Non-clinging Awareness

Күн бұрын

A guided three part meditation session focusing on anatta or no-self with Buddhist teacher Joseph Goldstein.
All the Buddhist traditions converge in one understanding of what liberates the mind. It is summed up very succinctly in one teaching of the Buddha: "Nothing whatsoever is to be clung to as 'I' Or 'mine.' Whoever has heard this has heard all the teachings. Whoever practices this has practiced all the teachings. Whoever realizes this has realized all the teachings." Nothing whatsoever is to be clung to as "I" or "mine." Non-clinging can be understood on two levels. The first level is non-clinging as a non-sectarian instruction for practice. What to do? Don't cling. There's no Buddhist school that says, "Cling." How to practice in the world? Don't cling. It hardly matters what form we build around that. We can not-cling in a Tibetan house, we can not-cling in a Zen house, we can not-cling in a Theravada house. The essence of One Dharma is the same. But non-clinging is not only an instruction of practice. On the second level, it is also a description of the awakened mind. If we want to know what enlightenment is like, what awakening is like, we can practice the mind of non-clinging, non-fixation, nonattachment to anything at all. It's the mind of open groundlessness.
~From One Dharma by Joseph Goldstein
Happiness is our natural state. Happiness is the natural state of little children, to whom the kingdom belongs until they have been polluted and contaminated by the stupidity of society and culture. To acquire happiness you don't have to do anything, because happiness cannot be acquired. Does anybody know why? Because we have it already. How can you acquire what you already have? Then why don't you experience it? Because you've got to drop something. You've got to drop illusions. You don't have to add anything in order to be happy; you've got to drop something. Life is easy, life is delightful. It's only hard on your illusions, your ambitions, your greed, your cravings. Do you know where these things come from? From having identified with all kinds of labels!
~ Anthony de Mello
We say, "That is a rose", rapidly look at it and go on. By giving it a name, we think we have understood it; we have classified it and think that thereby we have understood the whole content and beauty of that flower. By giving a name to something, we have merely put it into a category and we think we have understood it; we don't look at it more closely. If we do not give it a name, however, we are forced to look at it. That is we approach the flower or whatever it is with a newness, with a new quality of examination; we look at it as though we had never looked at it before. Naming is a very convenient way of disposing of things and of people - by saying that they are Germans, Japanese, Americans, Hindus, you can give them a label and destroy the label. If you do not give a label to people you are forced to look at them and then it is much more difficult to kill somebody.
~Jiddu Krishnamurti
Indeed we live very happily, not hating anyone among those who hate; among men who hate we live without hating anyone.
Indeed we live very happily, in good health among the ailing; among men who are ailing we live in good health.
Indeed we live very happily, not striving (for sensual pleasures) among these who strive (for them); among those who strive (for them) we live without striving.
~Dhammapada verses 197-199
Throughout the world, beings suffer.
May all beings be happy.
May all beings be free of suffering.
Free from attachment and sentimentality,
May my mind be a refuge for all beings,
May all beings develop their minds in a wholesome way.
The gift of the Dharma excels all gifts;
The taste of the Dharma excels all tastes;
Delight in the Dharma excels all delights.
The eradication of Craving overcomes all sorrow.

This video has to be the best guided meditation video. It explains the impermanence and emptiness along with awareness. The whole purpose of meditation is to lose your sense of self.

The illusion is right on the surface. The feeling of self is just that - an impermanent 'feeling'. The idea of mind being like movie theatre is very useful. Often my thoughts play a horror movie. But I can watch them as just another movie, and not identify with their changing and insubstantial nature. Freedom!

F.I.S.H Paragraph 3. The body of every human being is composed of eight material elements: The five gross material elements - solids, liquids, gases, fire/heat and ether/space and the three subtle material elements - the mind, the intellect and the ego. Each of the five gross material elements corresponds to one of the senses of the body. E.g. in outer space where there is a vacuum (ether), one can detect sounds via the ear, whereas solid matter can be seen with the eyes, felt with the sense of touch, tasted with the tongue, smelt with the nose and heard with the ear. Beyond these eight material elements is the true self - the eternal soul, which pervades the entire body. That explains why we say "This is my hand" "This is my mind". Who is the owner of the body? It is us, the anti-matter, the inextinguishable spiritual spark, the soul ! We, the soul, are eternally immutable and are by nature situated in unadulterated bliss and in perfect knowledge of the absolute truth. This purity has been “covered” and corrupted by sin (or selfishness). The body is merely a temporary vehicle for this ever-existing spiritual entity, for as Lord Jesus Christ said "The body counts for nothing - it is the spirit which gives life". One who considers himself to be nothing more than a physical (and mental/intellectual) body is no more intelligent than an ignorant ass or cow. To read the remaining thirty-nine paragraphs of “A Final Instruction Sheet for Humanity”, which the God of all gods has graciously given to His Prophet on Earth, email: the1965@hotmail.com with the acronym “FISH” in the subject field.

The watcher is the Consciousness which is nothing special but one of the creation of Nature(Causation, Factors, Law of nature). There is no I or Me that is the watcher. The watcher is inter-be with all elements in the Universe. Dhamma seeing Dhamma. Nature seeing Nature. There is no I.

LUNA Hi Luna, check out some teachings on Mindfulness Meditation. It helped me no end when I was in the same place as you and I have never looked back since. I recommend very much this book by Bhante Gunaratana; Mindfulness in Plain English. It will teach you all the basics on how to meditate and how to use the mind more skillfully in day-to-day life.

Hahaha, Buddha use soul only for mere people. For true, Buddha always taught about Not-Self. There is no separate self. Never, never have a separate self or Atman. Anatta is the Ultimate Reailty. Even Nirvana is not (separate)self.

Thank you so much. thoughts are spam mail, don't know where they come from or how to stop them. It's the same as when I chant, the ego gives a running commentary, like a bad back seat driver as it tries to hijack one's spiritual seeking, pretending it is in fact doing the seeking. Wise to it's tricks now.

Who's the knower - according to Vedanta, it's consciousness. You can't see it directly, only through what is illuminated by it. Only question: is it eternal, or just as temporary as body-mind? I want to find out ;)
@kampagang9236
@kampagang9236 5 жыл бұрын
Even the knower is impermanence. Consciousness is impermanence. Nothing is impermanence. Except the Law of Nature which called Dhamma, DhammaDhatu or Tathata = Suchness. Suchness is the same meaning with Emptiness, Nothingness, Voidness and at the same time is Allness, Wholeness, Oneness, Interconnectedness.

[SN 3.196] At one time in Savatthi, the venerable Radha seated himself and asked of the Blessed Lord Buddha: “Anatta, anatta I hear said venerable. What pray tell does Anatta mean?” “Just this Radha, form is not the Soul, sensations are not the Soul, perceptions are not the Soul, assemblages are not the Soul, consciousness is not the Soul" ABCEF = not-X (atman) is not a denial of X......fallacy of composition kiddies

This is good as explanation of the meditation but not good as a guided meditation itself. It's too intellectually stimulating. No self is found easily, there's no need for all the fancy words and explanations if one just wants to be and feel
