My Ford Ranger had Vacuum Pulse Actuated hubs, which meant that if there is a vacuum leak, they will not lock: I learned this while duck hunting one year. I replaced them with Mile Marker 428 Manual Hubs, and never had a problem. I replaced the transfer motor on the Ranger last month, and now it works great. Had the same problem with the harness bracket not lining up, but didn’t feel like modifying the bracket, so I zip tied it to a wire loom. I miss the old days before this electronic junk! How have the Mile Markers held up for you? I have a '98 and am looking at avoiding problems with vac hubs.

@@brendanclark81 They work great and are easy to install. Sold the truck last year b/c the engine needed to be rebuilt.

I dismantled my brand new transfer case motor to have a look inside. The motor resistance is between 0.8 ohms and 1.3 ohms, depending on the position of the armature. It draws a lot of power: about ten amps. My old one was broken where the switch assembly is turned by a little pot metal tab. But the motor was still OK, even after 22 years.

What size are those three bolts Mount the shift motor to the transfer case?

How are the pins removed from the connector? I know you said they just pop back in and the center one you have to insert the little o ring but what is the procedure for removing them?

Once you remove the red inner locking ring, At the bottom of each pin(closest to the center of the plug). There is a black tab that holds the pin in place. Use a pick and gentle pull down on tab. Then pull wire from back to remove the wire. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

My 93 ranger with manual hubs. The 4x4 button on the dash doesn’t even light up anymore. Fuses are fine . Is this the likely culprit ?

Coubld be. But there is also the control modular you need to check. The control module tend to fail also. There are testing steps on the ranger forum that are very good.

I have the exact same truck. Your automatic locking hubs are not engaging. The vehicle manual says you can shift from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive at speeds up to 55mph and the hubs should engage. "If the vehicle is stopped while in 4X4 and the vehicle direction is reversed from the previous direction, the automatic locking hubs will momentarily disengage and reengage. The automatic locking hubs may click as they automatically engage in the new direction." I'm going to change mine to manual locking hubs. Will be replacing the transfer case motor this week. I am from South Africa I have a 4ltr Ranger 4x4, the battery accidentally went flat Reloaded battery, oh my, no 4x4, the 4x4 light and RFD lights keep running on the dashboard Nobody seems to can fix the problem PLEASE will you be able to help

How did you learn the motor is the problem? A friend of mine bought one Ranger just like yours and the 4x4 system does nothing. No lights on the dashboard , no relay clicking sound, is this motor the first thing to start looking at? thanks for your video

Go the therangerstation.com. they have a good tutorial on testing the system. But yes. I had no lights either. But it was because the motor was not responding. Your computer could be bad. That is a problem with these rangers. But before you go to that extreame. Check out the other parts first. Wire, buttons, motor. It's all laid out at the ranger station. Thanks for watching.

The first thing to check is fuse #3 under the hood. It's a big one. Then check fuses #20 and #25 in the main panel (just inside the cabin). Once in a while replacing a bad fuse solves your problem.

@@TheGarageEngineer My Regular 4x4 works, but my low doesn't. I think eventually I'm going to get Manual Hubs. It should solve it I think. If not I will get the transfer case motor.

@@Arcturian1111 I have been told going to manual hubs is a good option. If your truck is going into 4 high. Then you hubs must be locking. The reason it’s not going to 4 low could be the transfer case. Mine wasn’t going in to either low or high because of the hubs. Good luck.

@@rmyers5640 The 97 could be a vacuum issue. Check your vacuum lines going to the hubs and transfer case

@@Arcturian1111 My mechanic diagnosed the transfer case motor as failed. I replaced it and it now works. But I still don't have 4WD! The auto-locking hubs aren't actuating, so that's what I need to figure out now. :(
