What I love about the portrayal of their relationship is that they love each other and they like each other, but they fundamentally can't *understand* each other. And, in the end, love isn't enough.

Love is more than enough, Mr peanut Butter is naive and Diane is very proud that it was the problem. It's been times where both of them have completely disregarded each other's emotions to prove a point to themselves. Hopefully the breakup helped them grow as individuals.

I didn't really register this until somebody pointed it out to me… but he bought fake books. The whole *point* of the library scene in Beauty and the Beast is that she loved reading and never had enough books, and he *knew* that, and so he gave her all the books she could want. And Diane is a writer- she likes books! I'm not saying that she wouldn't have reacted badly if he'd done it with real books as well, but the fact that he didn't even realise why she wanted it… I'm not saying I hate PB, but I can't blame Diane here.

The worst thing about this, for me, is that Mr PB probably thought that this was nothing like the previous gestures he'd done, because it was something that was important to Diane, something she'd held close to her for years. In a way, he probably thought it would make up for all of the over the top surprises he'd put together for her
@PlanetZoidstar
@PlanetZoidstar 5 жыл бұрын
Exactly, the other things Mr. PB did were things HE would enjoy (besides that day doing things he knew Dianne enjoyed, until he did the surprise party which she really didn't like), and didn't really consider if Dianne would like them or not. This he went out of his way to do for HER, knowing it was always her dream to have and that it was important to her. Far as he knew this is exactly what she dreamed to have one day, so he had no way her reaction to getting what she always wanted would be anything but positive.

She has been telling him since the first season that she dislikes big gestures, she has told him the same thing over and over again. He had a way of knowing, but MPB is incapable of listening to others, he just hears what he wants to hear and ignores it if it goes against what he wants (see: almost every single interaction between Bojack and him).

I think PB always had his own "Mr Peanutbutter" way of doing things for Diane even though they always missed the mark bad. Like for her surprise party when he turned the office into a ballpit because Diane always wanted a "ballroom". Of course that doesn't trump the fact that she doesn't like big parties and grand gestures (or that he got the wrong type of ballroom)

I think this Bojack quote from season five sums up what Mr. Peanutbutter did wrong in this relationship, particularly season four: “And in TV, flawed characters are constantly showing people they care with these surprising grand gestures. And I think that part of me still believes that's what love is. But in real life, the big gesture isn't enough. You need to be consistent, you need to be dependably good.” Mr. Peanutbutter can get Diane all of the fancy belle rooms in the world, but he consistently ignored her when he ran for governor just because he wanted more people to like him. The grand gesture isn’t an instant fix, especially when your wife hates grand gestures.

Red Link Tbh I wasn't really expecting it to end like that. I mean, you start from season one where you say "oh well, Bojack and Diane are going to end up together at the end of this season" but the it doesn't happen, she and PB keep staying together. Two more seasons later and they're still going strong, especially after the whole Labrador peninsula episode stuff. Then in season 4 you start to see the cracks but every time they seal and you are so used to seeing em together that you don't really think things are changing... writers even put this whole Hawaii thing to make em look even more bound than before despite all that happened and then... Bam!, this scene is unexpected and that's why it hit so hard

Right everyone is going to criticise Diane for how she reacted here but I don't think either one of them is at fault and I'm going to explain why. Mr Peanutbutter and Diane have been married for a few years now, and we've seen it has not gone well. However, EVERY time Mr. Peanutbutter makes a big gesture like this, she reacts badly and tells him she doesn't like big gestures. She has told him over and over again that she doesn't like it yet he still does it. It also overlaps with the idea of Diane's entire mentality that she explained all the way back in season 1 and 2 - she says if you spend the whole time chasing something, then you get it, then you feel nothing. She didn't want the library because it was just that, something she could dream about, something that filled her day with hope and helped her through her struggle. Yet here we are, her dream is real, it's not her's anymore, it's happened and now she's filled with emptiness. Mr. Peanutbutter should have known but didn't think about it, because that's who he is. He believes in big gestures of love and appreciation. Mr. Peanutbutter and Diane are two good people who love each other but are fundamentally incompatible. And that's why it's so tragic.

