I'd love to see a video on how to deploy an access point using only the 5 GHz radio. This used to be easy in Unifi, but now I think it involves setting up AP groups or something like that. A tutorial would be great, and I've not found one elsewhere on KZfaq. I appreciate this community!

Chris, great video as always. While UI's way of setting up RSVPs is somewhat convenient, it is also very limited. I was quite disappointed to find that I cannot create RSVPs in advance of a client connecting. Even a Windows DHCP Server allows me to create RSVPs based on MAC knowledge. We should be able to create RSVPs in advance since it is all MAC based. As it stands now, to get a device onto an IP that I want (EG: all of my UI cameras are in a contiguous set of IPs), I have to add the camera to the network, set it's IP manually in the Unifi network app, then I have to bounce the POE on the port to get the camera to send out a new DHCP Discover packet and run through the sequence again. That is crappy. We should be able to create the RSVP, adopt the camera and have it on the IP we want upon boot. Unifi has a loooooooong way to go to get caught up to the rest of the world on basic networking features.

Chris, thanks for excellent training. When configuring a network for an MDU building, I prefer to use WiFi routers vs APs in each unit to control DHCP locally. Otherwise, EdgeRouter must manage a class B network because you can have over 10 devices per unit and 100 units requiring 1000 DHCP addresses. Surely, managing 1000 addresses in class B will slow down EdgeRouter. Also, you achieve greater securing behind a local firewall. Port isolation is possible for security, but it eliminates printer use since clients and printer must communicate.

Love the simple videos! One thing I was curious about the advantages to using a DHCP Reservation vs just assigning it a Static IP outside of the DHCP Pool?

One thing I can think of is in order to use a given device on multiple networks having different IP schemes...so you don't need to configure the IP address settings of the device itself for network A and then reconfigure it for network B

Static IPs can be a pain to manage, as you have to set it up on the client side. Using the reservation on the router means you can see it all in one place and you can change/move them. It sometimes is also needed (not in the way described in this video) if you have a windows AD or similar, where you'd make that the DHCP server. In summary it is just nice to have it all in a simple place. I saw GunMD's post as writing my response; That is another very good point. DHCP is easier for a user that moves a laptop from one place to another, as you virtually always need DHCP. It is just the easier end-user experience, but the reservation means that when you plug that laptop in (or connect via wifi), you get the IP that was kept reserved for you, say if you have file shares or something that a backup device on your network 'pulls' from.

I forgot - printer IPs are typically very good to 'lock'; Potentially also 'network devices' (APs, switches, amongst others). You can need that especially if you don't have Unifi and/or another system that allows you to easily find stuff back again on your network. But yeah network printers are usually handy to lock to IP.

Best advantage is central admin on a LAN, rather than configure each individual device interface. Further, harder for any network user to fiddle with, as it takes a lot to fake a MAC address. Just as you have a pool of fixed and DHCP addresses, you can create a virtual pool for reserved addresses by creating place holders in the range say 51-150, within the DHCP pool, Iain take MAC addresses. Delete each fake entry as you require for a genuine one.

This was simple enough, something that I couldn't find in the datasheet if it was possible or not on Unifi :) Something that would be really cool, that I haven't seen anywhere, would be the ability to specify a MAC range/the vendor portion of the MAC to a pool of IP addresses. That way you could say all my Ubiquity devices should get an IP between .154 and .254 for example. I wonder why nobody has implemented that yet? Maybe Cisco has a patent on it or something :D

This is the most comprehensive video I could find in KZfaq for this matter, thank you and well done! However, I still can't find an answer for my question. If I already have a list of MAC and IP Address mappings for all my Smart/IoT devices, how can I upload the whole list in a bulk fashion, without having to create reservations one by one? (I did this in Pi-hole before but I'm considering buying a Dream Machine now and make it my DHCP server).

On my EdgeRouter, I use static maps for all devices on my network and assign them IP addresses outside of the lease range. When I create my static map entries, I put them outside of the DCHP lease range. What this does for me is if I find a new device that has an IP address in the lease range, then I know it is a device that I haven't approved for my network. Once I figure out what the new device is, I give it a static map address outside of the dynamic lease range. This allows me to have a lease range that is smaller than usual. This is my "lazy man" way of auditing devices on my network.

