Now that we finished up on taping and doing the test spot on the M3 it's time to actually start removing all the imperfections that we can. I used the Meguiars microfiber pad and the Rupes wool pad with the Rupes LHR15 Mk2, Rupes LTR 75 & Rupes HR81ML Bigfoot Nano. The paint, glass and trim all got polished in this episode.

Ive corrected my own and my dad’s bmw, both with shadow line trim. I took a few passes at the trim on both occasions and ended up settling for same reasons you experienced. I did have black paint transfer as well. The black doesn’t seem to be the same type paint or clear coated like the rest of the car. Maybe it’s like a single stage paint or something similar.

Looking good. I’d be careful with the shadow line. Pretty sure it’s single stage paint and that’s the black you’re seeing on the pads. I wish they would use clear with slow reducer to make those areas more resistant to swirling.

Have you thought about setting up a small vacuum system to blow the pad dust into? That way you know all the dust is sucked up and isn't getting reintroduced to the air every time you blow into the bag and you don't have to mess around with bags. Just take a small plastic trash can and cut a hole in the bottom, stick a vacuum tube on the bottom and lay it on an angle.

I'm really enjoying your channel and podcast Matt. I'd like to offer a tip to help take your correction up another level. I noticed your arm speed, the time it takes to cover X distance is inconsistent, and therefore the amount of paint removed in any given area will also be inconsistent.Try focusing on your arm speed, you should notice the time it takes to correct a vehicle become less, and results more consistent panel to panel. From there you can "chase" RIDS with a smaller machine so that only those area(s) have larger amounts of paint removed. - Joseph @ Smart Detail

Yeah the trim will be single stage, hence the paint transfer. Single stage is time consuming to get right, especially black. If your not 100% happy with them. I would suggest wet sanding them and spray clear coat on them.

Matt I really admire your work you love cars as much as I do one question can I use the same product to correct and polish the paint on the windows and trim
@bradensmith22
@bradensmith22 5 жыл бұрын
The window trim is likely anodized aluminum, that's why your pads are turning black. For heavier marring try Mother's wheel and mag polish with a 1" coarse foam pad on the nano on the rotary setting. Make sure you tape up the paint and probably the glass as well. Follow up the mag polish with a swirl remover or light compound on a medium foam pad. You might need a finishing polish as well. Remember that anodizing is MUCH harder than paint and even just regular untreated aluminum so using the rotary setting with lots of tool speed is important for efficiency when you're using a small pad. The extra hardness is also why you had to go so coarse with the abrasives and pads. Aluminum is much better at sinking heat than paint is so you shouldn't have to worry about putting too much heat into it as long as you are masked properly. Good luck!

Great video, quick few questions how often should you clean the pad when polished the car? Iv noticed you use compressed air after most passes? (I don’t have access to compressed air.) would you use the same pad for the whole car or switch between 2 or 3?
@Antimatter.
@Antimatter. 5 жыл бұрын
James Barker You can use a pad cleaning brush instead of air but air is best, the cleaner the pad the better the results, clean after every section pass , I think most pros will change the pads after every panel so you can use between 7-10 pads per car , I think there is a special tool that deep cleans pads so you don’t need so many on hand

I use 3-5 pads..i use compressed air on microfiber pads , but i also have a pad washer made by country lake that i use when im using foam pads (wash the pad after 2 uses). You have to prime your foam pad after every wash, to dry it after a wash i use a rotary into an MT bucket at around 2K rpm or you can use a DA on a Towel..I have been using this process since 2007 (the wash method) hasn't failed me yet.

Hey Matt quick question. I have a 458 in the garage and want to replace my dd f30 335 with either an f80 or e92 comp (both 6 speed). I guess the gt3 and 458 are comparable (both high revving NA), so which would you pick as a stable mate if you had one choice? e92 or f80?
@ObsessedGarage
@ObsessedGarage 5 жыл бұрын
The F80 is a great car. It looks great, has better tech, and is a better daily driver type car. But...the E92 has much more emotion. The quirks this car has make it what it is. I would choose the F80 is you commute a decent distance and the E92 if you don't.

Repaint is the only way man. It sucks. That particular spot without clear will end up with oxidation faster than the rest of the car. You could try to sand the spot and polish it to blend it with the rest of the car and apply ass loads of protection to that panel to stop it from oxidizing. I have a friend who bought a car with a missing spot of clearcoat. He blended it with the rest of the car and applies fresh sealant to the panel every 2-3 weeks or so. It works but it sucks balls.

Hey matt, I recently polished my Black g35 paint. it was beyond a nightmare. I was using a wool pad with meguiars ultimate polish. that combo caused the polish almost dry up and stick to the paint tremendously, i tried it on low speed, no luck. i couldnt even get the residue off with a microfiber cloth. I had to re-wet the whole car and buff off,. i then, had to go thru and use compound to get rid of the leftover haze. I then tried it with a foam pad and polish and it didn't give me an issue. But i noticed it didn't do as well of a job at getting rid of the scratches. Any advice would be appreciated.this was a nightmare at all levels lol

buying multiple pads, washing every time they get full of residue. leaving the wet/clean ones you just washed in front of a fan to try or a quick low heat tumble in the dryer and cycle through. Honestly, doing both a compressor blow out and a full cleaning of the pads often will be a lot of steps but will lead to longer pad life and better residue control. Be very mindful of how full of contaminants, exhausted polish, and clearcoat is building up in your pad. if you continue to use dirty pads you won't be correcting the surface.... more pads, more cleaning, better outcome with fewer, more efficient passes.

The "wavyness" you describe at 5:07 could possibly be some orange peel as BMW paint does have orange peel at times depending on how effective the factory Robot's paint the finish. I've actually been to the BMW factory in Munich, Germany and watched a couple different models being painted by the Robot's when I went on the tour of the factory which was pretty cool. Car Pro Denim pad with the right compound, in the right hands of course, as they are very aggressive, could possibly take the wavyness you describe out or smooth it down somewhat so it's not as noticeable. There is a video with a Detailer correcting a BMW (in Marina Blue colored paint) with a Car Pro Denim pad to fix factory induced orange peel. They did the entire vehicle and the results were stunning. Here is a link to that video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bpudra6GscXPfGw.html
