Jerry was always shy and self conscious about his voice and didn't want to sing but Layne kept encouraging him to sing. Luckily for us fans he was able to get Jerry to sing. Their harmonies were amazing.

Jerry wasn’t shy. My bff was a singer in a band that Jerry absolutely loved, Sweet Savage. He always knew he had the talent. He was just never sure what way to go. Metal, glam (how they started), then came beautiful grunge.

@@nancymjohnson it's amazing how a narrative like that take on life. Jerry was in Chorus in HS n as u states clearly knew he could sing. All he said, was why would I sing when we have "him, that guy". Layne was a master at dissonant harmonies n their voices blended so well. Sadly Jerry sang more on the tripod album because Layne wasn't well. Great story about sweet savage, must be some awesome stories.

Layne was as authentic as they come. You could hear the pain in his voice. His addiction that he would eventually succumb to was ever present. This entire performance is a masters class in music. Layne died the same day as Kurt Cobain several years later. It was a true loss to music and humanity. The song "Frogs" is my favorite track from this session. It really showcases their talents in a very unique way *Fun fact* The bassist who had "Friends don't let friends get haircuts" was aimed at the guys from Metallica who were in the audience that night. They had cut their long hair prior to the recording of their album entitled Load

AiC is one of my all-time favorite bands, so I encourage everyone to listen to them. Not sure I'd have recommended this one as an introduction, but it's a fine song. They were unique amongst the "grunge" era bands in that they utilized multiple singers frequently as more than background vocals. This is a deep, darkly beautiful hole to explore.
@chrisd7047
@chrisd7047 8 ай бұрын
There were actually 2 members of the band who died from drugs: Staley, and original bassist Mike Starr, who was not the bassist in this video (this was Mike Inez). Starr was actually the last person to see Staley alive, and the guilt he felt at that likely contributed to his own death. Layne's body was found about 2 weeks later in his apartment, decomposed to the point where he needed to be identified by dental records. The coroner estimated that the 6'1" Staley only weighed 90lbs (40kg) at the time of his death. The video you watched, from the MTV Unplugged series, was the first time they'd performed in 2.5 years, and Layne was not well. To answer your question, a lot of art comes from pain; the happy and well-adjusted have little to get off their chests. This is especially true of musicians, poets, and comedians.

For the concert, the bassist wrote on his bass FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS GET FRIENDS HAIRCUTS in response to Metallica getting their hair cut short and making the Black album which a lot of people saw as the band "selling out" The members of Metallic were at the Unplugged concert and got a kick out of it.

Every time I see AIC, it is bittersweet. Their music is so wonderful, and moody, and the essence of 90s rock. Then I remember I was at Layne Staley's last on-stage performance at KC's Kemper Arena on July 3, 1996. they opened for KISS. you knew it was gonna be one of those unforgettable nights when Jerry Cantrell comes on stage and yells "hey, f***ers!" into the mic. Layne, like many others, left us too soon. I'm grateful that the music of AIC is alive and being spread through your channel. the entire KC concert video is on KZfaq. July 3, 1996. grainy AF, copied from a camcorder, and absolutely amazing. also... "Rooster" and "Grind" , two of their most popular songs, are fun listens. The story behind "Rooster" is wonderful.

For more of this unplugged set check out Nutshell. For a video of Layne Staley(Singer) in his prime/healthy check out Love Hate Love(live at the Moore), this unplugged performance is great but Layne was deep in his drug addiction at this point & not in great health. This was 1 of his last performances before he became a recluse & just did drugs & played video games for the last 6 years of his life. Layne became such a recluse it took 2 weeks before they found his body after he OD'd. Just a sad story. AIC started as a Metal band from Seattle but got lumped into the Grunge genre with Nirvana, Pearl Jam & Soundgarden when Grunge blew up. AIC were the heaviest band of the 4 with deep & dark lyrics. Jerry Cantrell is the other singer/Guitarist in this video & he's the main songwriter of the band, he's wrote 50% of the lyrics & 97% of the music. Thankfully he's still alive & still making music along with the Drummer Sean & Mike the Bassist(all in this video) with a AIC without Layne.

