Very few women in history have been able to combine their virtuosity with their sexuality in their music as successfully as Diana Kroll does. Other worthy comparisons are Billie Holiday, Deborah Harry, and Donna Summer. It's hardly a requirement for success but when it does work, the results are unique and the feeling is magic.

Very true. Incredibly rare to have the total package. She is a looker, but that voice and those chops and that true jazz feel! She and that band ferociously swing on some of those numbers and I’m sure Nat King Cole was smiling up there.

You are so right. The drummer is so good, as is the guitarist and bassist. But that drummer has so many tricks up his sleeve. Ans she is fantastic. This band is indeed the tops of their professions in this genre. Pros on top of their game.

(Musician for 61 years, home recordist since 1974, then a semi-pro, and then a pro engineer since 1982) I've listened to this concert more than any other, ever in my life. Diana just gets, jazz, and she's done more for the genre than anyone in recent history, Also, with her recordings, even her live ones, we have the added advantage of hearing these great old songs with the benefit of modern recording capabilities rather than always great but less beautiful recordings from the 40's, for example, with all instruments here and her vocals wonderfully recorded, with all "signals", (the engineering term for individual sounds), painstakingly miced with top shelf modern mics and pickups, (Thousands of dollars. Each.), and then expertly mixed-down in excellent balance with each other, in modern recording studios. Her recordings then, are only hindered by the abilities of our own home audio systems. While she is arguably not in the top ten jazz pianists of all time, (I'd put her in there, somewhere), the fact that she does get jazz makes her one of my favs to listen to. But, it is her vocals that keep me coming back for more. She not only has an amazingly wide variety of vocal "textures" at her disposal, (think soft and sweet, raspy, deep from the throat or even a bit nazal in quality, etc., etc.,) she is also expert at "phrasing". This is a thing that we only hear with soloists, be they instrumenalists or vocalists, and in an inprovisational setting as jazz mostly adheres to, that provides for us much of the "feeling", that these musicians are able to produce for us in a song. To understand phrasing, listen to the way that any soloists may come in slightly behind the beat, or ahead of it, and then reaquire the beat, but in this recording, it is Diana who shows off her talents, as a vocalist, with her expert use of vocal phrasing, more than any other musician here. Listen to the way that her vocals become slighly lazy at times, or right atcha, sometimes,"converstional", as in less emphasis on hitting notes perfectly, at others, morphing into Scat. (think doowapdeedo). Here, in these abilities, is where she really shines as a Jazz vocalist, and moreso than any other female vocalist we listen to today, IMHO. Also, Jazz is a biproduct of the blues, and Diana shows off her complete understanding of that original form, often, and with yet more expertise. She wants to, she can, and so she does. The Blues is a simple thing for any jazz musician, as Jazz is a far more sophisticated genre, an extension of the Blues, but I always love to hear it in Jazz, just as a nod to Jazz's root form, and the for the extra feeling that it provides to any Jazz recording. Here again, Diana Krall shows off her understanding of all of it, with ease, as she seemlessly morphes from one genre to the other, making her voice a wonderfull and never boring thing to hear, again and again and again. But, if you want to raise up the next Diana Krall in your own home, know that it is in truth her training as a Classical Concert Pianist that enables her to deliver for us, to this degree of excellence. Once a musician has that under his or her belt, the rest is pretty easy. That said, I'm SO glad to see so many here, who appreciate what they hear, from Diana Krall, regardless of your desire or ability to understand it at a technical level. There are no requirments that exist or are needed, , nor should there be, in order to become one who loves and appreciates great music. I've only provided this comment for those who want to understand more precisely why they love what they love about Diana Krall, in order to perhaps appreciate this and other recorings, even more. But this is simply wonderfull music, and to know that so many of you love it, gives me hope for humaity. ;) !! Thanks to these fantastic musicians and engineers, and through your terrific comments here, you have shown that you absolutely do know what great music should sound like. " n' Deed You Do" ! ! Thanks for that. Cheers! N

That is the most fantastic comment I've ever heard! 👏👏👏 I absolutely agree with your view on Diana. Many instrumentalists (like me, for example) take their talent and career very seriously, as well as many vocalists. My mind was taken away for a while when I first heard this concert on a CD, when she uses phrasing, as you mentioned, with the melody of the piano and her smooth balance of the alto vocals. One of my favorites that caught me as a vocalist is "Maybe You'll Be There", because her singing is delicate and relaxing with the tune. But, my favorite when she's a pianist is "Devil May Care". She improvises and makes great chords very quickly while joining the beat. All the other songs she performed are phenomenally exceptional. As a pianist myself, I do admire and am inspired by Diana's talent. Your comment, Neil Jennings, said it all. Thank you once again for sharing this. "s' Wonderful"!

