In March of 2015 I published a video entitled "Stompbox/Pedal DIs" featuring the Sansamp Bass Driver DI, a relatively early solid state emulation of a classic tube bass amplifier. Since then, amp emulation technology has come a long way! In this video I discuss how to deal with this type of DI as a live sound engineer, and cover specific features of the Origin Effects Bassrig '64 Black Panel, one of the best current examples of the type.
Bookmarks:
00:00 Intro
01:15 Amplifier Emulation pedals
03:27 Why these matter to us as sound engineers
06:24 Two key questions
07:12 Opening demo
07:57 '64 Black Panel introduction
10:28 How do we connect this type of DI to our sound systems?
12:43 Best practices when using this as an amp replacement
15:16 Situations where this may not work
16:51 What do we need to know about these pedals in order to work effectively with the musicians who are using them?
17:28 Difference between the AMP OUT and DI OUT connectors.
20:30 How the DRIVE, BLEND & OUTPUT knobs work together.
26:21 Variations on the amplifier being emulated
30:48 AMP OUT EQ controls
34:22 Closing
Note that this video is not intended to be a full review of this pedal. Rather it is a discussion of how to approach this type of DI as a live sound engineer.
The bass used for all the demos in the video is my 2013 Fender American Standard Precision Bass, strung with D'Addario Chromes flatwound strings. The bass was plugged directly into the Origin Effects '64 Black Panel. The DI OUT and AMP OUT connectors of the pedal were connected to a Tascam DR-100mkIII recorder. The audio was synched in post, the output being recorded is indicated on the screen during the various demo segments.
Many thanks to my friend and fellow musician H.C. Hiew for the loan of the DI box featured in the video.
Erratum: At 29:40 the on-screen annotation says "of of control"; this should read "out of control". Apologies for the error.

Well, Bruno, it's been interesting to watch and learn from your whole series and other videos. You are an excellent teacher. I will be focusing on how to get the cleanest signal in the signal chain from my active sources through the passive DI boxes to a mixer, for my basic setup as a music hobbyist with synthesisers. I will use the equalisers on the mixer to get a brighter sound from the nonpowered conversion passive DI box. My favourites from your DI Box video volumes are 1, 2, 5 & 6. Thank you for sharing your engineering theory and practical setups for an eye view. I will always be coming back to watch your videos for a recite.

Dear Bruno , thank you for this DI update part 7 , I was refreshing my mind with the DI tutorials 1-6 particularly to delve into part 6. To find this recently posted information was icing on a cake. Over last few years I have found your DI tutorage informative, amazingly concise and factual. I am a drummer turned live sound person and I have found your DI studies better than any other resource. A industry lead , a go to library for me . The presentation brings to focus , the key factor to the pedal use, monitoring. The use of digital equipment, iPad, in ear monitoring and wireless equipment is a area which requires your touch I think? I have followed your tutorials on digital mixers (a big leap) but the combination of wireless and analogue for me is next step , have you any existing resources or plans in this area? The Origin Effects BassRig is a versatile and powerful pocket knife. Okay, it is in fact a bit bigger than a pocket knife and it doesn't fit in my pants pocket but it does fit in a bag or a pocket of a bag.😉 I use both an '89 Ampeg SVT-II and an Origin Effects BassRig SV. That may seem ironic or redundant, but not nearly as much as one might quickly assume. Ampeg SVT-II's are equipped with an integrated XLR balanced line out, but the output sounds so awful it's not useable--they're notorious for this flaw--and even if it were a good pre or post-SVT preamp sound that still wouldn't capture or provide simulation of the SVT 8 x 10 cab. That cab is a big part of the SVT stack's distinctive sound. The OE BassRig SV takes care of those things. It also provides an ideal means to OD the SVT-II (without simply cranking the SVT itself extremely loud to achieve the same) plus the benefits of a Low Pass Filter and High Pass Filter. So rather than being simply redundant, the Origin Effects BassRig SV augments or complements my SVT-II, and that's just the beginning of all the things I can do with my Origin Effects BassRig SV with my Ampeg or as a stand-alone amplifier emulator DI. As this comprehensive video covers, it can even be used as a clean DI for my instrument, bypassing the amp emulation, with or without the 8 x 10 cab sim. It's a tool with practical uses or applications for practicing, rehearsing, recording, and live performance.

It might have something to do with the AMP OUT EQ - either the circuitry or the settings. Perhaps write to Origin and ask?

For the tsa 4-700, it has separate inputs for all 3 channels. If I want to use all the channels for output, should i connect an input from the mixer in all the input slots on the back of the amp?

Yes, or you can link/daisy-chain the channels together using the male XLR connector next to the input.

My Amo in church is 6000 connected to 4 jbl full range speakers with 4ohms each but the amplifier produces much heat & tripping .can you do a video on speaker and amplifier matching and things to adhere strictly when purchasing an original amplifier because there substandard ones in my region please 2 Please do also a video on connection of a graphic EQ,gate and crossovers
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions Жыл бұрын
It's normal for amplifiers to produce a lot of heat when running hard into a low impedance load. Power tripping means that your power supply is not correctly rated for the load being drawn by the power amp. I have a video on a gate/compressor unit here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLORnbNzyqerkqs.html

by this, where should I EQ, mixer or from the pedal or from the guitar?
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions Жыл бұрын
All of the above can be used, by themselves or together. Remember that the EQ on the pedal has no 'flat' position, so adjust the knobs until you get the sound you like. The EQ setting shown in the video is what I believe to be a good general purpose bass EQ.

I would suggest a 31-band EQ for live sound, if required - modern loudspeaker systems are so good that graphic EQs are often not needed, and can actually make the sound worse.

@@GLBProductions been learning from your videos couple months now. most of them are very essentials and concise. I've learned from your videos a lot more on technicalities after learning from izotope youtube channel about their mixing and mastering. your videos balances most of my perspective since it's more on field like soldering, cables, speakers, Di Boxes and etc. It would be great if you create an updated video and playlist from gain staging and etc... videos like the audiouniversity youtube channel(not that I'm compering) a more on visual aids would be great, though I already reviewed my high school physics, to understand electrical and electronic parts of it... because your terminologies are better than any of I've watched from the other youtube videos. continuing your videos and your channel :D