@Bewan Honestly I don't get why certain people are ragging so much on Diane's behavior. Now to be fair this show does portray its main cast in a variety of ways challenging the viewer to be like "How much longer can I like or tolerate this character's behavior?'.If those said others can't stand Diane that's fine they don't have to like her of course.However I'm in the area of those who sympathize with Diane despite how stubborn/selfish she can be in her own right.The show has gone out of its way not only in the other previous seasons to show how much Bojack and herself are similar in unhappy self-destructive behavior aspects but especially here in season 4 where Peanutbutter and Diane's marriage is ripping itself apart from the inside out. Peanutbutter and Diane were both symbolically committing what Bojack has done many times in the past with using sex to mask their deep-troubling issues like this won't make their marriage feel so empty anymore just as Bojack had MANY one night stands with women to feel "loved" as if it would take away his deep depression. Diane finally admitting how tired of squinting through all the crap their marriage has given them both emotionally and seeing Mr. Peanutbutter's sad look of realization knowing what they're both going to have to do next I felt my heart slowly tearing itself up inside given how hard they've been working to keep this marriage afloat even though it has been built up like crazy for this punchline to occur finally.Sadly the time for their divorce has come I feel. Bojack's line in season 2 "Maybe she left to get away from her awful marriage." has an ironic tune to it in general reflecting on Mr. P's and Diane's marriage throughout the series.While the statement Bojack said may have been obviously uncalled for in a number of areas considering they did love each other genuinely and weren't poisonous towards each other until season 4 reared its ugly head I gotta say on some level Bojack had a point.

The thing PB said about his ex wives really hits me because it made his character make a lot more sense. I always thought that PB was the problem in those two marriages, because he fell in love too fast with anyone and they left him because they couldn't take everything he does the way Diane did. But it seems that his first wife was an obsessive and manipulative person, and the second was kinda abusive and didn’t care that much about what PB wanted (at least that's what i get from that flashback episode where we see a little of that marriage). But aparently they eventually got bored of him and left, and he's afraid the same will happen with Diane so he does everything he can to treat her as well as possible so she doesn't get tired and find someone else, which isn't the best in contrast to Diane's problem with big gestures. I never thought Mr. Peanutbutter of all the characters of the show would have confidence issues. I always assumed his last two marriages didn't affect him but they did

Mr Peanutbutter knows how to please normal people and he excells at it, like a dog that always knows how to make you happy. But Diane doesn't need a playmate, she needs someone that understands and shares her unhapiness and cynicism, like Bojack. Diane is just tired of rationalizing the good and bad in their relationship. She stays with him because he's a nice person and that's all. MPB is a nice, positive, generous, energetic, and caring person. However, his extreme tendency to do irrational things, only listening to half of what Diane says or just not listening at all (which is worse than refusing to listen my personal opinion), constantly ignoring seriously bad things instead of dealing with it, and constantly smothering her with gifts makes the good parts almost nothing. Diane just can't overlook MPB's massive flaws and only focus on his good qualities anymore. In real life, it can get tiring.

The one line that shows, to me, that Mr. PB really does not understand Diane in general, and this dream of hers in particular is this one: "Do you know how much it costs to get 5000 _fake_ books?" Fake books. Not real books. Not a real escape-from-reality comfort corner, not a real space of your own, but an imitation thereof, filled with imitation books. The superficially equivalent stuff, lacking any depth. Diane is an incredibly sheltered, private, walled-in person, who needs to retreat into her own corner, and Mr. PB is all action and chipper and noise. While I sympathise with Diane a lot more here, she is obviously also at fault, but these two people just fundamentally can't understand each other (or at least, PB can't understand Diane) . For God's sakes, people, he put in fake books. It's all a fucking superficial facade, because the distracting noise is all Mr. PB can conceptualise. He isnt wrong to do that, and people who are that type of nihilist are usually happier, but he and Diane are just not talking the same language.

