Fun fact but not so fun fact: In the times of the big depression when people didnt find any resource of food and even if it were they cant buy it people used to boil shoes in water because in that time almost every shoe was made of Leather so it was eatable

if you're asking about why he's homeless instead of running the casino: headwriter of the show, DD, has said on twitter that they (the writers), quote, "considered giving him a job as a used car salesman, but just couldn't justify him being anything other than debilitatingly depressed/broken after losing his show and disappointing the devil"
