I saw Big Luciano at the Met in this Trovatore..his 'di quella pira' is absolutely the best,ever.he brought the house down..of course he never had the acting charisma of a Domingo, but in opera sometimes you've got to close your eyes and listen (like a cd: you do not see the acting there) no one has ever come close to this Manrico and what I loved about it was that Lucianone seemed so pleased that he was already thinkig of rewarding himself with some lasagne!.you could read it in his eyes!BRAVO!

i think it is learned, because this B, with Pavarotti aged 53, had more ring than any of his other B's I've ever heard, even when he was considerably younger. It is something that legendary tenors like Pavarotti know how to artistically utilize very well; have it when they need it, put it away when they don't. TOTALLY awesome!

I can't TELL you how much I agree with you. People point to Callas as a great actress on stage, but her recordings show that she acted with the voice FIRST. Price, stiff as a board on stage, yet tell me her recorded Butterfly isn't some of the best acting with a voice you've ever heard. And Pavarotti his voice tells you everything you need to know. Shinining in moments of joy, tender in love, dark in anger. Thrilling at all times. These singers knew the music does all the work, not directors.

Pavarotti nearly never sobbed, Vesti la giubba was really the only aria ever he sobbed through, and it wasn't even in the singing, he did it at the end. You'd be hard pressed to find him sobbing in anything else, he did the occasional one at the very close of E lucevan le stelle, but that's about it. He was a very good actor vocally, he used dynamics and shading in his phrasing to create effects.

A half step lower than the original key - and it didn't matter! Still just as exciting, beautiful, and vibrant.

The truly greatest tenor since Caruso.It is a shame we never got to hear Caruso live or recorded well. I heard Pavarotti live in Atlanta March 4, 1978, just him, a piano and 1500 amazed and adoring fans. Rest in Peace, Maestro Tenore Primo Assoluto!

yep, totally agree

it's nice to see someone who understands what opera is really about. people these days are trying so many ridiculous things to get a new fan base it's not even funny. moving the center of pitch up, blasting the orchestra, singers with microphones, and putting people who can't handle it in leads because they "look better" I'm all for trying new things, but this has gotten ridiculous. it's like trying to mix green tea with coca cola.

I agree with you, Pavarotti was a lyrical tenor, and even if he did not hit a high "C" in this performance, he sure delivers a great high "B"!!!!, I saw the complete performance in video (so I cannot compared to others); but must say it sounded very well. I liked it mostly. Agree that when younger or in records, he sang a beautiful high "C", like Lanza (wonderful talented tenor!!!) did in his days. For both talented artists, BRAVOOO!!!!!!!!!

I didn't know that I would be so attacked for my comment. Pavarotti had an amazing voice. A beautiful gift. None can compare. But his acting skills were simply proficient, while the skills of those such as Callas, Domingo, Statas, Fleming, Kanawa, were/are excellent. Though I agree that singing is the most important aspect of opera, the singers are still telling a story on stage. Hence, they must be able to act.

Pavarotti was Pavarotti.