I legitimately had to do a double take on that line. I thought I had heard him wrong, because...well, he couldn't have, right? Except he did. And I felt terrible for both him and Diane at the same time. I agree with you wholeheartedly. As much as they might want to, and as much as they try, a (romantic, anyways) relationship between these two just can't work like how either of them want it to. That doesn't make them bad people, of course. But the fact of the matter is that, if they keep on their current course, then a happy marriage will be the farthest thing from their reality.

In all honesty, she hardly talks about her interests with him, except for a few fleeting moments. So how on earth is he supposed to assume what she likes? That's why, when Diane talked about the room, he thought that it was something he could approach to get closer to her. Yes, he could've gone to a prestige library and randomly picked some out but hey, with fake books this way the image of the room is kept looking good and over time Diane could have gradually filled the shelves up with real books of her own choice.

I was watching "Bojack Horseman" passionately throughout my relationship, and we ended up getting married while the show was still going. When Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter had this big fight, I was watching at a time when my own marriage was already on the rocks less than a year into it (long story, not telling it here). When Diane seemed to reach out to Mr. Peanutbutter, I couldn't help but connect it to my own situation, and it felt nice that they could still bounce back from such a harsh argument. But then when she started to cry and say she was giving up, I reacted almost the same way as Mr. Peanutbutter did. For the record, I ended up getting separated, and our divorce was finalized last year. I don't regret walking away from a relationship that wasn't working out, but I'll never forget that moment, watching this scene, getting this awful feeling that I was looking at my own inevitable future in a way.

I was still friends with her at the time season 4 came out, and related our relationship to Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter's. If you have a relationship like this, do not drag it out. Be honest with yourself and end it, you will save yourself a lot of heartbreak.

Diane "squints" their marriage because she was trying to make the best out of the worst situations, and got tired of doing so. They're not compatible, they don't take time to understand one another and a few times their beliefs clashed with each other to a point of disaster (such as the flacking incident). If they had communicated to each other and be more understanding to each other's feelings and desires while setting up boundaries, there would've been more foundation to their relationship.
@maeerie8175

I think you can try to build a foundation but you can only do so much. You shouldn’t try to squeeze yourself into a place that doesn’t really fit to make a relationship work, that’s gonna take a toll on you. You can’t fully change your beliefs or personality or way you communicate or deal with things just like that, and you should try to find a person that suits them. Ofc you’ll always have to put in work tho.

@@maeerie8175 I get it, but I was meaning for Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter, not in general. I'd rather not talk about relationships in general as there are different context to apply to general relationships and honestly, that's a headache to explain in details. But to what I was meaning to say (I'm not always good with words) was, if they wanted their relationship to work, both sides had to work on themselves and fix their flaws at least to a reasonable degree, and be understanding to one another or at least find a common ground. Also how well you communicate and compromise with your significant other is also key, but in the case of Diane and Mr. PB, they wind up butting heads. Even in the episode where Mr. PB proposed to Diane, she showed doubts of being married to him. If Diane and Mr. PB really wanted to make it work then both would have to change their problem areas, but nobody can do that unless they really try to make the effort. They were just not good for each other, but they got married anyway and wasted those years on a toxic relationship. At least from what I could tell with Diane and Guy, Diane showed struggles with herself and Guy was patient with her, he encouraged her and tried to build her up. That's a healthy relationship, versus her relationship with Mr. PB who does whatever he wanted without forethought and puts himself into a cycle in regards of his relationships--all of which were unhealthy as it showed that to him, his ex-wives were expendable as soon as they grew bitter and boring, he moves onto the next woman who comes along who's new and fun.

He believes what he wants is what others must want too. Much like a cute dog hoping to be pet constantly but is found bothersome instead. As for Diane and BJ, they are compatible but their narcissistic traits and views of life, made it impossible for them to really fall in love with each other. This season was very interesting for Diane and Princess, as in it is the complete opposite of what is expected. Instead of Princess saving BoJack's ass he saved hers. Diane spent the first few episodes trying to call BoJack for help or assurance and ends the season heavily damaging her marriage(seemingly to the point of divorce.) Lastly BoJack overall has put in more effort to change himself for the better than these two this season. In short, they turned into BoJack.

