Actualy the general is the half brother of the actual king of Jin and if one day he takes the throne he has a royal liniage. And in my opinion he is more competent then the king as well. But knowing his strigh-faraward personality and honesty he will never betray his country and evan his idiot king.

The tv adaptation is far worse than the novel, now I understand that 6.6/10 on Imdb. It adds too many irrelevant plotlines like the noble consort or CBJ's birth. Hell, the scene when he abruptly decided to throw a coup d'etat once he realized the emperor's intention was so cool in the novel. Jin emperor was also a reasonable man who just made some mistakes too, now he's just a plain idiot who believes anything anyone tells him.

If the kings or the ones in power were wise, there will be no conflicts or dramas. May I suggest "Story of Minglan" to you. The heroine there is intelligent and a clever strategist who works with her man instead of running away or fighting with him all the time. The king also has a few tricks up his sleeve. Great twist at the end and it's a happy ending too.