Hello, I have a EdgeRouter Pro, connected to a UniFi Switch Aggregation (and from there to other switches). I have setup a bond0 (2xSFP) to the Aggregation switch running 3 networks, and this works fine. However if I add my DHCP 192.168.1.x to bond0, things do work, i have wired internet, but all wifi-devices no longer has internet connection? Bond0 setup: hash-policy layer2+3 , mode 802.3ad

Fun fact, if you have clients using this you cannot change a networks IP address. You have to go to each device and disable this feature before it can be changed. I wish unifi showed a list of your DHCP reservations like Edge OS does or be able to setup DHCP reservations before the device even connects. Unifi would be annoying to roll out a printer fleet with.

You can’t! One of the reasons I avoid UniFi routers. Other UniFi kit is great, but UniFi routing is poor. It seems like they put all their effort into the graphics to make it look pretty. EdgeOS seems much more functional, but less ‘pretty’.

Did a crazy thing recently for a client. They're repairing lots of units - they wanted the same IP to always be assigned to any device plugged in to a specific port on the specified switches. Not a common thing right? We tried using VLANs and a 1 IP scope on each port... the UDM-Pro went a little nuts after we had just a small number of the VLANs configured. We ended up having to go w Cisco switches which have a port-based DHCP capability. I'm sad Unifi doesn't have an easy way to do it... seems like it would be a really simple thing to implement even though it would so rarely be needed. For my clients being able to plug in a bunch of machines and know exactly what IP to go to each time to work with them has really helped their workflow. :)

Hi Chris and unifi it's really bad to use fixed IP addresses Reason if the client leaves the network and he is not under known clients anymore and you try to modify the network it will give you an error and you have no way of fixing that error Because there is no DHCP lease table everything is under clients/known client

@BrandurFO
@BrandurFO 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct. But he explained it as best possible under the understanding that MAC-addresses are not changed. But I agree with you. This is becoming the norm and very confusing if you don't know about this and trying to "control/make decisions" based on MAC-address. First time (20 years ago) I figured out how to spoof MAC address on college network it was great, but it's just a technical pointer that anyone can change. But, back to the basics. It's fine to help sorting home networks if you like (unless MAC-address changes every time, which I doubt) 😉

If only Windows Server DHCP service had a simple Map button. All the years I have had to record MAC addresses by hand and type them into reservations. I am puzzled why the UDM interface referred on screen to a reserved IP address for your phone as "fixed", when reserved is the correct title (assuming you stuck to you 1-50 for fixed, 51-254 as DHCP pool)?

I was going to ask you to show us how you would create DHCP reservations for devices that have never been on that Network, so the first time you plug them in they get the desired IP address, but we already know the answer to that. With Ubiquiti UDM you pre-stage (or reserve) DHCP addresses the same way you create static DNS entries....YOU CAN'T! I use a lot of ubiquiti equipment, but it's embarrassing talking to other it professionals when they bring those two points up. I love UI but sometimes they have some head scratching and embarrassing omissions.

I know. PFSense, Untangle, and even hell a cheap 30 buck router you can add/import/edit manually MAC/IP's as statics even before plugging in the item into the network. I not sure why/who's thought process was to not include this into the UniFi OS long time ago. It's something that is kind of holding me back from updating to an UDM Pro SE. I don't want to put my many Servers, TV's, multimedia devices, NAS's, etc onto and then have to manually redo all my work from over the years to re-static all of them.
@LetsDIYIt
@LetsDIYIt 2 жыл бұрын
What is driving me crazy is that I cannot manually add a Mac Reservation to a client that is not showing up in the client list on the Unifi.UI Portal. This is ridiculous to me. No matter what I do, the client will not show up in the list, which from my research is a common problem with this software. So as it stands, I cannot reserve the IP on this particular device. I had to set a static IP address on the device and then edit the DHCP pool to a smaller pool so that the static IP sits outside the pool. I should not have to do this. Why can we not just manually add a client via MAC address reservation, much like the Edge OS allows?

So all you really did was give a static ip to a device in your DHCP pool in UnFi. I thought DHCP Reservations was the same as Static Mapping with the controls of adding mac address and other controls. In UnFi is there a way I can add multiple devices with mac address and the DHCP pool will assign the static address.