Bojack is the sad depressed guy that is self destructive and unpredictable. People think being happy stops you from being those things. What Diane and PC realized this season is that happiness isn't simple and that you can't fake it. So when everything was going to shit for them it was easy to turn to Bojack because who else could reflect how much they felt life sucked? Mister PeanutButter is literally the walking embodiment of the phrase "ignorance is bliss" and Ralph is the greeting card guy who thinks life moves like a bunch of greeting card cliches. Bojack is the only thing that is "real" to them. Everyone else is sickeningly happy and optimistic.

This scene is so especially tragic because they both genuinely want to help and please each other and want to be happy themselves. They're trying so hard (especially Diane) and the more they try the more it falls apart. They just want to love each other and are frustrated that they don't work as a couple despite everything they've done. Not only that, but they had a lot riding on the marriage as a way to fix the mistakes of their past and it blew up in both their faces. Not to mention that the writer's give the viewer's more insight this season to Diane's character. She was happy being at the motel with Mr.Penutbutter perfectly content with the fact they where spending there short vacation there instead of Hawaii. In the episode where she was interviewing PB's ex wife at the nice restaurant she ordered a grilled cheese and while it was shown for humor, to me it showed how Diane loves the little things in life and it really shows the juxtaposition between her and Mr.Peanutbutter. Because as we've seen in former seasons where she tried to help in third world countries and write about important topics all while living a... I don't want to say humble but average lifestyle she miminilistic. All awhile Mr.Peanutbutter is doing spontaneous and outrageous things with Todd like starting a business and running for governor. They are both fundamentally different. And while in some ways they're opposite personalitys helped them complete each other and make them compatible. Yeah, and Mr.Peanutbutter is trapped in this mindset that he has to keep doing more and more for Diane to get her to stay. His ex-wives seemed to care waaaaay more about material possessions and fame than they ever cared about spending time with him. This most likely is driving him to constantly go out of his way to spoil Diane, and I doubt he genuinely believes her when she says she rather spend time with him than get material possessions. Having been divorced and abused because he wasn't enough, he most likely has a lot of anxiety issues that haven't been addressed. That's why she keeps calling him during that year he went missing. She really loves Mr Peanutbutter, but she can't fully support him. Diane was in the right. At first I didn't understand but looking back on everything I understand were she was coming from now. To those who still don't get it I suggest you look up "Nice Guy Syndrome" and maybe even listen to some lectures by Dr. Robert Glover. Mr. Peanutbutter is a nice guy, but he dosen't understand that a nice guy isn't the same as a good man. In fact a nice guy can be a very punchable villain once you spotted him. Don't get, me wrong, I'm not saying PB is pure evil. I think there is some good in him, but he's not healthy to be with either. He really is just as selfish and manipulative as Bojack. Listen carefully to what he is saying in this clip. He isn't doing these grand gestures because it makes his wife happy. He's doing this because he's afraid she's going to leave him so he wants to "manipulate" her into doing what he wants. These gestures are designed to give the appearance to other peoeple that he's treating her well, but they really serve as a way to guilt Diane and persure her into doing what he wants. Grand Gestures stop being romantic if you're not listening to your wife, only doing it hoping to get a specific responses from people or just doing it only to fill your own ego. That behavior in real life gets overbearing, can creep out the woman your with and is a narcissistic form of control. Its actually similar to Bojack gaslighting Todd to try to stop him from moving out in season 1. Like Bojack, PB is trying to plant the idea of "staying" in his targets head because he has insecurities and dose it in a way that he can look like a good guy who cares for person he's manipulating. This isn't even anything new with his character either. Go back to season 1. He stoled the credit for stealing the D for Diane, made a big public event out of it, almost made a movie about how much he loves Diane......All to pressure Diane into marrying him. So he lied to her, invited a mob of people to cheer on his grand gestures to put public per pressure on her, and started to make a movie celebrating "himself", all to pervent Diane from acting on cold feet. She was clearly a little hesitant at times but now the world was watching them. If she had backed out then everyone would be angery with "her" instead of PB who put their relationship on display in attempt to block her from walking away. Then she tells him the gestures don't make her comfortable, but he ingores this. Proving these gestures aren't about her but about "him". He also was fine with Hank Hippopopalous being the Bill Cosby of Hollywoo and guilt triped Diane into "not" fighting for his victims because he was afraid it would hurt his show that didn't even last long. So PB cares more about his Image then abuse in Hollywoo. In someways Bojack is a more respectable character because he's at least selfaware of his problems and wants to do better. Bojack also grows as a character and makes the effort to change. PB still feels like the same character he started off as by the shows end. After years of dealing with this kind of behavior the frustration is going to build up in someone. Which leads to the most infuriating thing about the nice guy of all. When you finally snap with him people who don't understand all this get angery with "you" for getting angery with the Nice Guy.

