ABOUT SACRED COW: www.sacredcow.info/
It’s commonplace today to blame meat for everything from cancer to global warming. We’re rightly scared about our health and our world. But are cattle being unfairly scapegoated? At Sacred Cow, we question the following:
• Should we eat meat at all?
• Is there a “best” diet for humans? Or is there a spectrum of optimal human nutrition?
• Can meat be part of a sustainable food system?
• Can a sustainable food system exist without meat and animal contributions, both nutritionally and environmentally?
• How important are ethics in the story of human nutrition and sustainability?
In our increasingly polarized world, where it’s all or nothing, this book is here to introduce some much-needed nuance. If you’re an ethical omnivore concerned about the environmental impact of your food choices, this site is for you. If you’re a vegetarian or vegan but are considering eating meat again, this site is for you. If you’re familiar with how cattle can be part of a regenerative food system, but still worried red meat will kill you, this site is for you. If you’re open to science, then this site is definitely for you.
The Sacred Cow Project explores our relationship to the food we eat and offers a different view on the future of food production. We publish a blog, produce podcasts featuring food producers and health experts, and run insightful social media posts. The book, Sacred Cow: The Case for (Better) Meat and the documentary film will launch in 2020. Our hope is to create a new dialogue examining our cultural bias against cattle, pointing out the importance of red meat to our food system and how well managed grazing animals are one of our best solutions to repair the damages of our industrial agricultural system.

I watched Sacred Cow just a couple of days ago and loved it. I only wish I could get my daughter to watch it. I'm in Brisbane and she's in Melbourne. We're a bit far apart.

We're doing our best! But such is the case for non-profit organizations. We appreciate anything to help get the word out and share the hope of a regenerative future!

* This is an excellent and important film. I don't think your on-line publicity is working optimally. It should be multi-million viral by now. Thank-you to the filmmaker.

The meat and milk from animals fed entirely by grazing provide just 1% of the world's protein. The more land that farming occupies, the less is available for forests, wetlands, savannahs and wild grasslands, and the greater is the loss of wildlife and the rate of extinction. All farming, however kind and careful and complex, involves a radical simplification of natural ecosystems. This simplification is required to extract something that humans can eat. Farming inflicts an ecological opportunity cost. Land use is the most important of all environmental questions. It is the issue that makes the greatest difference to whether terrestrial ecosystems and Earth systems survive or perish. The more land we require, the less is available for other species and the habitats they need, and for sustaining the planetary equilibrium states on which our lives might depend.

There's an assumption here that grazing displaces wildlife habitat. In feedlot scenarios, yes that would be the case, but in the scenarios discussed here it's quite the opposite. Properly-managed grazing *creates* wildlife habitat rather than displacing it, and it's entirely possible (heck, it's part of what we teach in Holistic Planned Grazing) for livestock and wildlife to co-exist on the same landscape... just as animals have intermingled (e.g. on the African savannahs) for millennia. At our Savory Hub in Kenya, the Maasai are using Holistic Planned Grazing with cattle to increase productivity of the Enonkishu Conservancy, and in doing so they have increased forage availability which has drastically increased the numbers of wildlife there (not just grazers, but also predators.)

Cue the comments from people who’ve read stuff online but never farmed a day in their life. 🙄

One thing struck me in these very informative dietetic discussions. Meat was not differentiated into what meat from a well managed grass fed regen farm vs a Big Ag feedlot does for you. I know Diana was preaching to the Savory choir and thus the meat she was possibly visualizing was a Savory brand. But I think we should start being very careful about differentiatng or defining what the source of the meat is that will yeild such and such great benefits. Otherwise we regen supporters risk being looked upon as cultish...."Our way is Nature's Way and look at the reams of data to back it (all true)". But what we REALLY need to attain is turning the table on feedlot sourced meat and push them into being seen as the evil cult with no real trully healthy long term sustainable proof to validate their "science" of raising livestock. It comes down to what our recently deceased bro fom Oz said ( and I do plead guilty to adding a bit of finger pointing).....what type of livestock you talking about, managed livestock or "conventional" livestock....managed livestock is happy livestock, conventional livestock is a cult of drug addicts.

I don't much mind us turning into a cult. Veganism is turning into a cult and it's growing out of hand. We have to beat it or we're going to lose.
