Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan is one of the 5 pillars of Islam. People with chronic conditions like diabetes can be exempt from fasting, but many choose to fast. Knowing your risk is key to a Healthy Ramadan with diabetes.

You don’t have to fast if you don’t want to. It must be a free choice.

The Muslim do NOT fast during Ramadan. They eat a LOT as soon as the sun sets. Real fasting STARTS after about 24 hours... we can measure it by measuring ketones. I have personally supervised real fasting (With, of course, close monitoring and regular laboratory backup) in at least 20 thousand patients over a period of 36 years and there is so far ZERO mortality. These included many diabetics. Actually, the effect of fasting on diabetes is very positive indeed. I have sent many a patient home having been able to come off medication, including insulin (Of course NOT in Type 1!) We define "real fasting" to go beyond about 30 hours, although the longest fast I have supervised was 45 days. Zero taste. Water only. That is real fasting. That is why I am proud of calling myself "The Fast Doctor".

Muslims (like some of the eastern traditions of Christianity) do religious fasting. You are describing a medical fast. One does not negate the other.

@@Dietconsulting Indeed dear Helen, that is how I understand it. But then if the advice was from a divine source it would have been given to benefit those who adhere... and for that one actually needs a medical fast.

@@frfr0123 I have sympathy with you dear Meryem but "prohibition" does not always (or it actually seldom) translate into reality. The number of times I treated proclaimed muslims for alcoholism, for example.... Anyway if you say I don't know what I am speaking "off", I was not speaking, I was typing. And that from personal observation, not from theory spoken by clerics. And Oh Yes, I am not ashamed of using my real name, hiding behind a pseudonym.

@@frfr0123 the majority perhaps.. depends on how you perform the survey.