i dated someone like mr peanutbutter for two years, i can understand how diane feels. it's a tricky situation when they just want to give you the whole world, but you can't accept it because maybe you don't feel worthy, maybe you don't feel like you can ever give them the same back. it's exhausting sometimes, as much as i love these two together overall. i can just picture myself in this exact situation with the same emotions as diane and i feel for her

Olivia Dalley It's not that, it's because the library was Diane's fantasy world of escapism that she wanted to remain purely fantasy but PB ruined it for her by making it "real" as a grand gesture to her without even consulting her, and Diane has said to Mr. Peanutbutter in the past that she doesn't like it when he makes these grand gestures to try hard to please her, yet he continues to do so anyway without listening, and she also had to deal with being trapped underground in the same house as PB's exes (thanks to PB's decision to frack under their house) and their trip to Hawaii afterward which was mostly spent by herself in the motel room while PB hung out with the other hotel guests, and even though Diane is always hesitant to voice her true feelings so PB doesn't know exactly how she feels, it shows how Mr. Peanutbutter always thinks of his himself and his own ambitions and fails to take other people's feelings into consideration, and I think the library thing was just merely the straw that broke the camel's back and she couldn't hold in her frustration any longer because she was tired of pretending she was in a happy relationship when in reality they are fundamentally incompatible

oh yeah, I'm completely aware of the situation of this scene, and again god damn it's incredibly relatable into my own life. but I truly feel like some of the reason that Diane gets upset with all of these huge gestures of love is because of her depression and childhood. maybe I'm just trying to find extra comfort in an animated show, I have no idea lmao. PB is extremely self-centred but it does come from a good place in his heart at the end of the day, while Diane always seems to struggle with these overbearing love; possibly because she's never felt it before

I know it's tacky to do this to fictional characters but this scene really makes me wonder. Does Diane have some kind of disorder? Look at it, she hate's grand gestures, she doesn't like surprises, she doesn't like parties, she finds it hard to express the same affection given to her, she doesn't open up until it's too late, she's very fixed in her ways and she _does not want a relationship like this._ It seems clear to me at this point. Bojack is the only one seemingly willing to listen to her woes and that's why she seems much calmer and less uptight around him (in later seasons that is) but she is so strained around Mr. PB. Don't get me wrong, I love Mr. PB but looking at these comments, I don't think Diane's POV is being fully understood. I guess I feel this way because I feel I have a lot in common with Diane and, to be honest I would feel the same way if my husband did not listen to me and kept making the same mistakes.

Grand gestures really pressures you to think of "paying them back" for everything they did so the grander the gesture, the more you think have to do to show how much you thank them for it. And that is where the overwhelming part comes in. Her dislike for surprises is harder to decipher, so I'll try not to get into it. As for parties, it may stem from her unhappy childhood, both in her home and at school. Parties usually involve social interaction and for someone who hasn't had a good experience with other people, it can be hard to enjoy in one. It IS hard to express the same affection given to someone. Say what if you're with a pretty stoic person who has difficulty in expressing their feelings while you're the emotional one in comparison? There's gonna be some issues there. Some don't like to be TOO emotional because it could be a sign of weakness, or losing face (and something about cultural differences but that's a different story). And it's not easy to change habits like that. I sympathize with Diane because nobody gets to see it in her own POV and I have had similar feelings before. It's much easier for everyone (everyone but me) to root for the optimist who is nice to everyone, IGNORING the fact that Mr. Peanutbutter is not as happy and functional as everyone thinks.
@RumbleDelta
@RumbleDelta 7 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean, as much as I like Mr Peanutbutter, it is clear he has his own abandonment issues. He does not want to lose Diane and clearly loves her but they can't see eye to eye. Diane wants to be out there, independent and changing the world where Mr. Peanutbutter just wants her home to be his wife, both are understandable and relate-able wishes. I wouldnt say that everybody but you roots for the optimist because despite his good heart, I do side with Diane more often than not. I have personally felt the same way as Diane before so maybe I'm just biased. Her line "Why can't I be happy, am I busted?!" hit too close to home for me.
@resurrectthenight