@@BJDJ Thank you good sir ! It's easy to be passionate about Diana Krall! No? I'm sure you'll agree. She just makes amazingly tasteful use of all the many tools she has in her toolbox, more than any other jazz singer I can remember, and then, she makes it look easy ! Krall's "Maybe You'll be There" is haunting, dripping with the grief one feels after losing a lover, and one of the best tunes I've ever heard, ever, and her version of "Devil May Care", is astonishing, and on that list as well, lyrically, it is a perfect antedote to the Blues, which I also love dearly, but between the Blues, Country, and the always depressing clip-clop/rapcrap we're exposed to today, the lyrics to "Devil May Care" are most welcome, and refreshing. It's great to hear from another musician who get's that too! Thanks again. Two more things deserve mention here; the first being the performance of the orchestra. I've never heard one used to greater advantage, and the arrangments are just stunning, but always remaining.. modest, humble, so in keeping with the songs themselves, and a perfect, relaxing, laid back and excellent back drop to the star of the show, never in the way, never overbearing, it is an expertly well trained livng, breathing thing, and a HUge benfit to this recording. Wow. Just Wow. Hans Oberman? You are a musical genius. And the other thing that deserves mention is the songs themselves. For those here who are unaware of it, these songs go way back, many were written for Broadway, others written by Jazzmen in the age of Billy Holiday And Duke Ellington, the age where it was understood that a woman's voice, most often being higher on the register, had the ability to "cut through the mix", as we say in the biz, in other words able to overpower the band just a bit, and so, to make the lyrics stand out clearly. Men's voices were easilly overpowered by pianists left hands, guitars, many other instruments and the band or orchestra themselves in the days before better use, (or use at all) of mics and amplification, simply because of where they sat, in the register. ( Remember the guitarists of those days? Pre-amplification? lol! They had those big bodied rhythm guitars with F-Holes, and the right arms of a block layer lol, from just WAiling on those things, just trying desperately, to be heard over the band, acoustically..) Lyrics were a HUge part of these songs from "The American Songbook", as Diana shows plainly in "Live in Paris", and this is why guys can't sing a great many of these songs, without sounding silly. These lyrics were mostly written for a woman to sing. Imagine, if you will, a guy singing "Love Letters" for instance, "kissing the name that you sign" ?? lol. Just wouldn't work right, and for good reason. The lyrics, mattered, so they wrote them for women to sing. So I'm greatly appreciatve of your comment BJ, as I am for all of the terrific comments posted here. I once had a music teacher who told me that the popularity of genres in music are always on a pendulum, and swing from one extreme to the other, (think Punk rock, {which I love} on one end, and maybe rap on the other, {which I don't}), but often times the pendulum rests, although sometimes briefly, at the bottom, where jazz and classical music, the best that we have, lie. Jazz and classical music are always there for us, always enduring, at the bottom of the swing, while people get bored by the extremes and then the extremes simply fade away, creating a time of appreciation for the best music that we have. Perhaps that is what's coming. The return of turntables and the clear appreciation for Jazz that we see in this thread, give me great hope for still more appreciation of these most often overlooked (and for the most part, rediculously underpaid) Jazz musicians, who are simply the most sophisticated and most well accomplished, and so the most interesting, musicians we have today, or ever have had in the history of American music. They deserve our appreciation, (and money), most, but receive the least. No other musicians, for the most part, can play this music in a trio or quartet, due mostly to the impovisational nature of the art form. It is that improvisational aspect, that gives these songs life. For that matter, when was the last time you saw a classical musician doing a concert, without charts? lol. Then watch Anthony Wilson, and Diana Krall just play the bejeezuz out of their instruments, from an educated but invisible, to most of us, place, in their amazing minds ! Ok I'll shut up now. You and I could obviously go on forever. LOL. Thanks BJ. Neal

I didn't know Obama was such a great bass player and one of the most enjoyable to watch. Thank you John Clayton! Anthony Wilson is tasty and cooks. Diana is just wow. Super concert.

Just LOVE her natural delivery! Awesome concert, thank you so much for sharing, perfect! When you see a live concert like this, and the need for a conductor, it just makes you realize just how musicians were involved.

Recorded late in 2001, she revels her excellent piano. Her voice is fine and is now a jazz standard. Her piano is truly virtuoso.

I was a student and my room mates would hear me play her albums over and over again. Thanks for the memories.
