Right from diagnosis, the journey of parenting a child with a disability is full of unknowns. Expectations are challenged, some just hope for the best, while others are diagnosed with a foreign medical term. In the first episode of our parenting series, our mums talk about their experience with diagnosis.
Made with the support from NZ On Air.

I love, love, love this series of videos! We are studying the effects of a disability on family members in my grad class, and all of the video resources provided were very outdated, so I searched on my own. I will be sharing these with my class!

I’m watching this and I’m like these moms are so lucky their kids walk and voluntarily touch them. I have a 4 yr old who cannot sit, talk or walk and it’s just hard.

That's a hellish situation my thought are with you. As weird as it sounds when I feel I can't carry this load anymore I think to myself at least we'll all be dead one day and none of this will matter anymore. This is not the life any of us had immagined.

😭😭😭 I don't know why but I'm in tears watching this I'm going through so much hell right now trying to figure out exactly what's wrong with my baby and not having a sufficient income to afford proper healthcare with one working adult -so they ( doctors) kind of push you to the side and blame the parents ...when I know my son has more than ADHD ...I've noticed a difference in the healthcare professionals from when I had a better insurance they would have all of these options and suggestions to try but now with me being the only person working and not being able to afford that insurance that used to have... I see the difference- how when you don't have a certain amount of money they're not willing to care, to help see what's really wrong with your child 💔💔 ...amazing moms and encouraging video thank you for sharing

Find yourself a way to come and live in Holland. We don’r have that here. Either find a man or find some other way. I know I would if I were in your shoes. Anything for my child.

@@miriamuSamaYou must be very young or very naive. People have other responsibilities to deal with also.

I’m a mother of two special needs children and I live with PTSD and agoraphobia. I have felt so alone for so long, I was bullied from chat rooms for single moms because my everyday was “too depressing “. I’ve reached out for mental health support since 2012 and they simply didn’t know what to do with me in terms of support groups. Can you even imagine? I called CHKD expecting that they had some type of counseling or support contacts for parents, given that they are a children’s specialty hospital but nothing

A may have a minor disability but thank God I'm still smart enough to fight against my mothers abuse and not fall for her and her boyfriends little games there abuse probably accually is the reason why I have a developmental disability in the first place but I'm grown up and don't fall for there little childish tricks

General Practitioner - here in New Zealand we use that term for a family doctor 😊

GP = General practitioner, it's sort of your family doctor, the one you'll first go to for any new issues, to ask for a referral to a specialist etc. I believe it's the UK/Australian term for what people in the US call your primary care doctor?
