The role of Annie Hall was made for her.
@skurlandaficionado3 жыл бұрын
@@boblinden4488 Technically, the role was written for her; Woody Allen based the character on the Keaton he knew during their off-screen relationship in the early 70’s, and many of her own mannerisms and offbeat personality were added into the role by Allen.

This is an absolute gem. Their light-hearted banter and small talk was a fabulous way to end the day. Johnny was truly the GOAT of late night tv. A really special time in America. She's so absolutely ditzy...but yet so enchanting. I always find it amazing when somebody that gets so easily unraveled, can manage to get it together and become so successful. I wrote the above portion before I listened to her sing. And I have to be honest, very often a lot of people in the comment section will think somebody sings good because they themselves can't sing...so anybody that can carry part of a tune will sound good to them. So I didn't expect to hear a voice like I heard out of Diane Keaton. Her voice and her song was absolutely brilliant and beautiful. I never knew. ❤️

In this interview she's exactly like the character she played in Annie Hall. Woody Allen just saw the way she is and just put it in the film. There are lots of questions if the film "Annie Hall" was actually an autobiography on the actual situation between Woody Allen and Diane Keaton. At point 16:53 to 16:56, she gives a nod. The nod is directed at people in the audience who are giving her encouragement and says, "Thanks a lot."

I have always loved this extraordinary actress & admired her work! She is amazing both as an actress & in her personal life! What an amazing woman she is & all I can think of to describe her is a phrase I remember my mother & Nana using, which is this: “DIANE KEATON IS TRULY A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE!” She has never needed a man to give her self worth but forged her way in the world. She adopted two children in between her successful career, doing a fantastic job as a mother, raising two happy, well adjusted children that were not spoiled by their mom’s fame. Diane has done an amazing job at everything she has done in life, as an actress, mother & woman! She is truly amazing!

Diane is an artist, through and through. Delightfully insecure (often) in real life, total performer on stage or film. She's also an amazing photographer and has written two excellent non-fiction books. She was in the original Broadway cast of HAIR in 1968; I used to wonder how she got that gig, since that show is virtually "sung through," as they say. Well, after this performance, I know--even though I heard her sing extremely well in Annie Hall. I find her utterly charming and fascinating. :)

I was visiting with someone that worked behind the scenes when they filmed the Godfather. He said Diane was silly and seemed out to lunch. He thought, there is a solemn scene coming up and there is no way this dingbat will be able to pull this off. Well, Diane was still acting silly until they said "action." She then fell right into the serious role and was terrific. He went on to say, I could hardly believe her talent, she was terrific. He became a super fan, just like the rest of us,,,,lol.

Johnny could have played up the dizziness Diane was displaying for laughs from the audience but instead he was kind, gentle and encouraging to the young performer. Had this been an older Letterman hosting, he would have been all over every ditzy response, embarrassing her relentlessly just to get laughs - e.g. Paris Hilton. Johnny held back a lot here realizing being cruel to your guests just to get laughs wasn't in line with his ethical code nor a good long-term business practice.

Holy smokes, that's the best I've ever heard her sing, that's a really intense performance, oh my god. Keep a hanky nearby, people. And if you need something to make you appreciate how great of an acting job she did in The Godfather or Reds, or make you appreciate how spot on "Annie Hall" is, look no further than this interview. Wow. Annie Hall on steroids! God bless Johnny Carson for calming her nerves! She's nervous, but I wonder if she's also a little stoned! This is December 1972, after all! The new Hollywood in old Hollywood territory! Carson is magnificent on this, he is working his ass off, and gets little to work with. Ed, too! He springs in to action right away, like a nurse, the perfect wingman. Even the producers seem to be the ones laughing heartily, I don't think that's the audience! I'm thinking about Coppola saying he cast her because of her "kooky energy". I completely see why now. That part could have been completely forgettable. Instead, she's as much a part of The Godfather as the cannolis on the car seat! You couldn't lose Keaton any more than you could lose that horse's head! Just another example of brilliant casting matched by an excellent performance. That last scene of the first movie is incredible, I just happened to see it this morning, just that scene, and was realizing how fantastic she was in that scene. No wonder why the movie literally ends on an image of her. Thanks for posting this!!! I wonder how long it took before they had her back! My guess is.....never! (Although now I'm thinking....wasn't she on The Tonight Show later in '73 to promote "Sleeper"? I probably am wrong about that. (All those Woody Allen movies, she's is frickin' outstanding. I don' t know how anybody is going to be able to evaluate the work of Diane Keaton (or Mia Farrow) without watching those movies. I know I'm not giving 'em up! Sorry!

@@TTM9691 yeah, there might be a couple of dogs in the later years, but you're right about his best years! Plus Scoop and Maria Christina Barcelona and some others. Woody Allen is THE genius film maker, practically the only one who covers the inner life, and relationships in an almost Dostoyevskian manner, no matter what else he's accused of being in his private life. And even there, he never lived with Mia Farrow, and he never adopted Farrow's daughter Soon Yi, so it seems he never took on the role of father to begin with. Farrow adopted her, not him. And then she grew up. So I'm not sure what really happened there. Anyway, Woody and Soon Yi are still together.
