Diamond DA62, "Clear the runway immediately!"

Lining up on RWY25 at Augsburg (EDMA) ready for departure. The previously airborne Cessna152 (D-EKSD) was reporting to return to the runway 07 after an engine failure at 900 ft AGL. We were advised to vacate the runway immediately. The C152-pilot (probably the flight instructor) had made a 180° steep turn to the left and approached the runway in clean configuration, landing perfectly with quite a bid of pitch - the engine seemed to be running normally again. He suspected some water in the fuel tanks on the radio while vacating the runway and taxiing to the gas station - followed by the fire brigade ... Sunday, May 17th 2020 ... Sorry for my bad camera work! NO ATC-RECORDING PERMITTED IN GERMANY :-(

Thanks for sharing - and thanks for the detailed description below. Camera work is not bad at all, given the unusual situation. ATC recording would have been quite interesting, indeed :)

Wait the Cessna pilot pulled off the illusive Impossible Turn. Or was it not a complete engine shut down??? Cool video either way EDIT: Ooops sorry just saw the description

@@wolfgangkarner well the point on no 180 turns below 1000 agl is that you will hit the ground before completing the 180

@@MAGApepe you are absolutely right - he must have had some power left, otherwise he would not have made it to the runway - he made his 180 almost one and a half mile away from the strip www.flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/d-eksd?fbclid=iwar3_9qbvlh9n-lqx2ieofj3-2rwv-gs7rbm93gpvs3wop2p1ateodx-_cj0#2484036f

@@wolfgangkarner kool map,, ya looks like he was at least 1.5 miles from the end of the runway,, closer to 2 ,, i dont do meters thou lol,,,and you said it was a long runway so add another 1/2 mile of that after TO... so he would have to be well over 1000 agl by then i would think ,, even at a 500 ft/min climb,,,, could have just been running rough and did the right thing in a 180 then in this case ,, looks like he was over a city so never any good places to land there,, unless he was thinking of doing a sully in the hudson landing lol

Ob es wohl geil war? 🤔
@wolfgangkarner
@wolfgangkarner 4 жыл бұрын

YOUR KINDA HARD IN THOSE THROTTLES. SLOW DOWN YOUR PUTTING UNESSARY STRESS ON YOUR ENGINES.
@wolfgangkarner
@wolfgangkarner 4 жыл бұрын
You can't be quite serious! Powersetting is managed absolutely within the performance recommendations or even far below the maximum power rates and time limits. So the watercooled Diesel-engines cannot be overstressed or damaged at all. Maybe you should get into the handling recommendations more closely ... and don't forget the FADEC system in the background. There are hardly better and more robust engines on the market ... and the engines will be replaced after 1800 hours anyway ...
