We are continuing our drive along the South coast of Iceland, as well as continuing VAN LIFE! Our targets for today are Diamond Beach, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, and Vatnajokull national park! After waking up at Skaftafell camping, our first stop of the day is the incredible Vatnajokull National Park, which contains Europe's LARGEST glacier - Vatnajokull itself! This glacier takes up 9% of Iceland. Yes, 9% of the entire country, how cool is that! We hiked to the Kristinartindar viewpoint (which is HIGHLY recommended by us if you want a moderate, half-day hike in Vatnajokull). We were able to see the glacier clearly from this spot. We continued along the trail towards Svartifoss - one of the most uniquely placed waterfalls that we've seen! Behind the waterfall are basalt columns, much like at Reynisfjara beach.
Our next stop was the famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, which is one of the most photographed spots in all of Iceland. For good reason! We spent a ton of time here admiring the pieces of glacier and the seals swimming between them. Diamond Beach (a black sand beach) is an easy next stop from Jokulsarlon, it's just across the street! We spent a while admiring the small pieces of glacier that had broken off as well as the uniqueness of the black sand itself. It's so easy to lose track of time in Iceland, especially because the sun doesn't really set during the summer. We rolled into our campground close to midnight to cook dinner and get ready for the next day!
We also talk a bit about our drone issues we've been having. 'Gimbal motor overload' has been the story of our lives for a few days now. It's working as of right now, so hopefully that continues!