Appart from the fact that Diane is a clear introvert, there's this thing called dysthymia, that is a mild chronic depression disorder and the simptomes kinda apply to Diane's behavior, since she cant seem to be happy about herself or her relationship, but I'm no expert on the subject . As for PB, we dont have much background on his life but remember "Nothing bad ever happens in the labrador peninsula". I dont really think he has abandonment issues but instead its because of his dog personality, needy and actively loving.

I am exactly like Diane except for not as depressive. I know exactly what she means. I'm very utilitarian and I want to leave my impact in the world instead of enjoying its luxuries. I want someone to grow with me, to value what I do and what I say, and not merely someone to provide for me or impress me, or try to win my favor. When I experience a grand gesture It's embarrassing. I value the simple things and honestly the same type of things that Diane does. Diane was attracted to Mr peanut butter because she thought his optimism would save her from the dark side of herself, and to an extent that worked, what she didn't foresee is that he wouldn't listen to her, doing the one thing that makes her feel especially insignificant and unloved. She values her mind, and her voice and it's been a struggle to assert herself in a world that underestimates her. I guarantee you by the way they portray Diane it's obvious that she will find contentment because she's so real and so dedicated and ultimately always gets back up, but she has a serious struggle to go through as she lived a childhood of trauma and insignificance.

He butchered the idea but this was one scene where I actually felt pretty bad for Mr. PB. Generally, he's terrible at listening but in previous episodes he had tried to include Diane in the reconstruction of his house and she was not really involved and just deferred to whatever he wanted. This was his hail Mary attempt to bring her in to the process and of course he did it wrong but you can't blame the effort as he had to be aware that his marriage was slipping away yet again.

The problem is that Diane and Mr. Peanut Butter do not have the ability to be able to tell each other how they really feel. They communicate on different levels but cannot be able to communicate with each other. They avoid. Diane could not lean on Mr. Peanut butter when she went across the world and realized she could not do it. Mr. Peanut butter did not tell Diane he was actually bothered by the abortion. He said he wanted to keep it but then said nothing else and like every other situation where things get rough he deflects. He does not confront problems out of fear. Fear makes him do grand gestures and deflect. Rather then confront the issue with two failed marriages and tells Diane he is scared of another failure, he tries to make these over the top grand gestures to prove he is a good husband cause his first two wives were very shitty to him. So that fear makes him think HE was the problem the whole time rather then confront the fact he had two wives who were horrible to him. His grand gestures make Diane feel invisible cause they come off as very self centered and that makes her feel bad that she cant ' measure up.' She feels put on the spot and feels she cant tell him this cause then she looks like the bad guy when he is trying to do something ' nice.' But that gesture is more for his benefit then hers cause he is scared and his reaction to things is to deflect. So in time Diane probably felt that she could not lean on him cause he will make it about him, cause every time there is a problem he gets freaked out and does over the top things. Which makes Diane frustrated cause she does not feel like she can actually TALK to him. So that is pent up frustration cause she knows that she cant talk to him properly. That is why every time he does something nice she gets frustrated cause she knows that his grand gestures are another example of him deflecting and a reminder that she really cannot talk to him about serious stuff. So she avoids it too with drinking, lying about being in a wore torn country and hiding in bojacks house, drugs, and angry sex. They do love each other but the fact that they cant be each others rocks is what led them to her saying she is ' tired of squinting.' If they were able to actually TALK to each other and Mr. Peanutbutter not doing things that are motivated out of fear then they would have had a pretty good marriage. Cause you can tell they DO love each other.

