your left hand on the socket to ensure it doesn't run up and go on an angle and crack the sensor. You will feel the sensor have resistance once hand screwing in as the thread sealant adds some resistance. It tightened up nice and snug, then I paid attention to where the clip notch on socket was as you are doing this all blind by feel. I started the tahoe up, using boroscope ran it for 5 minutes and looked around the sensor for leaks. There were none, pressure now really close to 40 at idle and when I rev the engine, it tracks with higher pressure. In all the job wasn't bad if you have wobble extensions and a thin wall oil sensor socket, I could probably do the job again in under 30 minutes from setup to back up and running. If you have the right tools, you can do this repair.

this is the best video on the subject. I am needing to do this on my 2004 Avalanche (pressure gauge on dash pegs at "80" with key on engine off or engine running). I'm going to have to disconnect that fuel line too because I have large hands and thick arms. One thing I have not seen in any video is how to disconnect the electrical connector on it. Nowadays it seems that few are truly press and release, most seem to have some funky lock setup or hidden release.

You could probably ask them to replace that for you for no extra labor since it’s super easy with the intake and distributor out. I’d do it. It’ll take them 5 minutes (don’t let them tell ya any different) The cost of the switch will be more there but they’ll use the good part like I did. You can do it yourself as well if rather. I know this is an old video, but I am seeing a little low oil pressure in my 5.3 while cold. When the truck runs for a bit, it'll move back to the original pressure. I've had this truck for a long time, and it has over 320,000 miles on her. Any information or tips would be great appreciated, truly believe that anyone can learn to do mechanical work. It is rewarding and cost saving for sure! Great video by the way.
@dhammiam
@dhammiam Жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliment. It’s usually that the oil pressure drops when warmed up. With that many miles the cam bearings could be worn causing the drop. You could run a heavier viscosity oil and see if that helps. Lucas oil treatment is good to use and try as well.
@chadball8296
@chadball8296 Жыл бұрын
@@dhammiam I'm trying to find a 6.0 or another 5.3 to swap in there. I have had the best luck with this truck. Simple maintenance and replaced the 1-2 solenoid in the transmission. What would be a safe weight to try out? I live in the desert of California but in the winter, it can drop a couple degrees under freezing, not very often though.
@dhammiam
@dhammiam Жыл бұрын
@@chadball8296 another thought on the oil pressure is if the pickup screen is clogged or the oil pump wore out it could take it some time to build pressure. As far as oil, you could use the recommended oil, and replace one quart with 20-50 and another with Lucas and see how that works.

Those are great words for the people who feel they can do it. Me personally I'm a certified aircraft technician, unfortunately not licensed yet, but I try and do all the work on my 03 trailblazer ext 5.3. I've even overhauled my transmission, so I've gotten really in depth when it comes to working on my truck. I been having a lifter problem for about 2 years and getting louder. I noticed some motor oil near the bottom of the transmission, so about to drop the oil pan change gasket and O-rings and I've also noticed that my oil pressure guage stays around 40 no lower and just slightly higher to about 43 or 45.

Sounds like you’re doing great. When I went through college to be a dealership technician, most of the others in my class didn’t come out rebuilding transmissions because they were intimidated by all the parts involved. I just set my goals one at a time and each time went for the next level. I wondered if I could become a nascar engine builder and did. I believe anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Aircraft Technician is impressive. I thought I could cause issues if I didn’t assemble a nascar engine correctly, but an airplane is a whole other level. Keep doing what you want to do and you will do great. That’s important. Let Me know if you have any questions. As for the lifter issue, could be a number of things. You can run the engine without the rocket cover on and be sure oil is getting to the rockers. Maybe while you have the pan off replace the oil pump. I’d suggest taking the new pump apart, inspecting and cleaning it. Thanks and good luck

@@dhammiam hey that's impressive. A NASCAR TECH! WOW. That's amazing for real. I'm happy you were able to accomplish that. I dropped the pan already and changed out the gasket which was completely flattened. There was very little ínsulation left on the gasket, and also changed to O-ring on the pick up, but still have the lifter problem. Unfortunately! Oil pressure is fine its still around the same 40ish I even feel more power accelerating. Took me over 12 hours 🤣 only because I was working on the floor and that sucks but she's running good and no more leak. I didn't remove the struts or the sway bar links and when I pulled out the 4x4 actuator the drive shaft came out with it. Lmao, but everything is fine.

