Speaking for myself, I would always use the one I carry if I am responding in a professional capacity. Not all BGL checkers work the same way, and I am always nervous using equipment I am not familiar with. I would also be suspicious about whether or not yours is operating properly - again, unfamiliar equipment. However, if I didn't have my own gear with me - I don't, for example, carry a vitals kit with me when I am going out for a burger - I would take a look at what you have, and consider what I see - even if your device showed that your glucose levels are fine, I would have confirmation that this person with decreased level of consciousness is diabetic (or has diabetic-like emergencies), and I would not rule it out based on the findings of your device.

The video is not just to demonstrate the treatments, but also to help students prepare for the provincial licensing exam by demonstrating a structured approach to patient care, and ensuring that ABCs are taken care of. At the time the video was made, licensing guidelines here in British Columbia required the examinee to take the first set of vital signs themselves. That, fortunately, has changed, and delegation of vital signs in this situation be not just acceptable, but encouraged as the best way to manage resources in this situation. That being said, however, I hesitate to encourage responders to rush. A full set of vital signs does not take an inordinate amount of time, even without the ECG monitor and NIBP, which EMRs do not have access to in BC. Thanks again for commenting - have a great day!