Ever notice that Diane's story arc is similar to Butterscotch's? Both come from poor households in the Eastern USA. Both dream of changing the world by moving to California and becoming a great writer, and end up struggling with crappy jobs, and not breaking through in their chosen fields. They both get better, but unsatisfying jobs (Butterscotch an office drone, Diane a clickbait writer) through their connections. They alienate the people around them through their uncompromising political views. Both of them end up in shallow marriages (though Mr PB is a lot better than Beatrice). Season 5 will probably see a lot more of Butterscotch's backstory. Did he have any siblings? Did any of his novels sell at all?

I can't help but feel Diane is addicted to miserable. Like when she said "getting married is the happiest day of your life... but what about the day after." She have a lot to be happy about. Now did Mr. PB over did it? Yes he did, but he does it because I think he's scared that if he doesn't do things like that Diane will leave him like his first two wives. She didn't have to over react like that. I wonder though, what if he had a room built in for her (like a man cave) and let her fill it in with things she want.

That's the problem, Diane constantly told him she doesn't like big gestures but Mr PB never listens, is not that Diane is addicted to be miserable, she's annoyed because her husband showed again that she didn't listen to her and his big gesture is all fake. Just because Mr. PB had good intentions doesn't mean Diane had to be happy about it.

i like how you can pretty much sympathize with both characters here, no one's truly the bad guy in this situation. MPB does all these extravagant things for diane because he's afraid he might lose her (like what happened with his exes). he tries to make her happy, but he likes to think big and do big things, were as diane likes to think simple and do small things. what they really need is to find that middle ground.

I’m not really a Bojack Horseman fan like at all, but something that strikes out at me is how Mr. Peanuttbutter literally had faces drawn on the furniture and it wasn’t even good furniture just showing how he probably expected to her have fun with whatever he could provide like a little kid having fun with a second-hand toy or used playhouse when that’s just it, she’s not kid. She’s an adult. An adult who moved on with her life. So there’d just be no point in trying to indulge in that fantasy in anymore.

From the very first episode I always thought they were so incompatible and couldn’t believe that actually got married. I mean they’re nothing alike in any way shape or form Mr. peanut butter is this spontaneous happy go lucky overenthusiastic dog who loves making a big spectacle out of things and Diane is very low key and chill who doesn’t always wanna be in the spotlight and would rather have a romantic gesture be something small yet meaningful. I remember in the episode where Bojack had sabotaged Todd’s rock opera Diane had said to Wayne “mr peanut butter is nice to me” I remembered thinking is that the ONLY reason you’re with him???. I mean, of course it’s important to be with someone that’s good to you, but that shouldn’t be the only reason why you’re with them, there should be some things like common interests or similar personality traits that makes you simpatico with your partner, them being a nice person isn’t enough to be in a relationship especially a marriage. I mean he’s done these great big grand romantic gestures for her especially when he proposed but this finally reached the breaking point for her because she’s told him over and over again she doesn’t want a big show of a gesture he’s all into, and yet he continues to do them as if he had no clue she wasn’t into them proving he never really listens to her and her needs. It is a sad moment for her to acknowledge out loud that no matter how hard she’s tries to continue “squinting” and how much she loves and cares for him they’re never gonna be able to get past the problems they continue to have time after time and therefore their marriage will never work. But in the grand scheme of things their divorce was definitely what was best for both of them cuz they’re jus not right for each other. I’m glad they both ended up with happy ending separately and had the chance to express to each other that despite everything they’re grateful for the time they had together.

Are people really so dense that they can't see Diane's point of view? Mr. Peanutbutter is legit acting controlling and manipulating. Rather than allowing Diane to piece together a library (if she ever wanted to), he went ahead and did it for her (and shoddily too), and then tried to present it as a reason to keep her with him. Peanutbutter is really messed-up: selfish, self-absorbed, lacking any sense of self-awareness. Diane honestly made the right decision, but it baffles me that people can just dismiss her and call her a "bitch". It might not have been an abusive relationship between them, but it was certainly an incompatible one that was highly toxic at times.
