How does DHCP work?
When a device on your network needs an IP address, more than likely it will use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to obtain the IP address and other network configuration setting.
Below are the steps taken by the devices to obtain an address using DHCP.
DHCPDiscover - Looks for a DHCP server
DHCPOffer - The DHCP server offers an address
DHCPRequest - The host requests to lease the address
DHCPACK - DHCP server sends the IP addresses to the host
DHCP is an essential part of everyday life for our networks that we take for granted every single day! Let’s Take a moment to appreciate the work DHCP does.

@@MrBrightsides DHCP packets probably are all broadcast messages cuz the client doesnt have an ip yet

@@MrBrightsides They indeed are broadcast. In the DHCP packet there is a field that contains the MAC address of the client interested in configuring its parameters. All the other hosts that recieve those DHCP packets will drop them at the application level, since they recognize that the value of the client MAC address inside those packets is not equal to theirs.

hello bro, you are studying network, we have a guy who provide wifi service to our city and we have access to its office(or server) can we use that somehow to create a rotating proxy , (ie use all the router's IP in that network to send request. :)

Hi guys, There are a lot of questions about the DHCPOffer being broadcasted. Sometimes is broadcast, sometimes it's unicast. It can depend on the situation such as obtaining a new IP or renewing an existing one. I made the video like this for simplicity sake. If you fancy diving into the details, check out RFC 2131. Hopefully, this clears up any confusion.

After the DHCP Server responds do the DHCPDiscover packet, the communication is not unicast ? The dhcp discover is broadcast, after that, the communication is unicast.

Really like the way you explain things. Went on to watch the OSI Model vid & then TCP/IP accordingly. All stemmed from having a frustratingly slow internet with dropouts. I realised I needed to know what all these different acronyms mean and what they relate to. Now I know some simple stuff, I want to go deeper. So when the lease runs out, does the host get first dibs on renewing that same IP address? Does the DHCP server check if that same PC is still present, and if so, will it automatically keep that same IP address assigned to that same PC -- with a new lease date?
