All these time, I thought that crash recovery mode is some intelligent, software-based fail safe with a lil bit of black-magic on top of it by Shimano.. turns out, it's much more simpler than that.. I thought I'm a decent bike mechanic, used to work in LBS before.. turns out I'm a dummy as well.. thanks for the insight, learn everyday 😅👍

I’d *heard* of crash mode recovery, but had no idea how to do it, so I learned something today. You are a service to the community, my friend! :-D That ride footage… I hope that was a one-way road as it was so narrow! It’s odd watching you ride with the drop-off on your left side like that; seems so unnatural when I’m used to riding on the right side of the road, but I’m sure you’ve gotten used to it. Thanks for the video! This one goes in the Saved pile. ;-)

Outstanding! now I understand..... Last year on a multi day ride with friends I got stuck in the hardest gear after a refuelling stop. After much trying to get the crash mode reset to work, I rode to the nearest "Di2 Specialist" who were very kind, but unable to fix it. 6o bonus km later I caught up with the 'Team'; grabbed a 'support' car and drove a 200km round trip to home to collect my other n+1 steed. Got back around midnight just in time for last drinks. Back home after the Tour, I decided to remove the offending derailleur. When I bumped it it made a loud click and has worked flawlessly since! With the help of your profound technical knowledge, next time I'll just pack a hammer.😅

Just wanted to thank you very much for this vid! I was able to not only know what happened, but also fix my co-worker's Ultegra Di2 derailleur. He had hit a sizeable pothole and it threw it out of wack (surprisingly the two race crashes and getting hit by a car before that didn't throw it into crash mode).

I first came across your channel in 2018 while looking for information about installing Di2. More helpful than the Shimano instructions! Been coming back ever since for your quirky sense of humour, and your incredible video-making skills. Twice had to ride in crash-mode. Both times after stopping for a coffee at a friends house after a ride. No bumps or rough handling of the bike, just slipped into safe mode. Gremlins or fairies for sure. I knew about crash-mode but couldn’t remember how to disengage it. I guess I stumbled across it just by trying to shift through the gears.

I had an interesting experience with crash mode: I was running ultegra rx with 1x chainring, and I put an XTR 11-40 cassette on it and backed out the limit screw. Works pretty well, until I put the clutch on one day, and the extra tension caused the derailleur to enter crash mode 😆 Turn off the clutch and it works fine again for thousands of km

My friend Ive been completely inspired and infatuated with the sound and feel of heading down hill. Your bonus clips literally bring me stoke I love riding up hill. Mainly to go down yes. But I’m absolutely fine with the suffer going up Yet, I’m to dang busy to train enough for weekend trips and I really wanna be doing 150-200km+ rides in and around all these Japanese roads To get to your level. Did you really only ride weekends? Like, your riding plenty weekday yea? You must be 😅 I’m having a hard time trying to find enough time to build up for them long hilly adventures here in JP. I’ve done 50Km 1200meters and 80km 800meters but dang do I wanna get to your level! Looks so fun Tips? Make a video !?!

I’m definitely not the right person to ask for “training” advice hehe. I only ride for fun, and to have fun I prefer not suffering on climbs but rather enjoy them with a decent pace, so I try and keep consistent with my riding, aiming for 10h/week. I do some intervals from time to time when I feel like it, which is very rare. But I definitely try to get a ride or two in during the weekdays.

@@ridesofjapan awesome ! 🍻 Yea, “riding up at a decent pace” that’s all I ask for and is plenty fun. Enjoyable even I just read your banner. Said weekend adventurer. and I have strange problem, rear derailleur won't shift into two largest cogs (no matter if I'm on large or small chainring). and when it go all the way down to smallest, it has two more shifts but motor click for few seconds and nothing happens. when I start back to bigger first two shifts move derailleur 1-2mm and third shift move chain to second cog and it goes above to ninth when it stops (there is enough room until the limit screw, just there are no more shifts).

So glad I watched this just two days before the British National Gravel champs as I hit a huge hole during the race and the rear mech stopped working in the 11t sprocket. However, it took me about 10mins to get it working again as pressing the shift button wasn’t doing anything that I could see. It came back but I was wondering if I was changing in the wrong direction? In my frustration I was probably trying to shift up the cassette (as I was stuck in the 11) when if I had actually tried to shift down multiple times it would have only taken a few seconds to start working again? Is there a direction you should be shifting to re engage the mech? I won the M50 race by persevering with the shifter after this video - so thanks!! 👏👏👏

Honestly it's better than etap axs..faster shifter, crisper shift, longer batter life..Sram just has cool paddle shifting and removable batteries..I own both di2 ultegra 12speed and sram red 12speed etap..they're both cool but I prefer di2..

@LOGICAL-JAY I use axs but have never used etap axs. I've never run out of battery on it; just like my lights, I always charge the derailleur's battery after each ride. Di2 seems like more of a hassle to install than mechanical shifting, so I don't see the point of it.

Something about these videos make them like ASMR. I could listen to you read the phone book with those dulcet tones and soft J's. (For people born before phone books, a phone book is a thing everyone used to get with all the phone numbers before we had flatscreen TVs) So, I am the dummy who still doesn't get crash recovery mode. Is it electronic? What is the benefit, you fresh and it doesn't keep shifting? I'm going to go look this up in a phone book. So the manual part is you move it with your hand to a better gear for getting home if the battery is dead? I still fear Di2 like it's Skynet, I guess.

I'm ready to upgrade my drivetrain. Not sure if I want to switch to electronic shifting. If I do switch to electronic, I may change side over to sram (force). Anybody know if I can run a 12 speed Ultegra cassette/chain with force etap axs derailleur?
@danroberts007
@danroberts007 Жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure those are not compatible… like really, really, pretty sure but I can’t swear to it in court. You’re going to have to either go full Ultegra or full SRAM. I upgraded to Ultegra Di2 a year ago and have been very happy with it. I’ve only had my battery die on me once, lol. With SRAM, you have to charge the batteries more frequently but I can’t really see that as a major detractor. Electronic shifting is great; go for it!
@hansschotterradler3772
@hansschotterradler3772 Жыл бұрын
@@danroberts007 I appreciate your input. Is there a particular reason why you think they are not compatible? Is the center-to-center spacing of the cogs different?
@danroberts007
@danroberts007 Жыл бұрын
@@hansschotterradler3772 I just did a quick google search and to my surprise, it looks like they are more compatible than I thought. Yes, I was assuming that SRAM cogs were different from Shimano but that may not be the case. I'm nowhere near an expert on this, so double-check with someone you trust. I had also wondered if chain width was different (no specific reason why, it just occurred to me as a possibility) but I'm seeing articles saying their chains are compatible. You obviously have to match 11-speed to 11-speed or 12-speed to 12-speed, etc. but you may be able to use those Ultegra cassettes and chains after all.