Alice In Chains was one of the most influential rock bands in the 90's grunge rock era... They had the heaviness of early Black Sabbath, the vocal harmonies of The Beatles, and the surreal imagery of Pink Floyd... Formed in Seattle in the 80's, Alice In Chains were initially glam-looking... but they ditched that image for a casual look in 1990 when they released their debut album 'Facelift'... The original band was: Layne Staley (lead vocals), Jerry Cantrell (guitar and lead vocals), Sean Kinney (drums) and Mike Starr (bass) The band also branched out from the heavy rock w/ an acoustic EP 'Sap' in 1991... and another semi-acosutic EP 'Jar of Flies' in 1994. 'Down in a hole' came from their 1992 (2nd) album 'Dirt'... Jerry Cantrell wrote the song about struggling (his emotions and addictions) - he was still in love w/ a woman whom he couldn't be with (Cantrell wrote most of Alice In Chains' songs)... But most of the songs on 'Dirt' were about the reality of he+++n addiction that Layne and Mike Starr were struggling with ('Sickman' ... 'Junkhead' ... 'God smack' ... 'Dirt' ... 'Would?')... Sadly, Mike Starr was fired in early 1993 because he was messed up on junk and couldn't perform live anymore... He was replaced by Mike Inez (bass) who did this 1996 'MTV Unplugged' show... Mike Starr passed away in 2011 from a prescription OD. Alice In Chains dominated the early 90's alongside Nirvana and Pearl Jam (who were also from Seattle) and the band initially toured w/ anyone willing to take them on tour... Ozzy Osbourne, Poison, Megadeth, Slayer... Alice In Chains opened for them in the 90's. After their 1993 tour, Mike Inez (bass) had joined but vocalist Layne Staley was in bad shape from he+++n abuse and despite their EP 'Jar of flies' charting at #1 in the USA in 1994, Alice In Chains dropped off a tour opening for Metallica in '94. Layne Staley recorded and released a project Mad Season, their only album 'Above' released in 1995... Alice In Chains released their self-titled album in '95 soon after (Often called 'Tripod' for the 3-legged dog on the album cover) and did the 1996 'MTV Unplugged' session... However, Layne was not in good shape and clearly on something before he performed that night. Alice In Chains opened 4 shows for Kiss in the summer of '96... Layne survived an OD after the last show, but never performed w/ Alice in Chains in concert again... After Layne's longtime GF Demri died in 1996 from her own addiction complications, Layne disappeared from sight. Jerry Cantrell released his solo album 'Boggy Depot' in 1998, which was a lighter rock album... Still, he was able to get Layne and the rest of Alice In Chains together in 1998 to record 2 new songs for an upcoming Alice In Chains boxed set... Layne Staley was deteriorating & he wrote an recorded 2 truly dark songs as his final work - 'Get born again' and 'Died'... which were released in 1999 on the 'Music Bank' boxed set. In 2002, Layne Staley was found dead in his Seattle apartment from an OD. In 2005, members of Alice In Chains reunited for a benefit concert and vocalist William DuVall, who was performing in Jerry Cantrell's solo band, was eventually tapped to sing Layne Staley vocals in concert... Alice In Chains announced a reunion tour in 2006 w/ William DuVall joining Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Mike Inez... A new album 'Black gives way to blue' was finally released in 2009 which was dedicated to Layne Staley. Since then, Alice In Chains has released more new albums - 'The devil put dinosaurs here' (2013) and 'Rainier fog' (2018)

You just brought back the memory of my little brother after his first heart attack. I go to visit him and I walk in to find him and his wife eating pork fried rice! The look on my face must have said it all, because he immediately said "The doctor said it was Ok"...

After this concert in 1996, Alice in Chains went into hiatus. Jerry Cantrell did a couple of solo albums in the late 1990s. They re-formed with a new singer, William DuVall around 2006 and have put out 3 more albums since and toured recently. Crazy to say that DuVall has been with Alice in Chains actively for longer than Layne Staley was. They're a little different now, but since DuVall is an accomplished guitarist and singer in his own right, the singing duties are divided more evenly now between Jerry and William. Jerry sings most of the lead vocals on the newer material, while DuVall handles (quite well) the songs that were written for Staley vocals If you want a good example of their stuff from their current lineup, I'd suggest "Your Decision" from 2009. Or "Voices" from 2013. They're still heavy, grungy, melodic and have great harmonies.

Creative types often suffer from insecurities ,low self esteem, lack of social skills etc, and when they achieve fame and success, they can't deal with it so end up using drugs and or becoming suicidal. Yeah I know, we all heard this a million times, but it never gets any easier losing one of our precious favorite musicians. All the best in the New Year Diane.

Chris Cornell who has also unfortunately passed has said he regretted not reaching out to Layne when they were at a mutual friends funeral. Also Metallica who were good friends of the band were in audience of this MTV Unplugged.

Absolutely you should! I know you have reacted to Nirvana but I think you would be surprised to see their unplugged. It originally was only acoustic but I think as it got popular they branched out but Nirvana acoustic is really different and special@@DianeJennings