@@dhammiam oh and I do have the oil pressure switch that I'm not sure if I should change it or not. I don't ha e any codes, I didn't have them before. No miss fire or anything so either the lifter is stuck or needs to be changed. I'm pricing every thing now. Head gasket, bolts, valve cover gasket etc.

@@JovanValentin711 there’s lots of products that claim to help lifter ticking. You could try some marvel mystery oil for I think maybe 1000 miles? Look that up. I’ve used CD2 before years ago. These are some alternatives to try before digging in. I’d say replace the op sensor if you’re already in there and it’s easy to get to but hold off till then.

So I will be taking back the 1--1/16 socket . Do not do what I did and by the socket the KZfaq video said to use before you by the oil sensor ! Other than that , it was relatively an easy job .

It’s most like valve covers leaking onto the exhaust manifolds. Especially if the drain back holes are clogged in the heads allowing oil to puddle up in the head and leak past work gaskets

Super helpful, thank you. My pressure guage randomly drops to 30 at idle , I don't notice an issue while idling or when I accelerate. Could it be the oil pressure sensor as well or am I having possible issues with the oil pump??
@dhammiam
@dhammiam Жыл бұрын
Most likely the issue would be in the sensor becoming weak or the gauge which isn’t likely. If you’re running 5W 30 oil you could try going to 10 W 30 or 40 and see if that helps. Mine stays close to 40 at idle

Looks like your vehicle had someone cut off part of the "sound barrier" blocking access to the sender. I had declined to try this job when we had a 2005 Yukon with a Driver Information Center warning, but its oil pressure gauge still worked fine. One should know that I watched quite a few KZfaq videos before starting, but still had to lay towels over the engine, use a stool, and do some of the work left-handed. I was able to remove one end of a plastic tube at the rear of the engine for more clearance. I did not remove a second tube or the fuel line at its connection. I broke off the gray "protector" on the oil sender harness connector with a screwdriver, and with left hand pushing a long screwdriver against the connector tab and right hand on the connector, I was finally able to release the connector from the oil sender. The special 1 1/16" oil sender socket I bought like 25 years ago did not fit over the sender, I used a 27mm deep socket. Then I used a 1/2" wobble extension, about 5" long, and that was not easy to push into the 27mm deep socket, but the socket had to go on first. Then I used a stubby 1/2" drive flex ratchet to unscrew the oil sender. Of course once that was unthreaded it fell somewhere so that took 15 minutes or more to find & remove. So I went to O'Reilly and bought PS508 oil sender, which actually did fit my special socket (but I still used the 27mm deep one). So with the new sender (I did not even try to find if the engine had a filter screen, I didn't feel one) purchased, I tied a piece of twine around it it case I dropped that, and screwed that in a few turns with my left hand. Then I put the 27mm deep socket over that, then the wobble extension, then the stubby flex ratchet. 15 minutes later I had that screwed in, and actually in similar orientation as the factory one. So 10 minutes more to remove those tools without dropping them. So 15 minutes later I was able to blindly turn the connector to correct orientation to snap that on. I re-connected the one plastic pipe I had removed, and started the Yukon: no oil pressure displayed, and check engine light was still on. So I disconnected the battery, touched cables together to erase all codes/clear computer, reconnected the battery, and started it up: all was working - SUCCESS !!! So even though The Cuss cannot fix everything, I was successful today. Yes, this took me several hours, but since I'd just ordered Mrs. Cusser 4 new tires (as the 5-year-old ones were quite dry-rotted), felt why not save $300 to $500 by doing this myself. Some mechanics apparently remove the entire intake manifold for easy access, but that's labor hours. For me, trouble with the special oil sender socket I had threw me for a loop, but the 27mm deep socket I had did save me. Realize that 4 different times I packed up stuff and quit, saying the mechanic could try his luck Tuesday, but The Cuss is a persistent little cuss, for sure. Mrs. Cusser is ecstatic.
